We visited for breakfast and again for lunch. Their menu choices are innovative, well presented and very well prepared. It is a fun place, not pretentious with good service and one I recommend

Wow! Finally an innovative breakfast/brunch restaurant in our area. This eatery is still listed on TripAdvisor as being in West Orange; but I stumbled onto it searching Google and Zagat for something new for brunch. (Come on TripAdvisor, get with it!) Sweet Basil’s was at a disadvantage for our first meal there since we went with high expectations, based on the reviews on Google and its rating on Zagat. That it actually exceeded our expectations is amazing. We tried several of their innovative and creative brunch dishes: Shrimp Benedict, Poached Pear Vanilla Bean French Toast, and Country Skillet (ok, so this one’s not so innovative). The skillet was good (we’ve had better, although not in New Jersey), but the Benedict and French toast were stupendous. While the caramel sauce on the French toast can be a bit much when you get to the 2nd piece, no one’s forcing you to use it all. The French toast itself (using thick slices of challah bread) was cooked to perfection – no uncooked parts inside and just the right amount of crunch on the outside. The poached pear was a great compliment. I thought the Shrimp Benedict was the star of the show. Served in a crisp tortilla bowl, the portion was large but you didn’t get tired of it. What a great creation, perfectly blended so that no one ingredient overpowered the others. We went during the week so it wasn’t crowded. We’ll try it on a weekend but I bet it’ll be packed. I suggest ordering different dishes and sharing so you get to taste as many as possible. If you look at their menu, you might think that they couldn’t pull it off – but they do and it’s definitely worth going, even if there’s a wait. We’re looking forward to returning to Sweet Basil’s.

Traveled to West Orange until the restaurant moved to Livingston. Now we moved to West Orange, so we have to go to Livingston. Would not go to any other place before 2 pm for a meal.

As local residents this is the best casual restaurant in town. Feels like a NYC neighborhood bistro. Generally excellent cooking, if you like small plates you will love this place. Also, great breakfast/brunch. Finally, its BYOB- what more can you ask for. Only complaints, parking is a hassle.

After going through the tree top adventure course and zip line at the turtle back zoo, we were in the mood for a good dinner. We sure got it at Sweet Basil. My hubby and I ordered the tuna tarter and an avocado bruschetta that were both top quality and very yummy. Our entrees were just ok. We ordered the steak frites and the baby back ribs. It was definitely edible - no complaints- but not a wow factor there. Then we had desserts.... WOW!!! We had the brownie cake and the skyscraper chocolate cake. Both Awesome!!!
We would definitely come back....
