The Westin Jersey City Newport
Ranked #2 of 14 Hotels in Jersey City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 June 2014

This hotel is located in the newly upmarket section of Jersey City called Newport. On the river's edge, the Westin is a less-than-5-minute walk from the PATH train which can run travelers into New York City in minutes. The staff were pleasant and helpful, offering at one point in my stay to change my room due to noisy neighbors. My Junior Suite was spacious and quiet, with phenomenal views of the river. There was room enough to spread out and work in one area, relax in another, and sleep in yet another. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, as well as a shopping mall, replete with movie theater in case travelers want to catch a film or have teens traveling with them. The waterfront walkways across the street are also perfect for romantic strolls.

Room Tip: Higher floors being better views at this property.

Really nice hotel and the restaurant is very good.
Ask for the view on Manathan in the upper level, it is worth it!
Our room was very nice and luxury. We had a great time at this hotel and will surely go back!

We hosted a corporate meeting at the Westing in May 2014. This meeting was for a major corporation with 100+ attendees. There were problems with the hotel from day 1. They lost some of the printed materials we shipped to the hotel, although properly marked as per the Sales Mgr's instructions. The food was the worst part of the meeting. They served the same reconstituted chicken and fish for each lunch and dinner. They also did not clear dirty dishes and glasses from the breaks. They also were not replenishing food on the buffet for lunches. The worst part was the evening of our keynote speaker - they ran out of food for about 35 people. They had to cook additional food (different food) for the remainer of guests that did not have food. It was terrible and extremely embarassing. Some guests did not have dinner at all that night. The last day of the meeting ended at 1:00 and included a boxed lunch for attendees. The apples in the boxed lunches were disgusting - obviously old fruit. Several guests complained about feeling ill and one attendee, who at the potato salad in the boxed lunch, ended up at the hospital with food poisoning.

To date (one month after our meeting) was are STILL waiting for the final bill.

Something is definitely wrong at this hotel. The prices they are charging for rooms and food for a business function are definitely overpriced for what you get. I will never host a meeting at this property again. I doubt my company will be using them for any more events.

What a disappointment! It was terrible.

I have over the years stayed here countless times. Yes I prefer to stay in Manhattan, but when you need to think about cost, this is an excellent option. Clean, comfortable and half the price than Manhattan hotels and only few min away direct on the PATH train.

The Hotel:
It’s a business hotel, rooms are average biz style, nothing special, but the rooms are super clean and functional and the beds are comfortable. Staff is friendly. It has a pool and some rooms have a nice view of Manhattan skyline.

Location:
Its 4min walk for the PATH station, behind the hotel is a huge shopping center, with lots of shops, cinema, and food court. Next to PATH station is nice restaurant, including my favourite Sushi restaurant in NY (komegashi too)
Its 20min on the PATH train to NY (33rd st) and less if you visit funky places around Christopher St (West Village)
On weekends the PATH is a bit slower and you need to plan 30min for a trip into town (33rd), but it runs 24h a day.

Tips:
They have lots of weekend specials (it’s a biz hotel) and cheap rates if you plan a bit
Get the rooms with the big bathroom, it’s got a huge free standing tub by a window, in a huge bathroom, overlooking Manhattan
(It’s hard to beat laying in that that bath watching the sunrise over NY, especially if there is two of you, and you would be forgiven for staying in NJ and not NY)
Don’t eat in the hotel, its expense and there is tons of options around the hotel.
Walk to Hoboken along the river and go explore the cool shops and streets in Hoboken. (Good night life too)

Yes its not Manhattan, but the price is hard to beat, and actually the area has fun things to do too. Great for visiting NY on a budget and great for biz visit to NY.

Room Tip: Get the rooms with the big bathroom, it’s got a huge free standing tub by a window, in a huge bathro...

We booked this hotel at the last minute. The parial view of the skyline is great! The curtains in our double bed room parted a great partial view of the skyline and the river with ferries, busy traffic, and the light rail which is a popular NJ transit from Jersey city to Hoboken. The hotel is a 3 minute walk to the new Port mall. There is a parking fee of nearly $18 per day at the parking garage.Cannot review about room service as we haven't ordered any breakfast from there. The beds were neat and comfy. The air conditioner in the room was in great working condition and I was freezing in no time. Had a great experience except that it sounded a bit pricey to me.

I attended a wedding in Jersey City on Memorial Day weekend. The bride reserved a block of rooms at the Westin.
We arrived after a long train trip to find our room wouldn't be ready for another half hour. My daughter had a very bad cold and needed to rest, so I asked if anything else was available. The woman helping us said she could offer an upgrade on a higher floor for $20 more a night, and I jumped at the chance.
We checked in to find the standard luxurious Westin room with beautiful beds, stunning bedding and modern furnishings. What we were not prepared for was when we opened the drapes: an absolutely stunning view of Lower Manhattan and the Freedom Tower. It was totally mesmerizing.
The room was luxurious and modern, with large flat screen TV, small refrigerator, and a bath with a rainshower head and lighted makeup mirror. Unfortunately, housekeeping gave us extra bath gel and no shampoo. One phone call and 3 minutes remedied that.
Due to the wedding, this review remains incomplete, because we didn't have a chance to try the pool or the restaurants.
We checked out by the TV. On our way out I caught the eye of someone at the front desk, smiled and said how much we enjoyed our stay. This gentleman, named Patrick, came out from behind the front desk, and escorted us all the way out while asking about our stay.
I worked in Manhattan for 28 years and commuted from the far suburbs for many of them. If I attended a concert on a weeknight I would book a hotel in Manhattan rather than get home at 2am. Trust me, I have paid more at some flea-bag hotels in Manhattan than I paid at the Westin in Jersey City.
The hotel is stunning, and the service we received was top-notch. I highly urge tourists to NYC to stay here. It is a luxury hotel at the price of a moderate Manhattan hotel, and the PATH train ride to NY is shorter than the average Manhattan subway ride.

Room Tip: Pay more for the upper floors

We stayed here with family combining business and work for 8 nights in May 2014.

The service was outstanding. What we liked were the little touches by the staff to make our stay memorable.

For example, one evening when we returned back to our room, we found a hand-written note from our concierge - Ben - welcoming us back delivered along with little pastries and milk cartons (he had seen our two daughters over the last few days and knew that we needed milk.)

Another instance was when the manager walked over and helped send the fax for me.

Also, if you print out something, the staff bring your printouts up to your room ... a huge luxury if you've had a tiring day and still need to get some more work finished.

Their pool (open till midnight and covered) is another delightful highlight since you can take the kids there in the evenings. The gym is small but functional including weight machines and cardio equipment.

Overall, this hotel is an oasis of hospitality and authentic friendliness in a city which is all too transaction-oriented.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which faces New York City ... the views are gorgeous.
