“family oriented resort.... baby friendly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2006

My husband and my 20 month old son stayed at the Montreal Inn for 4 nights in the Millenium Suite. Initially, when we arrived we were a bit disappointed because the room was more like a howard johnson's than a "resort" room. We decided to make the best of it and have a good time.

The place really grew on us.

The convenience of the beach being right across the road was huge. Cape May has a "boardwalk" that is basically a paved pedestrian road that runs down the beach. Pushing a stroller from the motel to the beach was no problem at all. There is a handicap access ramp too, so there was no need to carry the stroller.
There are restaurants all along the boardwalk, which was also quite handy pushing the stroller. The first night we ate at the hotel restaurant, and the food was awful. We ordered salads and a seafood dish for 2, that did not taste too fresh. We ate breakfast at the restaurant 3 times, and each one was delicious.
The service was also quite good.
We stayed in the Millenium suite and had no problem with the fact we had a baby. (I thought I saw a reveiw that said toddlers are not allowed there.)
The hotel also has an elevator which is quite convenient with a stroller. For older children, there are ping pong tables and shuffleboard. We did not use the pool.
For adults, there is a liquor store attached to the motel. If you like to drink, you may enjoy this amenity.
The entire time we stayed there, there was a heat wave with temperatures about 100 degrees everyday. The air conditioner worked flawlessly and was a blessing.
All in all the trip was great. The room is not a Hilton, but it was extremely comfortable with all the comforts of home (coffee maker, television, bathtub, phone, balcony, 2 burner stove).
I would recommend this place to families or to people who like to be out and about for sometime during the day. (I don't know if it would be the place to spend a romantic honeymoon.)
If you would like a great meal, we also enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Grand Hotel.

We have stayed at this hotel for many many years and find it better each time. The location on the beach is superb, the accommodations are average, and the service is excellent and friendly. The owners have made many improvements both on the exterior as well as in the rooms. It is not a "luxury" hotel but certainly can meet the needs of most. You won't be disappointed.

While we were not expecting luxury for the amount we paid, we were expecting more than what we found at the Montreal Inn. We booked our room via the internet and specifically asked for an Ocean View. When we got there, what we were given was a view of the pool. We were given a first floor room wih no view of the ocean anywhere in sight. I'm not sure how they can get away with advertising rooms with an ocean view when clearly the first and possibly second floors of their hotel cannot view the ocean at all. To their credit, I asked if we could be moved and a day later they said they would have another room available so only half of our stay was in view of the pool - they moved our luggage for us which was also a nice gesture. (We hated this room not only because of the view but also because of the lack of privacy and the noise outside of the bedroom every night.)

The original room was dark and dingy, the floor in front of the kitchenette area was so filthy, it was brown instead of white. Our sons feet were dirty within a short time of him walking around inside the room and we're not sure whether this was from the dirty floor or dirty carpeting.

The ocean view room were were given on day 3 had a wonderful view of the sea and we were very pleased to be able to leave the curtains and sliding door open while still having some privacy. Unfortunately this room had it's own problems - the first night the toilet clogged up. My husband went down to the front desk to get a plunger and asked if he should leave it for the maid to retrieve the next day. He was told he should bring it back because "someone else's toilet on our floor might clog and they will need it". We can only assume that the Montreal Inn's toilets must clog up a lot.

Although we had a non-smoking room, something about the ventilation system was such that with our a/c on, it smelled like smoke was being blown directly into our room. Another interesting feature was that we must've also been connected to another rooms bathroom vent because we had the displeasure of smelling many awful odors during the 2 evenings we watched TV in the livingroom. Again, our sons bare feet, as well as mine and my husbands, were black from walking barefoot on the floor in this room.

Finally, our own bathroom smelled like a gas station bathroom - one that had not been cleaned in months and reaked of urine. My husband said it smelled like a urinal. It was revolting.

We had high hopes for this hotel but after visiting it in person, we will not return again and wish we had not wasted $450+ on such extremely sub-par accomodations.

We stayed here prefiously without a problem, but this time after booking on the internet, we got the breezeway room and were not aware of this. There was no balcony, chairs, nor ocean view. We had a dark view of the cement steps which my daughter had to sit on to read her book, as the room was dark and gloomy with no sun coming in. When we complained, they said there was nothing they could do. But a day later we realized we could go upstairs to sit on the sun deck- it would've been nice if the staff suggested this. But that is not what we bargained for on our vacation when we just wanted to step outside in our robes in the morning and sit on our private balcony. We also had everyone walking by our room to use the stairs so there was no privacy.
The bathroom was tiny with cement walls- it felt like we were in a basement. The sink had no vanity and the toilet did not flush properly. The room smelt heavily like smoke, the coffee filter with old grinds was left in the coffee maker and the refrigerator had a container of someone's old fruit left inside. The headboard fell off the bed and the staff was impersonal and unhelpful when asked various questions.
All -in-all I won't be going back there on our next visit to Cape May, but maybe down the line we'll give them another chance.

