We have just spent the most awesome weekend at Giants Castle with a group of friends. The staff are an amazing bunch, we had a problem with having no water on Friday evening, we phoned the number listed and within a few minutes, had a delightful lady by the name of Khanyo who came to our chalet and told us they were working on the problem and that it would be sorted out shortly, which it was, they left a large container filled with water in case we needed it. The staff were all friendly and most proficient. Our chalet had a magnificent view of the mountain and was clean and very cosy after lighting our fires. Although the units are self catering, breakfast is included in the rate and it was more than adequate. The walks are not too strenuous and the views all round are magnificent. Unfortunately the road is full of potholes and one has to take is real slow but we discovered a better route on the way home which although had potholes wasn't as bad as the one from Escourt. For a first timer contemplating on whether to go or not, do yourself a favour and go, you won't be sorry. We will certainly be returning to Giants in the near future.

I would have given 5 stars if the road wasn't in such a terrible state. Watch out for the potholes!
Make sure you have enough time to do some hiking, there are a couple of beautiful routes. We did one of the shorter routes and saw quite a lot of game while we walked.

South Africa got beauty, winter experience at the Berg was a delight. Other than winter snow, expected very little from Giant Castle reserve. Didn't even know it was a 30,000 plus hectares big. Chalets are spacious & well furnished, with shower/bath, lounge area, fireplace & kitchen appliances. Scenic views overlooking mountain range are splendid. Especially enjoyed many picnic spots along the river cutting across the resort. Overnight hiking trails & day time walks are refreshing. Historic san people curves have some superb art work, and worth a walk up the mountain with plenty bird species & plants along the way, with a bit of luck spotted some wildlife. If not fancy own cooking , in house Izimbali restaurant & bar offers good affordable meals, in a warm & relaxed atmosphere (fresh trout is a must try). There is light touch decor of the original botanical paintings across the lounge, historic & nice. Also find necessities from in house store, which may help with basic food stuffs. Staff are very friendly & helpful. Well run establishment. This really is a gem of location in the central Berg.

Few tips:

-Road from highway to resort is tarred but potholed, longer than expected drive, day time driving good option.
-Resort expectedly remote, nearest little town is Escort, best to buy all necessary to avoid the drive
-Weather bit unpredictable, windy at times but was generally good
-Pack up different phone sims, network can be problematic,
-All chalets have good views, preferred the mountain huts overlooking the valley best

We stayed in Chalet 30 which has the most divine view of the valley and the mountains. The accommodation was simple whilst clean and neat and not overly priced. Food in the restaurant was wholesome and tasty. The hike to World's View is a must it simply takes your breath away in more than one sense. What a delight - a true South African gem!

Room Tip: Ask for chalet 30!!!!!

We took a scenic drive to Giants Castle Resort this morning and we were really glad we did.
Only about 30 odd Kms from White Mountain Lodge, the drive was spectacular.
The majestic Drakensburg Mountains host Giants Castle Resort which offers so much to tourists and locals. Hiking, fishing, scenic walks, mountain climbing, etc make it a fun family place to be.
Although we never stayed there, our first impressions rated the environment 10 out of 10.
We stayed for lunch and tea and enjoyed good food, excellent, friendly service an amazing view and found ourselves surrounded by many other happy visitors.
Looking at their tariffs we were pleasantly surprised.
We found it so enjoyable, we have planned a family trip already.

Room Tip: All their chalets, small lodges have awesome views of the mountains around and about
