“Memorable setting.”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

My wife and I stayed here for three nights early in February 2014. The 60k or so from the main road along the potholed lane were quite challenging, but the camp itself was a revelation. Thatched bungalows in a quite stunning setting faced the river and the mountains. Accommodation was clean, slightly dated; service was good: we asked for the bedding to be changed, and the room safe was sorted quickly and without fuss. Meals were acceptable, and served with great charm. We did a couple of walks, one of which took us to the caves with their paintings. We actually spotted the elusive eland high on the tops. Plenty of baboons, too. It is a great centre for walking at various levels of challenge.

Room Tip: The bungalows on the outside facing the river and mountains are wonderfully situated.

Absolutely wonderful view from our chalet which faced Giants Castle Mountain. Chalet was rather dated but basically OK. Restaurant service and food were both fine.
Great place, remote location, good walking,

It does seem a long way to drive, and yes there are plenty of holes in the road. We were too early to check in so went off to walk to the caves to see the rock art. Its a longer walk than you think, esp in the heat and it was the first we'd seen. There's a guide who talks you through the pictures on site after you've walked up on your own. But it doesn't compare with Kamburg down the road, which is only walked with a guide and is quite a steep climb up but is definitely worth it. However the highlight was our thatched cottage - number 32 - with bbq and eating terrace outside and wonderful views of the countryside. It was stylish and contemporary in natural wood and totally in keeping with its environment. so quiet - so peaceful. we sat and watched the thunderstorm come in and marveled. the on site restaurant was a pleasant surprise with very good food.

Room Tip: pay extra for a room with a veiw - can recommend no 32 where we stayed.

What a location! Tranquil, scenic and many, many walks and hikes with various lengths and degrees of difficulty. The cottages, equipment are a bit dated and a bit tlc would make it a 5/5. Restaurant is good and the shop will provide you with basic food stuff. No fresh food. Stay are very helpful and friendly.m

The road to Giant's Castle Camp had many pot holes, some very big and deep. In the national park the road was much better.
The cabins we lived in (#28 and #38) were spacious, well equipped, very clean; #38 had a grand view of the mountain range.
We slept very well (in spite of the thin air - the camp is at 1740 m above sea level) and the only sounds we heard were the sounds of birds.
The restaurant was good, the service very good and we enjoyed the stay very much.
We do not hesitate to recommend this camp.

We stayed three nights in the camp and enjoyed a truly beautiful area, but were a little bit disappointed my the accommodation which could do with some investment. From time to time, the staff living close by played loud music which isn't really in keeping with the area, but it was quiet at night. Whilst the walks are beautiful, the walks could do with a little attention, for example, the grysbok bush walk should finish near some pools which can be swam in - genuine pity that the bridge one must cross shortly before the end of the walk has been washed away.

My husband and I have just spent 5 nights at Giant's Castle, it is our 5th visit and definitely one of our favourite Drakensberg spots!
We stayed in Chalet nr 16 and found the accomadation very clean with a well equipped kitchen. My husband is a photographer and we spent 2 wonderful mornings in the Vulture Hide, we also found all the staff very friendly and helpful.
Thank you again,
Craig and Caroline Kerr (Pretoria, Gauteng)
