“Beautiful setting, attentive hosts”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

There surely isn't available a superlative that previous contributors haven't used in describing their experiences at The Garden House. So no apologies for more of the same:
Our quintessential hostess, Annette, sought tirelessly to ensure that we enjoyed ourselves and missed out on nothing.
We left it until a mere three months before our arrival to attempt to make reservations at Le Quartier Francais and could only make the waiting list. No problem, however, when Annette is batting for your side, and we had a most entertaining and extravagant "Tasting" evening at surely the finest eaterie in Franschhoek. La Motte was almost the equal!
Annette and Barry are charming, loveable and entertaining hosts, and the accommodation is of a very high standard in a beautiful setting. We were quite apprehensive of taking the Music Quiz on our last morning, but acquitted ourselves fairly well - perhaps inspired by Barry's piano accompaniment!!
Thank you both - we do hope to have the pleasure again soon.

This is a private cottage in the garden of a beautiful Victorian home with a lovely garden full of roses. Spacious, comfortable, air-conditioned, stylish and immaculately clean. A delicious breakfast is served on the veranda overlooking the garden and pool, with a magnificent view of the Franschhoek Hills behind. One can walk into the village within 5 minutes, along a pretty road of elegant period homes. The owners are kind, welcoming and knowledgeable and can generally help to make sure you secure often prized reservations at the notable local restaurants and vineyards. Our stay could not have been more enjoyable or hospitable. This is in fact the 4th time we have stayed here and we will certainly be doing so again. This is one of the best guest houses I have ever come across , anywhere in the world. And I do not give compliments lightly!

What's not to like? The charm of your hosts, human (the wonderful Annette and Barry), canine (Benjy and Lizzie) and feline ( Marmaduke, Charlie and Tonto) is reason enough to come, let alone the wonderful cottage that is all yours, the vast bathroom, the expansive views of the Franschhoek valleys, the beauty of the white roses and blue agapanthus in the garden, the sparkling pool, the local smoked trout for breakfast, a crisp Franschhoek Sauvignon on the terrace at sundown....you get the picture. Western Cape first timers beware, you need to make your restaurant reservations several weeks ahead, but chutzpah is Annette's middle name, so if anyone can shoehorn you into a restaurant...or at least make sure they give you the table with the valley panorama not the view of the kitchen/toilets it is she. Now just get on and book. 300+ tripadvisor contributors can't be wrong.

We had a lovely time staying for a few days in Mid December. Franschoek is a lovely base to explore the surrounding countryside from. Annette and Barry were great hosts, very friendly and helpful. Annette eve came to pick us up when we got a puncture on one of the bikes. Really beautiful garden and the cats and dogs were cute too.

After two years we were able to come back to the Garden House again. As with every second visit there is always that feeling: “will it be that great again or is it somewhat disappointing this time?”

We can certainly tell that our second stay was as great, and if possible, even better than our first time! The lovely room, beautiful surroundings, world class garden, the adorable dogs and cats, the perfect hosts and one of the best breakfasts in the world! Annette was able to help us (again) with reservations for the best restaurants in town! The location is perfect, in a quite area of Franschoek, but close and safe enough to walk to all the restaurants in town. Pretty convenient in the Wine-area!!

After telling some great news from our side, Annette immediately opened up a bottle of bubbles! We fell in love again with the dogs Benji and Lizzy and were even allowed to take them for a stroll around the town and felt the experience of being a citizen of Franschoek!
It was indescribable again and if there is an opportunity for a third visit we know for certain were to sleep in Franschoek!

My wife and I stayed here in early 2012. Given its already high tripadvisor rating you can't really call it a hidden gem but it was one of the highlights of our Cape Town / garden route tour. We stayed in the small room in the house as we booked fairly late. Room very comfortable size so would not be put off by this as an option. In summary a beautiful secluded spot (but only a short walk from centre of town), top notch hospitality - great breakfast / local eating and drinking tips and overall excellent value for money vs hotel alternatives
