We have been going to The Wildwoods for about 20 years now and have stayed in many hotels along way, some are great but many are, simply put, horrible. Not sure why Athens II is listed as a B&B/Inn... must be the word "Inn"? Regardless, Athens II is a motel and like most in Wildwoods is on the older side.
This was not our first stay at Athens II, so we knew about it already and did not hesitate to look there again. The owners have upgraded quite a bit and continue to do so. It's nice to see pride in ownership in an older hotel. First and foremost, the location is amazing. It's a more quiet spot with a view of the beach, and with a simple cross of the street you are on it. There is a heated pool (lit up with color changing lights at night)that is kept up nicely and so warm that if the weather is breezy it doesn't matter. Outdoor foot rinse and shower available by the pool for after the beach. There is a huge new grill for use and sundeck too. There is an elevator and less expensive "breezeway" rooms without a view. Friendly owners, and free coffee in the office/lobby is a nice touch.
The rooms are slightly dated but clean and large. Dated I can live with- but clean is important! The rugs are newer and the fixtures in the bathroom have been updated. We saw some units had a flat screen TV, but ours did not. Also saw some new wooden tables being prepped for installation... like I said it's all about pride of ownership at these older hotels and there are only a handful in our opinion that have that so to find one is a gem. The beds were hard and noisy, every time we turned over they sounded like plastic, but they did look new. Fully stocked kitchen, clean and new refrigerator, but we did not use anything to speak of in the kitchen for our overnight stay.
