This past Memorial Day I visited Liberty State Park in Jersey City. It is an amazing location steeped in history of early settlers, 19th century commerce, commuter rail lines, a rear view of the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island; a gorgeous view of lower Manhattan, and now is home to a memorial listing the names of victims from the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. The park was beautifully set up yet requires some reconstruction of the former Central Railroad of NJ terminal at the old ferry dock due to damage inflicted by tropical storm Sandy. It is a jewel to be treasured in Jersey City. It is also accessible to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island Ferry and is next to a marina.

Good park to hang out on a nice weekend.
The park is huge and you can get views of downtown Manhattan and statue of Liberty from certain areas.

There is a small fee during summer months but its usually free if you enter after 6 PM i think (dont exactly remember)

it does get crowded during the weekends but you will still find plenty of room for your self.
And parking isn't an issue either.. mostly available if you get there before 11AM. (or after 6PM)
and you can also always park outside the park entrance if the park closes. And just walk around during the evenings.

This park and it's boardwalk are very well done. The views of Manhattan across the Hudson, are stunning. You can also of course cruise to the statue of liberty from here.

I've been to Liberty Island a few times. But, I had absolutely no idea how wonderful and great Liberty Park was. The only problem that I found was the parking area. Horrible! The park is free, and it has an incredible view of Lower Manhattan, Ellis Island, Battery Park, and Liberty Island. Although, you can only see the Statue of Liberty from the back. You can also take the ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island. Great place for a family BBQ.

We loved the convenient location; easy access to public transportation; the clean bathrooms and showers; the friendly neighbors; being near the water. Jersey city is practically brand-new! The neighborhood was very nice and the walk to the train to New York was easy, pain-free and we felt very safe.
