“A Favorite Summer Lunch Spot with Friends”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

I have taken three different girlfriends to the Black Trumpet this season and each time was lovely. I like that you can make a reservation and catch the sea breezes. The staff is excellent. All three times we had wonderful service and were never rushed (we did gab about old times way too long) the lunch menu is perfect with meals and sandwiches and salads at reasonable prices, I ordered the lobster salad sandwich once, which was great. I also enjoy the grilled cheese sandwich with crab meat one time. Sandwiches come with corn chips, or fries for $2. extra. I look forward to many more visits. Thank you staff for being so caring and refilling our ice tea glasses.

“Fine dining in an old Victorian Hotel.”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

My wife, myself and 4 other couples visited. Our server Mike was excellent. Taking care of 10 people at once is not easy. Everyone enjoyed their expertly pre fared food. It has a seasonal liquor license. Come mid-November it is a BYOB until mid April.

“Very Inconsistent”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

We had 6 meals. 2 Were the lobster tower at $49. Both were cold, not even warm. Even the mashed potatoes were cold. Waitress took it back. Microwaved our plates and returned it. Ever have microwave lobster? The other 4 meals were good. This is the second time our party of 6 had to send an entrée back. Too bad, it used to be great all the time.

“Way Overpriced and TASTELESS Food!!!”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

This was our first visit to Spring Lake, and our first day there. The Black Trumpet was recommended by a local shopkeeper (We tend to rely on residents rather than visitors when selecting places to eat while on vacation). Unfortunately, we struck out this time. When we arrived, we were told that there was no outside seating available, even though the area was empty. We were shown to a table inside (the multiple dining areas were mostly empty, as well).

I tend to like craft beers. This restaurant had only five selections (all bottled), and with the exception of Magic Hat #9, the others were of the mass produced commercial variety.

In addition to the regular menu, there was a separate "specials" page. For reasons unknown, there are, curiously, no prices posted. The waiter had to recite the prices, which tended to exceed the cost of items on the regular menu. All fish entree specials (with the exception of a lobster "plus" dish), were priced at $39.00. Prices at seaside eateries do tend to run higher than at establishments more inland (location, location, location), and we were aware of that. Nevertheless, the food and value were severely lacking.

I ordered a $39.00 "special", listed as hake topped with crabmeat. Although the portion size was adequate, and the white fish was cooked properly, it was so under seasoned that the word "bland" would be kind as a description. The portion of crabmeat, on top of the fish could barely be discerned. The dish was accompanied by decent saffron rice and warm tasteless spinach with absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. Not even a small dinner salad was included with this overpriced meal.

We passed on dessert, preferring not to prolong the disappointing evening. It is recommended that this establishment be avoided, and that visitors to Spring Lake seek out better restaurants, such as The Mill.

“good dinner”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

We ate dinner here on a busy Saturday night. The food was very good and we had an excellent server. There was no vegetarian menu items but the special pasta was made vegetarian for me. My DH had soft shell crabs which he said were good. We both had good salads to start and excellent desserts!
