SpringHill Suites Newark Liberty International Airport
Ranked #5 of 16 Hotels in Newark
Reviewed 18 December 2013

My Wife, Daughter and I stayed at the SpringHill Suites Newark liberty airport as our base for visiting New York City. This is a very nice super clean hotel with a great staff. We really found everything perfect at the hotel itself. The shuttle bus to and from the airport was reliable. I guess a downside was their isn't anything near the hotel. Our flight was cancelled one day due to the airport being closed because of a snowstorm. It would have been great if We could have walked somewhere for something to do or to eat. This wasn't that deal breaker as We could have went to the airport for food, We decided just to go back into Manhattan. While I would definitely recommend this hotel for an overnight stop from the airport I would not recommend it or any hotel in the area as a base for touring New York City. We found it to be a hassle and expensive. 1st You have to take the hotel shuttle to the airport, walk upstairs, catch the air train, walk downstairs wait on a N.J. transit train and take it to New York Penn station in the city where You have to walk out. The cost for the 3 of us was $75 round trip total. I've seen the times that some people have posted for this and We found it took much longer. I suppose of You hit the shuttle bus, airtrain and train just right and and didn't have to wait any of them it might be closer to the time people are saying. By the time We added the $75 transportation to the price of the Hotel and figured in the hassle We could have put some money with it and stayed in Manhattan. Now We probably couldn't have stayed in as nice a hotel as the Springhill suites but We felt that it would be worth it and will do that next time.

We stayed at the Springhill Suites the night before cruise the Princess line to New England. The hotel was easy to find with excellent directions provided but the hotel for our GPS. Check in was a breeze and we were offered menus of local establishments that deliver food to the hotel. Other Marriott hotels are within walking distance and the Courtyard has a lovely bistro offering beverages and light dinner fare. We ate there and were pleased with what we ordered.

The room was large and spacious, not crowded at all. The sitting area was perfect for tv viewing. The bathroom was separate from the sleeping area and well stocked with soft fluffy towels. The bed was very comfortable and a just right firmness of the mattress. Breakfast was the usual hotel fare but well stocked.

There were many cruisers in the hotel and both the Brooklyn and Bayonne terminals are near by. It was an easy drive to Brooklyn, about 30 minutes or less.

I would highly recommend this hotel for pre and post cruisers out of the ports mentioned.

I have stayed here numerous times on trips that require overnight stays at EWR. This was the first time since renovating the lobby, and a nice improvement.

The room was big, clean and very comfortable. There are a few local restaurants around as well as a large mall a couple of blocks away. The shuttle runs 24 hours a day and it is a short 5 min ride to the airport.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. I did have a drain in the shower that did not work well and reported it to the front desk when I checked out in the morning. They were "upset" as this problem and stated that they would fix it right away. As a good will gesture they actually credited my Marriott account with 7000 bonus points...Thank you.

Great place to stay if you plan to use ferry to Statue of Liberty and other NY locations. Reasonable room rates and good breakfast. Complimentary parking in this area is a rare one! Park in Staten Island and take a ferry to NYC. Good rooms with friendly staff. Good breakfast though the area gets crowded in the morning and the staff were overwhelmed on Thanksgiving eve.

My wife and I along with our 10 month old twin girls spent two nights at this Springhill Suites location near Newark Airport as a base for visiting New York City. After all was said and done, we departed with mixed feelings, scoring fair in some categories and poorly in others. Located literally right off the Lincoln Highway 1, about a 15 minutes drive from New York City and 5 minutes from downtown Newark, we found this hotel to be ideally situated for our sightseeing goals. That said, here's the takeaway:

First impression/arrival - We arrived in the late afternoon and had no troubles checking in, and were happy to see luggage carts available for all of our gear. This is one of the busier Springhill Suites locations, so expect to encounter a fair bit of traffic in the lobby with people coming and going to catch flights. The lobby itself is pleasant, with a large breakfast area located directly to the right of the main entrance and opposite the front desk. There is also a area to the left of the desk to purchase snacks and drinks. That said, our initial impression was a relatively positive one.

Front desk staff - The staff who received us at the desk were both courteous and efficient given how busy they all seemed to be with the flow of people coming and going. Checking in was easy, and were settled in our room within minutes after arriving. No issues here at all, even helping us with directions to the train station in Newark we'd need to get to New York.

