“A gracious hotel in a bygone town”

Several family extended members booked several rooms for a last minute get away. Several generations. Location convenient and lovely. It accommodated every age. It was comfortable, clean, (-a bit more attention to bathroom floors and corners is suggested but overall clean). Beds were comfortable. Staff was helpful and friendly. We have stayed in MANY inns in Ocean and this is one to which we plan to return. Outstanding views and location.

Room Tip: Wifi is available but doesn't work well on second floor. Ground level rooms are available and r...

Home away from home, although we would love to live there someday. Amazingly comfortable hotel, warm friendly staff, clean beyond expectations. No fancy rooms, if that's what you're looking for. Outstanding view from open front porch & ocean-view rooms. Book early!!

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are our first choice, but all rooms are clean & comfortable.

I have been visiting Ocean Grove over twenty years. I love the quaint shops, cafes, quiet location, proximity to busier restaurants in surrounding towns (that you can walk to), boardwalk, beach playground, small water park, mini golf and family friendly atmosphere. It's also within driving distance of the restaurants, amusements parks and clubs of other neighboring towns, but far enough away so you are not staying in the middle of that, if that's what you choose. We have stayed at many locations over the years, but I have to say this was one of my favorites. The staff is really over the top compared to other locations. They are extremely courteous and helpful from the beginning of your reservation until you are saying good bye. I actually remembered Sue, one of the front desk staff, from a previous visit to Ocean Grove many years before at a different b&b years before for similar hospitality. They really went out of their way to make your stay enjoyable and were available until late hours if you had any questions or needed anything. We booked late and our room for its small size was surprisingly accommodating. It was clean and tidy and to our surprise there was a fairly large side ocean view side porch with two full length beach chairs and two other chairs (I think) and a huge (for b&b and hotel standards), really clean bathroom. The room had wifi, remote control a/c and dish cable. The beds were extremely comfortable and the room was clean and tidy (daily maid service available for free) and in the bathroom there were a few sample soaps, lotion, wipes and extra towels. T There is an outdoor porch with big rocking chairs to relax or an indoor living room for checking your email on your laptop. In the morning there is the normal, complimentary with your stay breakfast, and coffee and tea are available daily until late hours. This is truly a lovely b&b with a hotel touch that's really well worth the fist visit and more!

We (Mom and I) have regularly visited the Shawmont for years--and she's been going there regularly since the early 1970s. It's quiet, homey, and comfortable. Over time, it's been updated. Now it is completely air conditioned, and this year they boosted the wi-fi signal so that every room can get online. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it is certainly a convenient thing. Breakfasts are basic: bagels, cream cheese, jam, watermelon, bananas, yogurt, choice of instant oatmeal, coffee, tea, orange juice, some kinds of little Danish sweets....nothing fancy, just basic. If you want a full hot meal, there are restaurants within a 5 min walk that will suffice. I enjoy eating on the porch, watching the dolphins fish. We had a room on the first floor, very comfortable, easy access (Mom is 91, and wobbly). Nice shower with good force behind the water. Flat screen TV with Dish or something like that. Comfortable mattresses. Maids are sweet and efficient. Front desk is excellent. Night manager is efficient and organized, and very compassionate--we had a small crisis at 3 am, and she came to our rescue.
Access to the beach is perfect: cross the street, walk about 2/3 of a block, and the stairs to the beach are right there. Boardwalk has been replaced since Sandy. Pier is still damaged, but it doesn't change beach enjoyment. OG lifeguards are on the ball. It's a nearly perfect place--except for parking, which can be a nightmare on a Saturday night. Or most nights, but Saturday in the summer they have concerts--Neal Sedaka, Beach Boys, etc.
We will go back again. Wonderful place. I recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: rooms on the north side, second floor and higher, have a limited ocean view. Rooms in front have GR...

Our pristine itinerary said Asbury Park. Luckily we ended up at Shawmont Park in Ocean Grove instead.
Check in was swift yet with a very personal touch. The lady at the front desk let us choose between two different rooms. We chose one right up a steep flight of stairs which was tiny but had a little porch and an unspoiled view of the ocean. Nice for sitting there and sipping a glass of wine or whatever your beverage is.
Talking about beverages… Ocean Grove is a dry community! Barbara at the reception pointed this out to us but provided us with excellent recommendations for restaurants in the towns nearby.
Overall, a very pleasant experience! Nothing spectacular, just nice.

Room Tip: Try to get a room view a view of the ocean!

On a tip from a friend, we, and another couple, booked the two best rooms with side-by-side front porches facing the Atlantic. This small hotel is housed in a 100-year-old building, and it's nothing fancy and rather a homey place to stay. Rocking chairs on the ground floor front verandah; small front lounge with a couple of tables for breakfast and an interior lounge in reception with easy chairs and a couch. Included breakfast is basic pastries, bagels, cereal and a small self-service area for coffee & tea and a fridge to store food. Staff friendly and have varying amounts of local knowledge. Room, one floor up, had a king-sze bed, fridge, flat screen TV, bedside table one side and a desk on the other. Bathroom tub and shower and hot water temperature (early April) a few degrees below my ideal. Porch just lovely to see sunrise and watch ocean at dusk. Off-season little car traffic out front but summer, a lot and may be a bit noisy on seamed concrete drive. Otherwise, Ocean Grove is owned by the Camp Meeting Assn. (Methodist) and is a dry town, so no noisy bars. The few restaurants are BYO. We have stayed in Ocean Grove several times before, and we would certainly return here.

Room Tip: Choose one of the front rooms with front porches overlooking the beach and ocean.

My husband, 1-year-old, and I were in town with other family members for a wedding, and we were blown away by the hospitality & location of the Shawmont Hotel! We ended up booking here when the hotel we booked in Asbury Park tried to charge us for the crib we needed to borrow. Can't believe we would've missed out on this place had we stayed with that reservation!

Not only were the staff courteous via email & phone, but they went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable throughout. With the price we paid for our Premium room, we were not expecting a full restroom with a bathtub, a porch, as well as windows you could actually open - and that we'd actually be across the street from the beach, getting to sit on big rocking chairs on the porch to relax! No charge for parking, free breakfast, comfy beds, a free crib, and within walking distance to a cute restaurant & ice cream place called Nagel's. We couldn't have had a better time. They even helped us find a terrific urgent care facility (Central Jersey Urgent Care) when our toddler managed to fill her leg with splinters. These are the kinds of people you want to stay with, so do it!
