East LA is a Hoboken staple due to its selection of frozen margheritas. The food won't blow you away, but it is VERY good. I've never had something that I didn't like there.

They start you off with unlimited chips and salsa while you browse their extensive menu. Many options for beef, chicken, shrimp, and vegetarian. Very big portions. I always get the fajitas, usually with beef, but they're all delicious. I have had the enchilada and the burrito before and they were both great.

TIP: TUESDAY NIGHTS ARE "BUY ONE ENTREE, GET ONE FREE". Great deal considering you may be spending some money on the Margheritas.

There's a bar in the front of the restaurant, which is convenient if you're waiting for a table.

Things you should know about this place is that it can get very loud from music/loud people. If you're looking for a nice romantic Mexican dinner, you'll like Charrito's (BYOB) in Hoboken better.

But if you're looking to drink margheritas and have more of a Mexican bar/cantina atmosphere, you can't do better than EAST LA.

Really looking forward to Mexican. Ducked into the place during a summer rainstorm. Our waiter (in his 20s) was clueless, but he tag-teamed with the waitress who seemed to have a handle the best she could. He did bring tortilla chips and salsa but the whole table had drinks except those of us that ordered their "everybody raves about them" margaritas. I'm not sure why they are so popular, except maybe because all the extra schnapps numbs peoples' palates so they can't taste the chemicals in the mix. The machine was over-frozen, so we waited.

When our plates came, one taste of the guacamole was met with the tell-tale sizzle on my tongue of spoiled product. It all got sent back. Over 50% of my husband's steak fajita meat was burnt to a crisp and the chicken in my dish was no way near fresh. Didn't bother to eat it.

The waitress removed all charges from our bill, except for the margarita...and by mistake, the original offending guacamole. Oh, the irony.

No wonder the place is so dark. You have to hide the dirt and poor food somehow.

There is always a wait and it is always loud and crowded and I don't know why -- the food is just average - nothing imaginative. The ingredients don't seem particularly fresh and the service isn't particularly great. The whole place feels slightly run down and in need of a good clean. That said, the food is fine for Mexican but there is better elsewhere.

Im from Texas, so it is hard to find any place in NJ that comes close to what I consider excellent Mexican food. East LA is not bad, the nachos were actually really good! The margaritas are strong and everything is well priced. If you in Hoboken and have a Mex craving stop in.
My only suggestion would be if your looking to talk with the person (date) not a good place. People tend to get a little boisterous at the bar and the music is playing. Although, if that is not the case it is a fun place to have drinks and a laugh.
