“New York Alternative”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

My friend and i went to New York for a few days we stayed at the Best Western Plus.

The hotel is an airport hotel near to Newark Airport, however it is much cheaper than staying in Manhatton and it is fine, we shared a twin room which had everything that you would expect, very clean and tidy. There was free wifi $2 per day for the safe, the bonus is it has a free shuttle bus to and from Penn station which takes you straight into Manhatton either straight to the WTC or if you make one change it goes upto 33rd street., the shuttle bus runs on the hour to and from Penn station (last bus back is 11pm) the train fair is a fixed $2.50 .
All in all a good hotel if your on a bit of a budget.

Very cool hotel three minutes away from the airport.
They have free shuttles on there schedule, outside of there schedule you will need to pay. Shuttles runs from P4 Air train to the hotel. From the Newark Penn Station as well. The shuttle will bring you to the Outlet Collection Jersey Gardens and pick you up for a fee.
Easy check in, taking the elevator up to your room. Using access card to enter your room. Doesn't always work fine that's why they give you two.
Great room, i got double queen no smoking. Big screen TV with direct TV. Even had a microwave and a coffee machine. Great bathroom with cold & working hot water. WiFi is free with good internet speed.
There is a safe, you need to ask reception to operate or even pay a fee, I didn't use it.
Breakfast was included, normal American breakfast. All you can eat. The is also a small Gym so you can do your workout.
Big screen when having breakfast, great seating with comfortable atmosphere so you can really enjoy your stay.
Special wake-up calls if you need them and for the early birds the basic breakfast is open around 4am. I had a great stay, nice staff.
I'll be returning soon!!

Room Tip: Close to the elevator, non smoking

Shuttle bus failed to pick us up twice at busy Newark. Were told it would arrive very soon, waited, nothing. Called back, was told van is white on second request. It was black, stopped at the far end from us and then raced past us as we were at the far end of pick up area. When finally picked up, driver said we were in the wrong place and we weren't paying attention so it was our fault. Apparently he went by us twice and it Took 50 minutes to be picked up (after 40 hour trip). Reception had one guest there when we arrived, having a reservation problem, she completely ignored us, no eye contact, even when the guest was calling on his cell re reservation. I had to step up and ask if we could check in now as I was going to lose my mind.

Someone tried to come into our room and opened the door at 1130pm, even though it had do not disturb on it. Tub stained and patched. AVOID.

Room Tip: Don't go, choose the Holiday Inn nearby, been there it is good

Check in & check out was quick & efficient
Food in the restaurant was very good & reasonably priced. Hats off to the bartender/server who had a very positive attitude, friendly & always smiling, taking into fact that she was the only one managing the bar, taking orders & serving the food to 24 people (she made a perfect double JD&Coke too) ..........Excellent
Had a slight problem with the bathroom & front desk changed our room in 15 minutes which is great
Suggestion... An on-site convenient store would be a welcome addition

This is the second time my family has stayed at this property, once in 2010 and again just a few weeks ago. Both times we used this hotel to spend the night before embarking on a Celebrity Cruise to Bermuda out of Cape Liberty. They have a great stay and park package - we paid just over $200 (incl. taxes) for one night lodging, parking for 7 nights, continental breakfast, and free shuttle to port.

Both times I have been very pleasantly surprised by the quality and cleanliness of the rooms - definitely more than enough for the less than 12 hours that we were there. Staff was friendly and helpful, and everything worked like clockwork. Getting to and from the port was a breeze, and the shuttle drivers (I didn't get the feeling that they were hotel employees) were very pleasant, particularly the one on the return trip to the hotel. He was extremely friendly, knowledgeable about the area, and kept up a very interesting commentary on local politics and developments door to door. Once we arrived back at the hotel, it took just a few minutes for the staff to bring our car around. Unfortunately, the car was coated with pollen or dust, and we spent considerable time trying to clean it off the windshield. I don't know if the port parking is covered, so we may have experienced this slight inconvenience regardless.

The one negative that I will comment on is the continental breakfast. I never have very high hopes for these, but this one was particularly bad. By the time we got down to the dining room around 9 or 9:30, many items were out (and slow to be replenished) and I literally stuck to the floor where someone had probably spilled juice. The coffee was undrinkable. Given that we were hours away for a never-ending supply of food (i.e., a cruise), I decided to stick with a box of raisin brain. One person in my party tried a sausage biscuit that wasn't burned, but for some reason, tasted burned (and was inedible), and another wanted to make a waffle but the line was too long.

Also, if you need to do any last-minute shopping or want to have dinner, it is not terribly easy to get to and from the hotel. But in my experience, this is typical of Newark. It's not that you aren't near anything, it's just that the roads can be hard to navigate (e.g., you can't return the same way you went) if you aren't familiar with them.

All that being said, I would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again before my next cruise out of Jersey!

I was laying over for an early morning flight and choose the Best Western based on price and convenience (airport shuttle bus). Overall my experience was good...room was clean and appeared to be recently rennovated, staff were helpful and friendly, free breakfast was more than just cold bagels and coffee (i.e. make your own pancakes, scrambled eggs, pastries, several juices, etc.). Internet was free, although a bit spotty as it discontinued a few times. Only negative was the fitness room...a bit cramped with limited equipment, but hey, you can't have everything. And as I mentioned, the free shuttle to the airport in the morning was great!

Free shuttle to Newark airport terminals, other shuttles guests have to pay for (eg Newark Penn Station, for service to Manhattan). The hotel is very close to the Newark Airport train station served by Amtrak and NJ Transit, but thanks to fenced in parking lots and container terminals, it is impossible to walk from the hotel to this train station. The rooms are just great, featuring new furniture and very fine bathrooms, the breakfast is very decent and the sleep quality is just perfect. I'd stay there again, anytime. Friendly reception staff.
