“Excellent food, very reasonable prices, relaxing atmosphere”
Reviewed 28 November 2010

Quiet music, nicely decorated, this restaurant offers a wonderful excursion into a different culture. Food was excellent, not spicey unless you ask for it. Things must have changed since the 2009 reviews: portions were just fine. Deserts were also very good, both ice cream and pudding - different and tops. Restaurant was about half filled at night, and not at all noisy. Service a bit slow, but still: Highly recommended!

“Pricey, small portions, but only option for Afghan cuisine in area”
Reviewed 11 September 2009

Ate here for lunch, the lunch kabob at $8.95 is the size of what a kid's meal would be at other Afghan restaurants. Two chunks of lamb, two chunks of chicken, and a piece of onion, green pepper, and one cherry tomato. Never had vegetables on my kabob at an Afghan place before. They also do not have the delicious green yogurt-based chutney sauce that most Afghan places serve with their kabobs. The salad was doused in ranch-style dressing and was mostly iceberg lettuce. The lunch kabob came with a tiny piece of afghani barbari bread that was NOT freshly baked. One of the pieces of lamb was cooked well, the other piece was undercooked (red inside). The desserts were expensive ($6 for ice cream), and their regular menu prices were really high ($16 for a kabob dish).

Maybe I'm spoiled by all the great Afghan places in the D.C. area that serve heaping portions of rice, freshly baked bread from their own oven, great side dishes, and large skewers of perfectly seasoned kabob for $10, but Ariana did not impress me at all. It's pretty much the only option for kabob in South Jersey, so it will do in a pinch, but be prepared to pay a lot of $ for small portions. If I'm spending that kind of money there's many better places in the PA suburbs, if I'm in South Jersey I will just stick to the Indian restaurants when I want this type of food.

“Service... what service?”
Reviewed 3 July 2009

Agree with the other review posted here. My wife and I were the only customers for lunch, and the woman serving us did not make us feel welcome. She spent the entire time on her cell phone, while some guy sat in the back of the restaurant with a glum expression on his face.
When we paid, no 'thank you for coming'..

Food was ok, but not much different than the food served at area Indian restaurants, with more smiles!

“Interesting Food but Spotty Service”
Reviewed 15 June 2009

My husband and I were excited to see that Ariana opened a Voorhees, NJ location last fall, as we had had lunch at the Philadelphia location. Since then, we have been to Ariana several times. We enjoy the food, but the service definitely needs improvement.

Typical of Ariana....at our most recent visit, we came early and were the only people there. No water poured, no ice bucket offered for our wine, we had to ask for ice.....long gaps between the appetizers/salads/main dishes. The server did not appear to ask us about our entrees until we were 2/3 finished. Once she delivered the various courses, she was gone until the next course...too bad if you need a spoon or something else!

If you are looking for a restaurant with large portions (we are not), then don't go to Ariana. However, if you are looking for some very tasty and interesting food, then try this Afghanistan cuisine, and order it spicy, because Afghan spicy is not Indian burn-your-mouth spicy.

On our most recent visit we tried the chicken and fish kabobs and ordered the absolutely delicious dal as a side dish. Both the white and brown rice are very nice. On previous visits we have enjoyed everything else we have tried: Kabuli palow, norange palow, chicken corma, dal chalow, subzi chalow, gulpea chalow....All good with a variety of tastes and aromas. We also like the Aash-e-dal soup.

Decor is nice in this small restaurant. If only the service could pick up a bit!
