Having stayed all over the US and Europe ,including Hawaii and twice in Paris, I can state w/ confidence the Grand Summit is a welcome gem right here in an very upscale suburban town in New Jersey, Summit NJ. The original site of this historic hotel dates back to 1868 ...Happy 145th Bday..and the hotel itself was built in 1929,so next year TGS will mark their 85th year as a hotel. I note these historic dates because I am amazed but not surprised @ the negativity expressed by totally unsophisticated " guests" who obviously would not recognize classic, original and grand architecture even if it fell upon them; such is the perspective of those whose purchase decisions are always motivated by cheapest price w/o ANY thought to value of personal service, amenities and ambiance of surroundings.
Upon entering the grand entry way one is reminded of the majestic Hotel Thayer on the campus of West Point; the staff is understated yet sincere in their welcome , just like the grand foyer replete w/enveloping leather chairs and sofas. One feels moneyed just walking in. Beds are one of 3 best I have ever slept upon while traveling; breakfast was well proportioned and varied.. it was nice to dine w/hotel guests who actually possessed table manners and kept children in their place. Only negative was no evidence of WSJ/NY Times/ Washington Post in the lobby. The oversized reading chairs and ottomans practically beg potential readers to sit for awhile with a timeless newspaper, eschewing the all too rapid and vacuous modern source of news.... the smartphone. Alas none of these great papers were available; surprising given the very close proximity to the financial capital of the world NYC. MIGHT THIS BE ADDRESSED?
True hospitality is a practiced art and Micheal Marino and his staff execute it flawlessly every one of the 5 times we have stayed here on business or pleasure. Value received relative to price paid is very favorable. also, all of quaint, affluent Summits amenities can be enjoyed on foot... the day passes to the gym, the NYC train, museums, downtown ...all a leisurely 6' walk away. This Grande Dame delivers every time.
