“Nice, affordable, clean rooms. Simple staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2007

This hotel met our needs -- a cheap hotel near Manhatten for 3 rooms for a teen birthday to Broadway. The rooms were quite nice -- absolutely NO complaints. The staff was basic and pleasant, but struggled with simple requests. Note, I think the PATH train just south (by the Hyatt) may be closer than the one they sent us to at Pavonia.

  • Liked — Affordable yet near to Manhatten, clean
  • Disliked — Late night transportation in and out of NYC was sloooow!

Great place to stay, near PATH train, grocery store, some restaurants... Very secure place (for New Jersey) with a free parking. Since it's in a commercial and financial district, very calm on weekends.

Room is big! Big desk, fridge, little kitchen, big bathroom and a comfortable bedroom.

Great view on Manhattan from the 6th floor!!

  • Liked — Location (near Manhattan) for half the price of NYC hotels
  • Disliked — Not so much restaurants that you can go by feet

I've stayed here a couple of times now. It's worth understanding from the outset what the formula for this chain is: slightly longer stays (but you can book one night) and looking after yourself (so no daily maid service, no daily linen change, no onsite catering).

Rooms are a reasonable size - try to avoid getting one on the side of the building adjacent to the Light Rail - there is a sharp bend nearby and the carriage wheels screech as the trains go around. and in room you have a fridge, cooker, microwave, cooking pots and pans, crockery and cutlery.

They have a small shop onsite where you can buy essentials (including frozen TV dinners etc).

The PATH station is nearby, as is Harborside Light Rail station. The hotel has a shuttle service to the local area. The shuttle will take you to the supermarket, but you need to make your own arrangements to get back.

I didn't drive, but they've got ample parking on site (free to guests I think - but double check that for yourself).

Certainly a much more economic alternative than staying on Manhattan. The PATH makes it really easy to get across.

Whilst staying here, why not check out Liberty State Park just a few stops up the line on the Light Rail - or for a choice of dining try Hoboken - other way on the Light Rail.

Part of the InterContential Group, so your InterConti Frequent Guest card works here.

The evening views across to Manhattan are very nice.

April 26-28/07
Arrived at Newark airport and had no trouble getting to the hotel (Airtrain to NJ Transit to PATH). Took about 40 minutes. If you want, take the NJ bus to the PATH instead of the train to save $6.
The hotel is clean and newer. It is about a 5-7 minute walk from either the Pavonia PATH or Exchange Place PATH. The area is being rebuilt and is safe.
Great mall and supermarket nearby as well.
They were painting the hallways and doors as well as recarpeting the halls. Didn't matter to us but if you had a sensitivity to paint fumes you might have a problem. Mind you, they should be done by now. No smell entered the room.
The room was a nice size. Very clean. Fridge, stove, microwave, iron, table free high speed. No safe.
The staff were nice and they have a shuttle to different spots. Good location, great bargain.
The hotel is very close and convenient to NYC without the price. If you don't like walking and plan to go into the city alot try to get a hotel closer to the stations (Hyatt or Courtyard). After a day in the city you have find the extra 10 minute walk torture.
We have no qualms about this hotel. GREAT spot

I stayed at the Candlewood Suites in Jersey City for two nights while I was doing a quick business trip. I'm not usually a fan of extended stay type hotels, especially on short visits, but after a couple days I could see the pros and cons to the place.

Pros:

If you get tired of walking to and from the nearby restaurants, you'll have a kitchen, microwave and stove in your room to work with. In my room, all the appliances and utensils were spotless and didn't appear to have ever been used.

You can borrow DVD's and videotapes from the front desk to watch in your room.

There are cook-it-yourself type items (soup, entrees, etc.) available in the downstairs shop.

Cons:

"Suites" is a marketing term. My room was the size of a studio apartment, with only a smaller window with a view of...... parking lots, offices and condo buildings (the Trump Towers) under construction. The hotel is very close to the river separating Jersey City from Manhattan, but the way the building is oriented and the number of buildings, no room has an actual view of the water or New York City across the water. You can see the city and the river from the windows at the end of the hallways, though.