Location - As aforementioned, this hotel's location is super convenient for travelers on many levels. It's proximity to the Airport, downtown Newark and New York City make it an ideal base for exploration of the area. Take note though, as mentioned by previous reviewers, the entrance to the hotel literally sneaks up on you off of the highway, and a little hard to see when traveling at highway speed. If you're navigating by GPS, I suggest sticking to the right lane and slowing down as the destination approaches so to not to miss it, or you may find yourself in downtown Newark. In summary, a great location as far as a base goes, but unless you have very concise directions or the convenience of a GPS, you may find it a bit of an adventure to find.

Rooms - The room itself was a decent size, with a separate living area that gave us enough space to accommodate us and our two girls. Our room came equipped with the standard features/amenities you'd expect from this chain, with the added bonus of soundproof windows that assist with minimizing the noise of planes taking off/landing, given its close proximity to the airport. On the downside, the one undesirable aspect of the room was the relatively thin walls that seemed to carry noise from adjoining rooms into ours, and vice-versa. One instance comes to mind when our girls were up crying one night, only to have someone bang on the wall next to us, this was a first for us. Neutral takeaway on the rooms.

Value - We booked this hotel online and obtained what we thought was a good rate given the value we got back in return. On the whole, we found this Springhill Suites hotel to have a good rate given its proximity to the bank-busting hotels in New York City just 15 minutes away.

Breakfast - A bit of a mixed impression here mixed with some frustration. The breakfast itself include a fairly large spread of items to choose from, which was a definite plus. That said, despite the variety, the breakfast area was swamped with people. I'm not sure if this is the norm for this hotel given its "airport" label, or if it was simply bad timing, but I literally had to wade through the hordes of people swarming the food area just to grab a bagel. In addition, the waffle maker was completely off limits given the long queue of people waiting to use it, while other guests had little regard for the keeping the area clean, with several food items strewn across the counters. I'd have to say it was a breakfast fail, primarily due to the food area's poor layout to accommodate the throngs of people that appear to filter through this hotel (i.e. a second waffle maker would have gone a long way).

Amenities - Probably the biggest failure during our stay at this hotel, specifically where business services and wifi access were concerned. For some very strange reason, wifi is only accessible in the lobby, and choppy access to boot. Nowhere else on the first floor (where our room was located) is it accessible, a frustrating inconvenience for all those with smartphones, tablets and laptops. To compound this, the "business services" lounge only contained two computer terminals, perpetually in use, both of which had very poor/slow internet connections and a printer that was down during the entire length of our stay. All in all, a major fail in this area, and never really could figure out why an airport hotel such as this wouldn't have widespread wifi access throughout the hotel like comes standard in every other Springhill Suites we've stayed in to date. This is an issue the hotel truly needs to prioritize if they have any aspirations of marketing themselves as a business traveler hotel and minimize complaints. We ran into several guests during our stay that were very unhappy with their inability to connect to the internet.

The Bottom Line - A pleasant two-nights stay, despite its shortcomings.. Top marks go toward the convenient location, albeit scoring not so favourably on its breakfast and business services. Three stars, but would recommend only to those seeking an affordable base to explore New York City with modest expectations.

Room Tip: We tried to obtain a room at the end of the hall upon arrival, given the fact that we had two 10-mon...

This is our first stay there. We have stayed numerous times before early morning flights from EWR at the Fairfield Inn next door and a few times at the Courtyard next to the Fairfield .

It is not that hard to find the SpringHill Suites but can be tricky if you are not familiar with the area. It is located on 1 & 9 South. It is very convinient to the self-park and valet parking facilities located further south on 1 & 9. I think the private lots are more secure than the hotel long term parking facilities. The exit to EWR off 1 & 9 is just south of the hotel.

If you provide an eMail address in your reservation the manager sends a set of detailed photos and instructions on how to navigate the roads there.

The Springhill is the best value (lowest cost) and the "suites" at the Springhill have the larget rooms of the three there.

My only complaint about the Springhill (and the Fairfield and Courtyard) is that the through-the-wall reverse cycle A/C-heater units' compressors make a lot of noise when running.

Room Tip: The "suites' with two double beds have a lot of space in the bedroom.

Nice Stay at this hotel for one night. I went for a wedding and just spent one night here. Overall nice stay. The signs directing you to the hotel is great, given the location is a little confusing if you not paying attention. Nice hotel with contemporary decor. The room was nice, we had a two room suite- which means 2 double beds with a living room area. Not two bedrooms. The pool it self is small, but its a pool. The breakfast area is SMALL- Lots of people is this very small space. We had to eat our food in a conference room in the back. Had to wait on line to make my waffle for about 10 minutes. Why you ask? Because people were making 2-3 waffles. They only had 3 stations for make your own waffles. Also something to take note of, there are no restaurants near the hotel. If you want something to eat, you have to order from menu's the hotel provides and have it delivered.
