“An economical choice, but not necessarily a good deal.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2006

We recently spent 2 nights here in a studio suite and were definitely NOT impressed. The reason I chose this hotel is because Candlewood Suites offers Priority Club's best reward deal at only 11,000 points per night, so our stay cost only 22,000 points total. But even with that in mind, this place was a disappointment.

To start with, when we checked in our keys didn't work. So I trekked back down to the desk and got new keys. This time the keys worked, but opened our door to a room that was already occupied. So we trekked back down to the desk a 3rd time and got a new room and keys, which finally worked out.

Next we immediately noticed that it was about 90 degrees in the room, even though the AC was running. This turned out to be due to the fact that the AC is smart enough to know when the room is empty and turns itself off. So every time we returned to the room we had to sweat for 10 minutes until the room cooled down again. Now I'm all for saving energy, but this is going too far.

As for the room itself, it had a slight but constant smell of Chinese food. And while it wasn't necessarily dirty or overly worn, it just had a cold dingy feeling to it. The room layout, the colors, the cheap furniture, etc. all reminded me of an old dorm room I had in college that I hated. The bed was terrible. The pillows had hair on them. The carpet was thin and a horrible red color. And I certainly can't forget to mention the absolutely obnoxious AC unit. This thing sounded like a turbo-jet every time it came on, and that was the only setting. There was no low or medium; only off or super-high which honestly necessitated doubling the TV volume when it came on, then turning it back down half way when it went off. This was one of the worst features of the room.

The bathroom was okay, except for the dozen or so foot long hairs that were on the shower curtain and floor. That was really gross. There was also a lack of hot water our last morning. But otherwise the shower was pretty good with nice pressure.

Another odd thing about this place that is certainly a negative is the maid service, or I should say lack of maid service. Apparently the maids only come once a week. The other days you can exchange your dirty towels and sheets at the front desk. Again, this took me back to my dorm days, which is not a way for a hotel to endear itself to me.

There were a few positives, so I'll list them here: The location was decent, just a 10 to 15 minute walk to the PATH. The parking was free and seemed pretty secure. The gym was decent. There was a DVD player in the room and the TV was a good size. That's all I can think of.

So in the end I am rating this place 2 stars instead of one. I do this only because of the location and the possibility of getting a good price. If you can use points for a reward stay, and can deal with sleeping in a dumpy place, then it is an okay deal. But if I were paying cash, I wouldn't pay more than $100 to $125 per night. Any more than that and you could do much better with Priceline.

I have had to stay here for four weeks for work and it is a really awful place. There is no service whatsoever - we had lots of luggage and no one was available to help. The staff hung up on someone trying to contact our room and the rooms have very noisy airconditioning. However convienent the location this is not a place to go to economise - we had a thoroughly unpleasant stay. The nylon sheets and duvet were particularly nasty. I have never been to a hotel before where you have to empty trash and change the towels yourself.
I think people might have over-rated this place because they had a fun trip to the city but as a hotel it is devoid of charm, service and any quality you care to think of.

Candlewood Suites, Jersey City, NJ. Look no further- you found it! We booked a one bedroom suite, which contained one double bed in bedroom and one comfortable pull out couch in living room/kitchen. We knew that the bed would not be a "queen" as advertised on the website. It has been our experience that most extended stay hotels call a double bed a queen. The room was spotless and very inviting. The staff could not have been more helpful and hospitable. Large table, kitchen with microwave and full size refrigerator. Cabinets contained pots, pans, utensils, flatware, plates, bowls, etc. The view from our room was nothing short of spectacular- the Empire State Building and the Hudson River. Two TV sets, and one VCR, and a video library in the lobby.
The hotel is a 10 minute -very safe - walk from the Pavonia/Newport PATH station. You'll pass one or two restaurants, two other hotels, condos and parking lots. If you choose, there is a light rail train that stops opposite the hotel, which can wisk you to the PATH station, as well as other Jersey points in a jiffy. Check out Hoboken for great shopping and night life. The PATH trains run all night, connecting you to six stations in Manhattan. There is a large shopping mall nearby. The parking is free and convenient. The hotel contains a 24 hour comissary, with items sold on the honor system. A large laundry room provides free washers and dryers. The hotel also runs a limited hour and area shuttle a few times a day. If you are arriving from NEWARK Airport, take the shuttle bus to Newark’s Penn Station, and jump on the PATH. You will not go wrong here - the convenience and benefits far outweigh the small inconvenience of walking to the train station.
At night, you can walk a few steps and linger on the walkway overlooking the NYC Skyline on the Hudson River. We often took the PATH to Christopher Street and wandered the West Village. The PATH train also stops at 33rd Street - near Macy's. If you drive, traverse via the Holland Tunnel - but really - why bother. You're better off with the freedom of the PATH trains in combination with the NYC Transit System and WALKING. NYC is best enjoyed on foot. We searched websites obsessively until we found this gem – we recommend it, and we will call this our NYC “home.”

Just got back from my first-ever visit to NYC and stayed at this hotel on the advice of a friend. It was markedly cheaper than staying in Manhattan (I saved $150 just by not having to park in NYC), and it was clean, had great service, and was a short five-minute walk to the PATH train to NYC. The staff at the hotel were courteous and knowledgable. Jersey City itself isn't the nicest city around, but the area where the hotel is located is extremely safe and well-lit. I will definately stay at this hotel again when visiting NYC both because of the price and the quality stay.

I purchased my vacation through Priceline, but before buying it it I looked through the reviews here in Tripadvisor... GREAT SOURCE!! Bottom line, a comfortable place with kitchen and bathroom. For those in a budget that want to go to NYC this is a good choice. The hotel is in between two PATH subway stations (about 3 blocks away); there's also a NJ transit Light Rail that stops 1 block from the hotel. Beware to ask for Smoking on No Smoking room; the hotel gave us a Smoking room and it reeked of smoke... disgusting! The staff accomodated us on a Non-smoking room with no problem. The hotel also provides for free parking for guests... a PLUS! The area around the hotel is a residential-business area. The hotel is about 2 to 3 blocks away from Newport Mall... we did not had an opportunity to go there though... the closest restaurant a Chili's (1 block away). Overall the hotel was good, clean and a good option for those in a budget. I would recommend this hotel.

We were in town for a wedding, and stayed here as an alternative to staying in Manhattan where hotel rooms were in excess of $300/night due to a United Nations event being in town.
We stayed 9/17/05 for one night...room was meticulously clean, and the staff was helpful and kind. We arrived early and as expected, we were asked to come back after 3PM to check in to our room. We showed back up promptly at 3PM, and were checked in without incident...as committed.
The location is in a refurbished, clean and safe area...and is a short 3-5 block walk to the NJ Path station and Newport Centre Mall. Hotel can't be more than a few years old. The NJ Path (transit system) was a breeze to take into mid-town Manhattan and cost $1.50 each way, running 24/7. The location of this hotel near the banks of the Hudson River made for fantastic skyline views of NYC. You can truly appreciate the beauty and majesty of NYC when you stay on the WEST side of the Hudson! Things worked out so well, we are already booked to go back in mid-December for a family trip to see Statue of Liberty (ferry is within a few miles of hotel), and tour the holiday displays in Manhattan.
