“Great BBQ!”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

I met some buds for lunch at their new location in Randolph. Fine dinning this is not... No candles or white linens in this joint! Good thing because this is a BBQ Joint after all. The only thing missing was blues guitar playing over the speakers.

Do yourself a favor and order the ribs and be prepared to get your hands and face dirty. No worries because their are plenty of paper towels on the table. We ordered family style and split a ghost pepper cheese burger - delicious without too much heat, lunch portioned ribs - best ribs that I have had in a long time, and a Beef Brisket sandwich served with a Au Jus styled dipping sauce - every thing you would want - smoky and tender. Everything was fantastic!!!

The employees were friendly and attentive. Typical of southern BBQ you order at the counter and your meal is brought to your table. A must go for the BBQ lover! If I had to hunt for something to complain about it would be the fries. I love crispy fries with lots of spice. They were neither. BUT... the homemade potato chips more than made up for the weak fries.

Looking forward to going back and ordering from the dinner menu!

“not very good”
Reviewed 31 August 2013

Save your money and dine elsewhere. They could not even cook a burger medium rare. I dined with a party of 10 and everyone was disappointed. First time and last time diners. It is a major dissapointment because we live on the lake that the establishment is on.

“Good food, nice location”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

Ok- we went on a mid summer afternoon on Sunday. We aren't familiar with the area so I went to the TripAdvisor app and found this place. For some reason there's plenty of Italian restaurants and even more pizza places in the Skylands of NJ - but we weren't in the mood for res sauce.
Found this place - the reviews were decent - so we tried it.

Got there pretty early for dinner - they ice tea was still on the warm side (server brought extra cups of ice) and the St. Louis ribs were still being smoked.

Waited for the St Louis - big portion, got the sweet and spicy sauce. Good and meaty, sauce was tasty. Spouse got pulled pork sandwich - said it was tasty and the bread was a french bread roll - toasted and seasoned. Which is odd - but it worked.

Sides - the cole slaw was really good - sweet and sour and hardly any mayo. The grilled corn on the cob was feh. Greasy and tasteless - but corn can be variable.

Service was mostly attentive - possible high school kid trying at times a bit too hard to be friendly - but we never lacked anything we needed.

Location - awesome - right on the lake. They have a garden where you can sit in Adirondack chairs and watch the comings and goings on the lake. Just watch for the goose poo.

Definitely will be back next time we're in the area.

“Ribs and Scenery Good ... Hope It Survives”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

The current site that houses Down to the Bone has tried restaurants and bars in many shapes and forms through the years. This out-of-the-way place on Lake Lackawanna dates way back to being called Falconers (a k a the "Karen Ann Quinlan bar"--Google it if you have no idea what I'm talking about). It also was called Smoky's, and probably some other names in between before now.

Down to the Bone's menu is decent. The ribs and barbecue are promoted the most, and my St. Louis ribs were very good. A tad dry, but meaty. Our waitress pushed the mac-and-cheese as one of the best side dishes, so I tried it, but found it to be stuck-together and drab. I really enjoyed the way they did the baked potato -- just one-half of a large potato wedge, spiced and buttered just right.

We stopped in late afternoon/early evening on a Sunday and expected more of a crowd. The bartender swore they were packed the previous Saturday night before.

Down to the Bone is a relaxing venue with a pretty lake view -- the outdoor tables are the most desired, though you also can see water skiers and tubers and the boats from the bar area. I hope it sticks around long enough in this shape and form to go back and try again.

“BBQ mostly”
Reviewed 22 June 2013 via mobile

This is a BBQ place: but a very good one. If you eat outside you have a great view of the lake. The servers were ok and tried to please. A couple near us seemed like the type that are never pleased but by the size of them they must have been to many places; they complained to the waitress and the owner can out and offered them everything but a deed for the property. Even if their food wasn't to their liking, I was very impressed at the effort of the owner. Our food was very good as it was excellent BBQ.well worth if this is your type of food. Much better than the prior owners.
