“Gorgeous!”

We loved our really quite luxurious cottage and wished we could have stayed longer--two days wasn't enough. We forgot that there was no restaurant until we were too far from the nearest town, so we made some interesting meals with the not very impressive selection of food found in the store on-site. The view and wildlife were fantastic. The advice about hiking was less than superb as we ended up driving 3 hours each way one day to hike Mount-Aux-Sources because we were told it would take 1 1/2 hours to drive there and couldn't really find much information (our Drakensberg hiking guide that we had was terrible) about hiking there from the trail near the campground.

Room Tip: We were told that the Upper Camp was more scenic, but as it was full we stayed at the Lower Camp, wh...

The biggest draw here are the views from the chalets. Even if you aren't much of a hiker its a great place to be -the bird life is varied and quite prolific, and the scenery is just fantastic. The play of light across the Amphitheatre changes all the time and the stars at night are just so clear. The 2 routes for hiking that I went on were clearly marked and the little maps from the shop are worth investing in for the specifics of each route plus the additional information. The shop itself has a reasonable selection of very basic items, that aren't exorbitantly priced, but it is best to come self contained. There is plenty of firewood and charcoal. The staff were friendly and helpful. The chalet that I stayed in was very spacious, just looking a bit tired. It was great having the indoor fireplace to warm the interior in the evenings, but there is also an electric heater. I had a chalet in Upper Thendele (No 21) which was fine, (the views are not blocked) but if you wanted to have something that wasn't looking out over another chalet it would be better to have one from the front row. There is a warning about the baboons, and I did have a rather scary close encounter on my hike, but otherwise, they can be heard around the chalets.

We loved being in Thendele. the place is unbeleivable. The view is breathtaking and the oportunity to walk around the camp in so many beatufiul places was amazing.
The room itself is nice, the bathroom not that great. The area around the rooms, wtih the green grass, flowers, trees and amazing views is fantastic. You dont really need to fo far, simply sit in the balcony and look 360 degrees around you. beautiful.
Its very important to bring food there with you, as there's very little food to buy in the camp's shop and no restaurants in the camp.

Room Tip: It might be prefered to pay few more dollars and stay in the upper camp.

We stayed in the upper camp for 4 nigts. What a view! The landscape is truly stunning and so many great walks at your door. The view from Policemen's Helmet back to the huts is great for a lunch time spot. The huts are fairly spacious for 2 people and are cleaned every day.

We found the reception shop had a reasonable range of food and supplies (as good as the shop we stopped in at Harrismith). Had trouble finding a store that sold matches or a lighter for our fire wood.

What an amazing place! This is the best place to stay in the northern Drakensberg - stunning views, right next to the Amphitheatre! The views are truly breathtaking, and its a perfect base if you want to go hiking to Tugela Falls gorge. You just walk straight out the door and your on your way. We had a hut on the lower level with a cosy fire place inside and nice braai area outside. The huts are a bit worn down, but with that location - who cares. Watch out for baboons.

Stayed two nights - excellent cottage and truly amazing views. we had a front line cottage - superb. The Tugela Gorge walk is one of the main reasons for visiting. The chain ladders are not for the fainthearted!

Room Tip: we had cottage 17 - front line view.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the self catering Thendele camp. The accommodations are great and cleaned every day. We ended up with a two bedroom which is quite large with a large kitchen, dining area, living room and fire place. We had a stunning view from deck and braai area. Limited supplies are available in the Thendele gift shop, but more down at the main reception. We rolled in after hours and our key was waiting for us with no hassle. I haven't been to a better spot in the 'berg with so much great hiking all around. Some of the trails start either from Mahai camp or at the parking area below the camp so we would take the short drive in the morning. Book early though because it is hard to get a reservation during SA holidays. Can't wait to go back!
