“Pleasantly Surprised”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2008

I needed to be in the Clifton area to attend a family wedding in a nearby town. There aren't many choices and I selected La Quinta with misgivings because, quite frankly, I don't have a good image of the La Quinta brand. I was pleasantly surprised for the following reasons:

The hotel seems to have been newly renovated and my room was relatively large, new and amply furnished, refrigerator, in-room safe, adequate lighting for reading, an easy chair with a standing lamp next to it for reading, good desk for my laptop and other things, microwave, and very comfortable. Immaculate bathroom with adequate amenities.

Free Internet access in the room.

Surprisingly varied breakfast, much more than just coffee and toast.

Friendly and helpful staff. A morning check-in request was immediately honored, as was a late check-out request. Several inquiries at the desk were competently handled with smiles.

Yes, as several reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is not easy to find and I had difficulty in getting my GPS to recognize the address, but I did get there using Mapquest and telephone instructions from the front desk.

Two negatives, but not biggies: (1) the breakfast room itself (as opposed to the very good breakfast food) is like a school cafeteria and has two TVs going full-time. I like to read the newspaper during breakfast, but couldn't because of the noise, so I put on my noise suppressing earphones and listened to my iPod instead; and (2) during my six-day visit, La Quinta played host to numerous bus tours, including several groups of high school students. Although I have no complaints about their behavior, their presence did lead to a very crowded breakfast room, for which the staff was inadequate to keep the tables clean, and more noise in the halls than I would have liked.

Yes, I would stay there again.

The rooms? Beautiful. Pretty Spacious for a hotel room. I have stayed at nicer hotels, but had tinier rooms, so it was a nice treat.

Service was awful. I had directions to get there, but for some reason couldnt find the place! The road signs were very misleading. I called once to try to get help, and got put on hold for 15 minutes! So I called back and the guy said "Oh sorry. Can you hold?" for another 10 minutes. After waiting nearly half an hour to get directions, I asked the guy if early check in was available. He said yes, and proceeded to give me WRONG directions. It wasnt until a gas station attendant saved us that we were finally on track.

When we got there, it was about 2pm. Check in was 3pm. He told us to wait ensuring us our room was almost ready. We waited until 3pm, and finally I said, well NOW it is the check in time can we get our room yet? And MAGICALLY there were rooms. Thanks for lying to us! Early check in is NOT available even if they tell you it is. They will just make you sit and wait until check in time. Just tell me it isnt available, and that would have been fine!

The front desk overall seemed not friendly, and were not helpful. They all looked miserable! Every person looks at the guests like they are a burden.

Other than that, once getting in the room, the stay was great. The housekeeping team does and FABULOUS job making the rooms spotless and seamless.

This is nick picking, but I thought the lobby could have used some music. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop!

Its also nice they have a Red Robin attached to them.

Stay here for the rate and the rooms, but expect terrible service.

The best thing about the hotel is the staff. Very friendly and eager to please. The shuttle driver was wonderful!

Booked a King Suite, roomy and clean though basic-$139.00 per night with mini-fridge and microwave. Breakfast buffet was okay, not hearty fare but decent. Comfy bed, clean sheets, plenty of pillows.

Three issues: The TERRIBLE smell in the halls (first floor), smelled like pet urine. Shower could not be regulated went from hot to cold by itself. No lock on first floor window-maintenence responded quickly but solution was to put a steel bar in the window (though perm repair was made next day).

Not a bad stay, basic, no frills. May stay there again if rate was right.

The hotel staff is indeed very helpful and nice. The breakfast is good. The surronding areas have alot of stores... Target, Sports Authority, Staples, and a large supermarket. The hotel has gone through renovation. It looks OK now, I can't imagine how it looked before. The highest point of the stay was the staff, the breakfast, and the free wifi. The location... well, so so. It is a good 20 minute ride to NYC, with no traffic. If there is lots of traffic, well... make it 50 minutes. The rate I got at Hotwire was good, but if you spend a bit more you can stay in the Harmon Meadows area... which I think is MUCH BETTER. The truth is that this hotel is a little far away. Once again, loved the breakfast !!

This hotel consists of two (it may be three) buildings. Based on the disparity of reviews here, these buildings must be in different stages of refurbishment. The “back” building we were assigned to was sub-par. The elevators and corridors were old, dark and creepy. The furniture in the room was a mismatched jumble of damaged things. There were two “desks.” One was an old dark thing that looked like it had been attacked with an ax. The other one was some sort of green modular piece that looked like it was from the 70s.
The beds were not new, both phones were filthy, the toilet seat had hair on it, the toilet bowl had a large crack, the sink and tub were very clogged and took forever to drain.
Upon returning to our room one night after being out all day, we found the door to our room was left open a good six inches. Thankfully nothing had been stolen, but the first few minutes of looking in closets, etc. were pretty scary.
The only positives were that the bedding appeared to be clean, there was good water pressure in the shower, and the room was relatively quiet (the hotel seemed to be nearly empty).
As for Hotwire’s 3-star rating, it was interesting to see them refer to it as a 2.5-star in their follow-up survey.
I would not recommend this hotel. Based on this experience I will steer clear of La Quintas. When in the NYC area again, we’ll go back to the Summerfield Suites in Whippany. It is a better value, a far superior hotel and in a much nicer area.

A pleasantly nice stay at the LQ Clifton, NJ. We purchased a room for two nights at the Hotwire rate of $54 a night (it was a 3 star selection) to avoid the pricey Manhattan alternative. Indeed, I was surprised to see a La Quinta at a 3 star rating, as it is usually a solid 2.5 across the chain. However, the hotel was newly renovated with the rooms a nice size, colorful carpets and brand new beds. Plus, a large indoor pool that was pleasant. Of course, throw in a free breakfast, parking, and internet and this was a steal for the price. The neighboring Red Robin restaurant was excellent as well.

If you plan on driving into the city, it's about 15 minutes into Times Square, maybe 20 with traffic. There is also a bus and train that take you into town. However, the location of the hotel is right off the highway and a little dank, so, just drive in instead of a bus, etc.

Overall, a downright cheap (in a good way) alternative to make your base near Manhattan.
