Thendele's location is fantastic, and it's main advantage. We didn't stay in one of the more secluded huts but still had the feeling of privacy with breathtaking views from some of our windows and from our porch and braai area.
In spite of the warnings in other reviews, we encountered not one baboon which was both a relief and a bit of a disappointment!
The huts are basically designed but well equipped and they are quite aesthetically set up.
Parts of the hut and some of the equipment are a bit run down. We had to ask for a replacement for a frying pan when we discovered bits of Teflon in our scrambled eggs. Also, in our hut (no.3, lower), the cutlery drawer had a strong smell of mold which didn't come off after washing the cutlery, and was off-putting. In the bathroom there are holes in the walls where something (a shelf or hook) was once attached.
The up side is that when possible, and when we asked for attention, things were dealt with quickly.
Our hut was serviced every day by a super friendly cleaning woman. On the other hand, the attitude at the office/shop was not friendly - at most - "correct". We asked the office staff (rangers?) for hike recommendations, and were shown a pamphlet as an answer. Although we told them that we are with youngish kids, and that we were going to the Gorge, there was no extra info on hiking times or any tips at all of any kind. We left for the Gorge (a 5 hour hike) at 11:00 am, leaving the office around that time, not knowing that the hiking times given on the pamphlet were for good, pretty fast walkers, so that before getting to the Gorge we realized that time was short and darkness may fall before we get back. As a result of this, plus the lack of info at the office, we missed the actual gorge. We didn't know that in order to get to the end of the trail, one must climb up the rope ladder and continue for another 20 minutes or so. In retrospect, it would have been so easy for the office staff to point out that a. it was getting a bit late to embark on that specific walk with kids and b. we should make sure to climb those steps, otherwise we'll miss the point!
The shop is good for your daily milk and bread. ALL other food must be brought with and as other reviewers have said, also paper, matches, soap, shampoos etc. Dish washing utensils and soap are provided.
Bottom line - in spite of the above disadvantages, we had a great time at Thendele and would definitely return there..
