Having stayed all over the US and Europe ,including Hawaii and twice in Paris, I can state w/ confidence the Grand Summit is a welcome gem right here in an very upscale suburban town in New Jersey, Summit NJ. The original site of this historic hotel dates back to 1868 ...Happy 145th Bday..and the hotel itself was built in 1929,so next year TGS will mark their 85th year as a hotel. I note these historic dates because I am amazed but not surprised @ the negativity expressed by totally unsophisticated " guests" who obviously would not recognize classic, original and grand architecture even if it fell upon them; such is the perspective of those whose purchase decisions are always motivated by cheapest price w/o ANY thought to value of personal service, amenities and ambiance of surroundings.
Upon entering the grand entry way one is reminded of the majestic Hotel Thayer on the campus of West Point; the staff is understated yet sincere in their welcome , just like the grand foyer replete w/enveloping leather chairs and sofas. One feels moneyed just walking in. Beds are one of 3 best I have ever slept upon while traveling; breakfast was well proportioned and varied.. it was nice to dine w/hotel guests who actually possessed table manners and kept children in their place. Only negative was no evidence of WSJ/NY Times/ Washington Post in the lobby. The oversized reading chairs and ottomans practically beg potential readers to sit for awhile with a timeless newspaper, eschewing the all too rapid and vacuous modern source of news.... the smartphone. Alas none of these great papers were available; surprising given the very close proximity to the financial capital of the world NYC. MIGHT THIS BE ADDRESSED?
True hospitality is a practiced art and Micheal Marino and his staff execute it flawlessly every one of the 5 times we have stayed here on business or pleasure. Value received relative to price paid is very favorable. also, all of quaint, affluent Summits amenities can be enjoyed on foot... the day passes to the gym, the NYC train, museums, downtown ...all a leisurely 6' walk away. This Grande Dame delivers every time.

Room Tip: avoid room 238 this is over the AC unit (unknown to me when I booked it on kayak), I guess that is w...

I was looking forward to my stay at the hotel, because I enjoy historic properties. However, this hotel needs to be updated badly. Also, the staff was less than attentive.

I booked a deluxe room and was shocked by the size and the furnishings.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Dear demetgolf,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review of your recent stay with us. We were very disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy the hotel. We have a pretty diverse selection of rooms that include those that are more traditionally decorated, and those with more modern furnishings including hardwood floors and tumbled stone showers. It would have been our pleasure to introduce you to an alternate room style that may have met your expectations while you were staying at the property.

We are always working to improve our product, and I hope that you will reach out to me personally if I can introduce you to a different room style when your travels take you to our area again.

Sincerely,

You can not find a nicer, more friendly place!!! Very clean. Very comfortable. The staff is amazing. The restaurant and bar are fantastic. And the breakfast buffet is the best. We stay often because our daughter and her family live in Summit. Won't stay anywhere else!!!

Room Tip: I can't imagine that any of the rooms would not be great!

We returned to The Grand Summit a year on and once more could not fault it in anyway. The whole staff, led superbly by Michael and Nicole made us feel both welcome and valued.

Special mention must be made of the Hat Tavern staff, from breakfast through to late evening they were nothing short of excellent.

We were over from the UK for our Grandson's christening and our stay at the Grand Summit just added to our enjoyment.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights in July 2013 and found it be very nice. The outdoor pool was clean and refreshing, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was good. This hotel is located in a great little town with lots of shops and restaurants in the center. It's very close to NYC by both car and train, we took the train which left right out of Summit Center.

Room Tip: If staying in the summer, ask for a room near the pool or it's long walk from your room.

Just returned after a very pleasant trip to Summit, and New York City. The Grand Summit is in a pleasant time warp, with old fashioned value's of service the waiting staff in the Hat Bar are very friendly and hospitable serving an excellent range of breakfast choices.

The rooms are clean and comfortable with excellent shower facilities, the bed very comfortable. We were lucky on this occasion to have a suite, the smaller rooms could do with the facility of an arm chair, for avid readers
The complimentary Starbucks coffee in the lounge, all day and evening was very welcome, especially for guests there on business who have to treat the hotel as home for a while.
All round good location with easy access to the town and station, where the train to New York City takes about 40mins

Dear Teresa,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with a review of your stay with us. I love the title of your review as well. We work very hard to provide a comfortable experience for all of our guests, and when it is recognized we greatly appreciate it.

I was very pleased to hear you loved the facility as well as our address which we believe is one of the best in the country. I also appreciate you pointing out the proximity to Manhattan via the Summit Train Station. We are always promoting our hotel as an alternative to NY City hotels especially when considering the significant cost savings and many inclusions our hotel offers as part of our room rate.

We look forward to hosting you again when your travels take you back to the great town of Summit.

The Grand Summit planned the reception and brunch for a recent family wedding which we combined with a large reunion. The attention to detail in completing all facets of the planning for the reception and brunch was exemplary. The actual weekend was amazing with all of our wishes being not only met but exceeded. Family and friends were happy with their accommodations, the hotel provided breakfast which was exceptional, and with the services provided by all employees of the Grand Summit Hotel during their two or three day stays. The proximity to the train to NYC, the lovely town of Summit, as well as Newark Airport, was a definite plus. The ability to combine a wedding venue with a fun spot for a reunion was amazing.

Room Tip: Just ask at the front desk for whatever you are looking for in a room. I am confident that they will...