Thoughtful things:

A corkboard on the wall with thumbtacks so you can tack up a "to do" or grocery list.

There's Internet access in the rooms, but you'll need to bring an Ethernet cable (also can be borrowed from the front desk). There's no WiFi here.

My office had booked a "smoking" room for me, although I don't smoke. I wasn't able to switch myself to a non-smoking room, but the smoking room I did get had no odor of smoke at all.

The PATH trains that go into New York City are about 4 blocks away (or a 10 minute walk though some slightly sketchy areas and buildings under construction).

There *are* restaurants near the hotel. Just not very obviously. I found a very wonderful "modern" Indian restaurant on the ground floor of an office building behind the hotel about one street away. There's also a huge collection of restaurants near the PATH station.

The front desk typically has anywhere from 1-3 young (inexperienced?) people working the counter, and they seem to get easily overwhelmed when people are checking in or checking out. Just sit on the chairs and relax. They'll get to you. Eventually.

The rate my company paid was just over $200 per night which, even with its proximity to NYC, I thought excessive for a extended stay hotel with once-a-week maid service. In short, this place may indeed be good for extended stays and/or business trips, but for short trips to Manhattan, spend a little extra money and get onto Manhattan instead.

  • Liked — it's an "okay" business or extended stay hotel
  • Disliked — Not that much of a value; glad I didn't pay for it!

My stay at the hotel was quite pleasant. The room was large, very reasonably priced for the area, clean, and convenient.

Things didn't go so well at checkout time. I was in a bit of a hurry and just signed the bill after making sure that only accomodations and phone charges were on the bill. However during my trip back I realized that they had charged me for 3 nights when I had only stayed for two.

As soon as I realized this I called and made sure that the charges were corrected. And, to give them credit, they were, although I really don't see a good reason for the mistake happening in the first place. But that's when things started getting really messed up.

The hotel placed authorizations on my credit card for each individual nights, then on the bill with the extra night, and then again on the corrected bill. On top of that I had the authorization from Travelocity for the original two-night booking. So in total I had authorizations totalling four and a half times my stay there!

I was now well over my credit limit. I had to skip eating on the trip back so I could use cash to pay for gas. The incorrect authorizations took a whole week to clear up. I complained about this to the hotel chain but have received no response from them whatsoever.

So my recommendation, despite the fact that the hotel itself was nice, clean and cheap, is to avoid booking at this hotel unless you're checking in with an AMEX card or have the trip prepaid by your company.

  • Liked — The hotel itself is nice, clean, roomy and inexpensive.
  • Disliked — Multiple billing issues that really wrecked the trip.

The Candlewood Suites was clean, quiet, dark at night and provided a lot of space--including a kitchen with a 2 burner stove and a bedroom with a door. And free parking, and a partial view of the New York skyline. It had a sofabed for my daughter.

That's the good news. The so-so news is the location, in the Jersey City office district, close to a PATH station to New York City and the light rail to Hoboken. Full of people Monday-Friday, 9-5, dead the rest of the time.

The bad news was that the thermostat in my room was broken our entire two day stay, despite a promise to fix it the first night. Thus the room, especially the living room part of it was overheated in the middle of an 11 degree snap, while the room was posted with messages about not wasting energy (at one point I had to open the window in that to cool the bedroom down). More bad news was that there was no hot water the first morning when I tried to take a bath--the hotel had known they had a boiler problem but not bothered to tell me when I checked in (they did get it fixed by the end of the day). Still more bad news was that several keycards just didn't work, they failed to open either the room or the parking area. A final minor thing was a note about daylight savings time that was so badly written that you had to decipher what they were telling you.

The really bad news was that this cost $170 per night, which just seems like way too much, even to someone used to big city prices.

I was debating whether to give them a 3 or a 2.
