SpringHill Suites Newark Liberty International Airport

Stayed 2 nights at this hotel last May. This is a very good choice if you a) having a stopover at Newark Liberty International Airport b) have your own car and want to explore Manhattan and other nearby north New Jersey/west of NYC area. People looking to use public transport will find this hotel a pain. As noted by several other reviewers, this property is located on a piece of land (on which sits 2 other Marriott-related properties) that is sandwich between very busy highways and is practically across the highway from Newark Airport but is indeed quite tricky to find if you don't get your GPS settings correct. Fortunately, the Assistant Hotel Manager send us a welcoming email with the precise GPS location for the hotel a couple of days before our arrival and that really helps! Once we entered the location details, Google Maps took care of the rest with no issues at all. Greeted by a very warm welcome and efficient lady at the front desk who promptly took care of the check in process. Hotel lobby is bright and of contemporary design. Guest rooms are huge and equipped with mini fridge, a microwave, excellent pillow + mattresses and great soundproofing, so despite its location we had a very good sleep. Free wifi is speedy and hot breakfast is provided free of charge every morning. Will consider staying here again if i the area.

very pleasant room and hotel in a row of hotels near the airport. no restaurant. guests must order delivery or walk about three blocks to first of three hotels, where there is a bar and limited but adequate menu. Other guests stayed there for tourism in New York. A bit difficult to find though right off the highway.

Stayed here twice in just over a week - once the night before an early flight out of Newark Liberty and once after the returning late flight in. First and foremost, the hotel shuttle bus was on time (even at 4:30 AM and later during a thunderstorm), was large and comfortable (ie, not just a van) and the driver did the heavy lifting getting our bags on board. Second, for a very reasonable rate they allow you to leave your car in their secure parking lot while you're travelling. Third, the hotel is clean and comfortable and quiet. You get both a bedroom and sitting/work area with couch and desk. There's a big flat screen TV you can see from the bed and the couch. What more do you need in an airport hotel? Oh wait, fourth, there's a free breakfast - good coffee, juices, fruit, cereal, eggs, breads and pastries. The only down side is that there's no on-site restaurant. The friendly desk staff offered us take out menus and we had pizza, pasta and sodas delivered for $20 plus tip. We will definitely stay here again when the need arises.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the central elevators mean you don't have to schlep your bags far

I hate staying in Manhattan! We usually have a car, we are traveling with kids and paying so much money for such a little room is usually not my cup of tea.... I like to stay in Newark and take the train in or drive and park for the whole day in an area, usually stay with Hampton inn, this time went with springhill.

The good :

Big rooms, parking (for $10/night) nice staff, good breakfast, pool, nice rooms, we had a 2-double, one of the beds was horrible the other ok.

The bad, lots of turns and turns to find the hotel, it's on a piece of land that is an island between the highways and if you come from the south you need to loop around 2-3 times to get to the entrance, if you are coming from the north it's just 2 loops......

No food on the island so bring your own or you can order in we ordered some Italian food that was decent and not expensive but took an hour to arrive.

Not sure I will stay here again, just don't like the location (didn't hear any noise from airport or highway... So good soundproofing on the building)

After checking with Tripadvisor & other reviews we decided on this Hotel., I have to say all the other reviews from travelers have to be QUITE Unrealistic, you'd think they are Buying the place for life, even though they just staying 1nite!! How "picky" can you get!. Its a clean place with a shower before or after you travel! Actually we found everyone of staff to be very helpful,. Our room was lovely, large enough to hold all our luggage & convenient to the pool, jacuzzi, & breakfast lounge. We asked for extra towels & were brought promptly, our bed was very comfortable, & was also happy with the large bathroom. We stayed pre-cruise & post cruise also. The continental breakfast is OK, except if you get there past their closing time, you are "out of Luck"! They do offer coffee round the clock, but we overslept & was impossible to get even a piece of fruit! Overall, for a hotel near the airport, with shuttle service, basic clean rooms, & breakfast in the morning,- glad we stayed twice during our vacation.

