“A great place to stay when visiting NYC”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2008

If you're looking for a nice, clean and inexpensive place to stay on a visit to New York City, look no further than the Holland Motor Lodge. It's not the Plaza or the Waldorf-Astoria, but my room was very clean, it had a comfortable king-sized bed, cable TV, free parking, donuts and coffee in the morning (as well as a stack of Daily News papers for free in the lobby) ... all just a couple blocks from the Newport/Pavonia PATH train station. The staff was helpful in providing directions, and there's a public use computer in the lobby for internet access. In spite of being right at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, the neighborhood was safe and the 10-minute walk to the train station was not a big problem. After a long day walking through Manhattan, an excellent place for an evening meal near the hotel is the Hamilton Park Ale House.

The place is well located, that is true, but I do not plan to go back. The room is shabby, dark and smelly, the braekfast is a joke (it is a counter at the corner of the reception, where you can grab a donnut and stand, because there is no place to sit). I would specially advise couples with children to be aware, as you get very loud couples (you know what I mean) that rent the rooms for an hour or two. I found the place also pretty unsafe, with so many people coming and going to have casual sex. No, I would not recommend this place at all.

Was here on a vacation - wanted to experiece NYC and this was a good choice! close distance to the Statue of Liberty/ Ellis Island and the Ferry Ride to/from Lady Libery from the New Jersey Side was no wait! We took a tour bus (New York Tours) that picked us up at the hotel and dropped us off there. The hotel was near a restaurant Brownstone Diner - one of the best EVER. I ordered banana walnut pancakes - *drooling* The staff were very helpful..allowed us to check in early after a 18 hour drive to get there and were helping in locating my cell. phone that i left in the room after check out.

Some not so good things: The people in the area seem kind of "shady." And the internet was down the entire time we were there and they didn't seem to be in a hurry to fix it.

WOW, what a surprise. Don't judge a book by it's cover folks. Stayed here for 6 nights in early May. The staff are as friendly and helpful as anywhere we've stayed. Nice clean reception area, internet in lobby. The rooms are clean, a little dated, in-room safe, hair dryer, table chairs, fridge and microwave, alarm clock and well lit, crisp white sheets and towels.

It's a 7 minute walk to the PATH station which takes you right to Manhattan, either up to 33rd or down to the WTC. And it only takes about 10-15 mins. The hotel is in a Very convenient location. We walked 'home' from the subway station at 2am, 1:30am and we never had an unsafe feeling, the walkway is very well lit, patrolled by the Mall Security Co. and Port Authority Police.

If flying into Newark, take BUS #62 out front of terminal to Penn Station, then to subway to Journal Square, transfer to other subway to Pavonia/Newport Station. Total trip cost: $3.75. Forget the $50 taxi ride. Everyone is VERY helfpful, either on the bus or subway they are more than willing to help out.

I recently (27th April to 4th May 2008) spent a week at the Holland Motor Lodge. I had been told that the area was dodgy but the reviews of the hotel were favourable overall. I can only say that my stay there was great. The room had a double bed, fridge, microwave, safe, TV set, alarm clock. The bathroom had a toilet , basin and a bath with overhead shower. The breakfast was not a greasy affair. Fruit, pastries, cereal, coffee, tea and orange juice. You helped youself and took it to your room where you ate in bed, if you preferred. On my way out to Manhattan, I grabbed a pastry and an orange juice and was on my way. About 10 mins through the Mall to the PATH train station. The area at night is well lit and not a soul around. The area looked neat and clean and not run down at all. Just watch out at the pedestrian crossing...no one stops for you!! There was no noise from the Holand tunnel traffic, mainly because most of the time it was at a stand still or moving very slowly.
On my return to the hotel at night, the room was made up and spotlessly cleaned. I had small change on the dresser and it had not been touched at all.
I would have no hesitation to recommend this hotel and, if I ever go back to New York, this is where I will stay.
Best Regards
RadioMark

I just got back from NYC and stayed here for 3 nights. Like what most review here, the holland motor lodge is great for value. The room is very clean, which is the most important thing to me. The staff is very helpful. The location is great, the PATH train (PAVONIA/NEWPORT) station is about 15mins walk. It cost abour $2 dollars per trip to Manhattan. They do have 10trips ticket that cost $13. The trip down to the city (33rd street) is around 15mins while down to WTC is only 10mins. Booking direct with the hotel is much cheaper. Another plus point is that, the lodge offers free continental breakfast. Free coffee and hot drinks all day long!! Just excellent. Will definetely stay here again. - vc, malaysia-

I stayed at the Holland Motor Lodge with my two sons to visit NYC. It was a great deal. It is not a luxury hotel but it served the purpose of providing a place to sleep after lots of sightseeing. The Path was so easy-one train went right into NYC which we went into many times, even late at night, and the other we took to the World Trade Center one day. The staff was helpful with all of my questions and provided maps. There are two large chain supermarkets nearby so if we were staying longer I'm sure we would have bought some easy food to make in the microwave in our room. It was only a quick drive to Liberty State Park where you can take a cruise to the Statue of Liberty (Book online if you want to go in the statue but the cut off time to enter is 3:30) The only complaints I have is that the window was hard to open and the room smelt like smoke. One day when we stopped in our room between outings it actually smelt like someone had just had a cigarette in our room. I said something to the staff but it did not go away. We were leaving so I did not go back to inquire.
