We chose this hotel while visiting NYC for three days in August by reading the Trip Advisor reviews. At first glance when pulling up, and even entering the hotel you wonder what you have gotten yourself into. The Holland Tunnel is literally outside the window. The funny thing is, you walk a couple of blocks to the Path Train and the neighborhood is completely different - very nice. I cannot say the neighborhood is terrible, but it is not great by any means. Its about as close to Manhattan as you can stay without paying the price. Make sure when you check in you ask for the Path Schedule AND the most important part, the hand drawn map they have to get you to the station which they neglected to give us at check in. The hotel is actually clean on the inside, the rooms are clean. They have wireless internet, a refrigerator in the room and microwave. It is a VERY basic motel, but it does serve the purpose if you are only looking for somewhere to sleep at night. Just do not go there thinking you will be staying at a Hampton or anything like that. It is pretty dated and they do not even accept reservations online, on check in you have to fill in paperwork that they then enter into their computer system. It really is not bad at all, and it served our purpose. Breakfast you can skip here, its just donuts, juice and coffee ... but if you are hungry, its there.

Nothing in the other reviews left me prepared for the Holland Motor Lodge. First, it's really at the mouth of the Holland Tunnel, so you must take on faith that you can to exit into the parking lot at the far right side of the tunnel entrance. Second, the lobby is like a bank branch in a dangerous neighborhood, but with friendly tellers and round-the-clock jelly donuts. The rooms are adequately sized, clean, spartan, and odorless. Finally, you're in Manhattan in less than a half-hour by train, if you're a fast walker. However, the walk is as strange as the motel--the route takes you through a parking lot, a shopping mall, a busy parkway, and a town square. This place is perfect if you're in NJ, in a car, and want a night on the town. Otherwise, spend the extra $200 and stay in the city--the motel is so peculiar it will overwhelm other memories of your NYC vacation.

I must admit I was concerned about staying at the Holland Motor Lodge after reading the previous reviewers experience. I am happy to report I had a very nice and uneventful 3 night/4 day stay with my hubbie, school age boys and parents. I did not experience or suspect any adult activities were going on. The motor lodge was very quiet (except for the street noise as it is located on a busy street...however w/ the AC lightly humming it drowned out the traffic noise), clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I tend to be a " nervous nellie" type and was also concerned about the neighborhood however this too was unfounded we walked back to the lodge from the subway at night all 3 nights and never had any problems or saw anything to be concerned about. You can not beat the price of the Holland Motor Lodge...I found hotels in NYC to be cost prohibitive and was thrilled with the room rates. The location to the subways was also a convenient 10 min walk or so. The complimentary breakfast bar is limited ie coffee, juice, milk, bakery items fruit and cold cereal and there is no room to sit in the small lobby. The rooms are a bit small and perhaps dated but we were there to see NYC not eat a deluxe free breakfast and hang out in the room. I wanted a safe, inexpensive, clean room to stay in and that's what I got!

If you're looking for a nice, clean and inexpensive place to stay on a visit to New York City, look no further than the Holland Motor Lodge. It's not the Plaza or the Waldorf-Astoria, but my room was very clean, it had a comfortable king-sized bed, cable TV, free parking, donuts and coffee in the morning (as well as a stack of Daily News papers for free in the lobby) ... all just a couple blocks from the Newport/Pavonia PATH train station. The staff was helpful in providing directions, and there's a public use computer in the lobby for internet access. In spite of being right at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, the neighborhood was safe and the 10-minute walk to the train station was not a big problem. After a long day walking through Manhattan, an excellent place for an evening meal near the hotel is the Hamilton Park Ale House.

The place is well located, that is true, but I do not plan to go back. The room is shabby, dark and smelly, the braekfast is a joke (it is a counter at the corner of the reception, where you can grab a donnut and stand, because there is no place to sit). I would specially advise couples with children to be aware, as you get very loud couples (you know what I mean) that rent the rooms for an hour or two. I found the place also pretty unsafe, with so many people coming and going to have casual sex. No, I would not recommend this place at all.

Was here on a vacation - wanted to experiece NYC and this was a good choice! close distance to the Statue of Liberty/ Ellis Island and the Ferry Ride to/from Lady Libery from the New Jersey Side was no wait! We took a tour bus (New York Tours) that picked us up at the hotel and dropped us off there. The hotel was near a restaurant Brownstone Diner - one of the best EVER. I ordered banana walnut pancakes - *drooling* The staff were very helpful..allowed us to check in early after a 18 hour drive to get there and were helping in locating my cell. phone that i left in the room after check out.

Some not so good things: The people in the area seem kind of "shady." And the internet was down the entire time we were there and they didn't seem to be in a hurry to fix it.

WOW, what a surprise. Don't judge a book by it's cover folks. Stayed here for 6 nights in early May. The staff are as friendly and helpful as anywhere we've stayed. Nice clean reception area, internet in lobby. The rooms are clean, a little dated, in-room safe, hair dryer, table chairs, fridge and microwave, alarm clock and well lit, crisp white sheets and towels.

It's a 7 minute walk to the PATH station which takes you right to Manhattan, either up to 33rd or down to the WTC. And it only takes about 10-15 mins. The hotel is in a Very convenient location. We walked 'home' from the subway station at 2am, 1:30am and we never had an unsafe feeling, the walkway is very well lit, patrolled by the Mall Security Co. and Port Authority Police.

If flying into Newark, take BUS #62 out front of terminal to Penn Station, then to subway to Journal Square, transfer to other subway to Pavonia/Newport Station. Total trip cost: $3.75. Forget the $50 taxi ride. Everyone is VERY helfpful, either on the bus or subway they are more than willing to help out.