No “News” is ‘Bad News’ at the Montreal Inn

In response to the “Bad News” review posted on your site on Sept. 22, 2006, we would like to assure your readers that the family and staff of the Montreal Inn carefully consider all constructive comments about our hotel, and turn them into “good news” for future and returning guests.
We investigate thoroughly any negative feedback and make immediate corrections if a problem is found. We are sorry that the guests who wrote that Sept. 22 review felt their experience, this time, at our hotel was not up to the standards they had come to expect from previous stays.
When a guest makes a reservation from an online travel site, they are sent a confirmation indicating that their deposit has been accepted. The confirmation indicates the type of accommodation, room description, ocean view/non ocean view, smoking or
nonsmoking, along with deposit and final payment instructions. The reviewer might have chosen that room type because there was nothing else available at the time or because the rate was acceptable.
In regard to the comments on the bathroom, we respectfully submit that our entire building is made of concrete, and all of the bathrooms are basically the same, tastefully detailed with ceramic tile and modern fixtures.
Our front desk staff asks every guest at check in to let us know if there is anything we can do for them to make their stay more comfortable. If the guest had reported to the front desk that the coffeemaker was not cleaned properly or the refrigerator was not emptied correctly, we would have taken immediate action to correct the situation. If we are not advised by the guest while they are with us that they are experiencing a problem, we cannot take any steps to make their stay more comfortable.
We are sorry that the reviewer felt their stay this time was unacceptable, and hope that their experience will not keep them from returning to our hotel again in the future. We would like the opportunity to demonstrate to them, once again, that the Montreal Inn is Cape May’s Most Accommodating Inn.

We have returned home from a short but nice stay at the Montréal Inn, Cape May, NJ. Unfortunately, our son took ill and we were required to cut our trip short and leave several days early. I was surprised when I received a letter from the management expressing regret that we had to leave early. Additionally, I was impressed that the Montreal Inn provided a full credit or reimbursement for the time we missed, without any obligation to do so. I hope they were able to rent the rooms in our absence, in any event, this is the type of establishment I like to do business with and I look forward to my next stay. While we were there, the Hotel was everything that we expected it to be from the reviews we read on this web site. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. The staff was courteous and helpful. The pool was accessible and the beach a short walk across the street. In short, everything you would want in a beach front hotel.

We just returned from our stay (Aug '06). We were disappointed with this hotel because of the reviews read on this site. It's as if they are talking about a different place. It is not horrible, don't get me wrong. However, it is a glorified motel that boasts it is a "resort". This is simply not true.

They went as far as finishing the railings in the front of the hotel, but the ones on the back, where you are forced to walk to get anywhere are 2 feet tall and seemed to not be spaced to regulation. My husband was concerned that our 2 yr old could slip through. And, while we were there a cooler was accidently dropped over this railing onto the hood of a car.

The lounge chairs, at the pool, line one side only and touch eachother due to the lack of space. It was so crowded and so uninviting due to the awkward positioning of the chairs.

My mother in-law and husb stayed in the millenium suite and we stayed in the adjacent room connecting by the balacony. Where do I begin: our room was equivilant to a broom closet. It had a queen bed with hardly any place to walk. My husband slept on a cot next to the bathroom in at 3'x5' hallway next to the bathroom.
My 2 year old son slept with me in the queen bed, since he would have rolled off the cot.

Our plan was to let him sleep on the sofa bed in the Millenium suite. We were told in advanced no children were to be booked in that suite. We figured it would be harmless for a 2 yr old to sleep in a sofa bed while we played board games in the evening.
HOWEVER, at check-in my mother in-law was told that her grandson could NEVER step foot in her room. He was banned from the suite! Basically, he was her whole reason for the trip, since she lives in a different state. So, we did brake the rule a bit.
She was crushed right from the start. It was heartless the way she was told. It was also a blow to pull up to a glorified motel that cost her $2000 for the trip. She came to the car after checking in and her smile was gone! Oh, an the millenium suite, OK, but very small as well.

Not very much interaction with the staff. I did use the business center where the printer was out of ink and was told it would be replaced in 2 days. Not helpful when I needed to print directions and a map that day.

The back side of the hotel needs a dumpster. You need to walk to your car there everyday. In doing so, you see (&smell) overflowing garbage cans with food and beer bottles etc from thier restaurant. Needless to say we never ate there.

Basically, it said alot to me that the the front of the building was spruced with new railings and shiny red roof etc and the back was not touched since the 50's maybe. The back tells the tale of
this place! Keep looking there were some really nice looking places there-this is far from the best and NOT near shops and restaurants like people have said.

This hotel/motel is in the perfect spot, close to shops, promenade, beach, etc... When making reservations the staff was friendly and answered questions, however after the deposit was received that was it. I called with a question and was given a very short answer. I am not a complainer and consider myself to be laid back, but let me say that I was not all happy walking on the first floor. People's beach towels all over, beach chairs, sand toys, ashtrays, clothes, laying all over the place. The room itself was clean, although there were some rust stains in the bathroom, there was a spot on the bedspread as well as the drapes. Plenty of towels were left daily and the housekeeping staff was very friendly and attentive. Interesting that when checking out the front desk staff never asked how our stay was. I found that to be odd considering this is a small place, not a large corporation. I would consider staying here again, but would probably rather try something else.
