Trovato's Due II is, hands down, my favorite New Jersey restaurant. Your meal starts with a complimentary small-plate antipasto: home made bruschetta, soppresatta, parmigiana reggiano and plump green olives -- just a bite of everything. They have a nice wine list, but we always order the house wine and we've never been disappointed.
Antonio Trovato has recently expanded the menu to include tapas or small plates priced nicely between $5.99 and $9.99. Order two or three and you have a nice meal. Their entrees are certainly priced competitively with other area restaurants and their meat, fish and poultry are fresh and beautifully prepared. No need to add salt.....maybe just a little pepper.
This Sunday, we ordered from the special's menu. I had capillacci with a spicy tomato sauce with plump wild mushrooms. Capillacci at Trovato's is a large tortellini made with fresh homemade pasta -- about 3 inches round -- stuffed with creamy mozzarella, capers, sundried tomato and toasted pignoli seeds (pine nuts). The portion was quite large -- 6 capillacci in all. I could only eat two after a shared appetizer of sauteed hot italian sausage with escarole and a risotto with asparagus and baby shrimp.
My husband ordered the Sunday Special -- homemade rigatoni with tomato sauce accompanied by a meatball, a sausage and a braciole, with a dollop of homemade ricotta on the side. A formidable meal, even for a man. Again, everything is very fresh and beautifully seasoned. Cappucino finished the meal.
Leftovers are containered and bagged for you and the bill came to $102, including 3 glasses of house wine, appetizer, salad, main courses and coffee. The wait staff is very attentive, everyone pitches in to make sure you have everything you need. Come back a couple of times and you're family!