Room Tip: take advantage of the Hotel directions sent to you!

Of all the hotels in the Newark airport area, this is by far the worst I have ever stayed in. Check in was not pleasant. The guy at reception had a very poor attitude and acted like he was doing me a favor (by doing his job no less). My request for 2 double beds was summarily ignored (reservation was made weeks before). Told that there was only 1 king bed and a pullout available. Parking was around back. It was not very pleasant entering through the back entrance. There were several guests hanging out by the back smoking and using very foul language. Without being judgmental, I did wonder if this property perhaps has homeless people or section 8 housing temporarily staying here. The appearance of these unfortunate guests was making my younger one anxious and feel unsafe. Elevator and hallway on the first floor were filthy. Room was okay size, but very basic. The pullout was terrible, mattress was very thin, you could feel springs poking through and not comfortable at all. Asked for another blanket and told what we had was it. While downstairs at reception asking for another blanket, I heard another reception agent ask a guest checking in if they would like a king or double, so I guess I was given the wrong information there were doubles available. Three of us ended up cramming into the king. Not very restful at all.
Breakfast in the morning was a complete zoo. Not enough tables, food was running out and not very clean. Staff seemed overwhelmed. We decided to skip breakfast here and ate on the road. Upon checkout, I was charged for parking. My rate rules show that self-parking is included (there is no valet). I was told that that was incorrect and that parking is always charged regardless. I asked then why was does it say self parking in the rate rules (I was using a corporate rate). The reception agent told me that just means they have self parking not that it is included. I disagree. No other Marriott would be as deceptive as this. Self parking would be in the description not in the rate rules where it clearly states rate includes: "0.2 miles to office, includes breakfast, wired high-speed Internet, wireless Internet, self parking, airport transportation." She ended up removing the charge but only after some back and forth.
Had this been my first stay at a Springhill Suites I would avoid this chain like the plague, but I have stayed in others which were much much better. This property is not representative and is probably as low as it gets. Poor staff attitudes, not clean, not enough staff and food at breakfast, bare minimum bedding and deceptive rates. Definitely not recommended. I will be following up with Marriott corporate on these plus some other issues encountered during this horrible stay.

Dear Aerobik1,
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent visit to the SpringHill Suites, Newark Liberty. I am disappointed to hear of the issues that you encountered and can assure you that they are certainly not typical of the high standards we set for ourselves in these regards; guest requests should always be honored within reason. We take reservation accuracy and Customer Service very seriously and work hard to ensure a problem free experience for each of our guests; with that being said, admittedly, we sometimes fall short. I apologize sincerely for any inconvenience created by the issues that you encountered. The reason a guest may have been offered a double or king room is due to the fact they may have been checking out before or after you which therefore meant there was availability.
In regards to your comments about parking, Self-Parking as in all Marriott properties’ means you are able to park your car yourself rather than a valet service being offered. The parking rates for our property are displayed on our website and on any third party sites. I apologize you were not aware of this prior to arriving.
Thank you again for your feedback. I hope that you will allow us another opportunity in the future to demonstrate the high level of service that our guests have come to expect from the SpringHill Suites, Newark Liberty.
Regards,
SHSDOS

We stayed at this hotel one night pre-cruise. Be very careful if you are using a taxi to get to the hotel. Our bill from Newark Penn Station to the hotel was $65! It seems the problem was that the address used for the hotel in the Marriott app is not supported by the GPS software of some taxi companies. With respect to the hotel, it was very, very basic. Rooms seemed like dorm rooms. Common areas were nice and the included breakfast was similar to other expanded continental breakfast offerings.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent visit to the SpringHill Suites, Newark Liberty.
I am sorry to hear of the astronomical bill you paid for the short cab ride to the hotel. In the future, kindly contact the hotel and we will recommend a reputable car service as taxis are rare and unreliable in the area.
