This hotel has rooms on two floors built around a central courtyard containing a small swimming pool. It is within easy walking distance of most shops and restaurants with the Huguenout memorial a little further on. We stayed two nights. Our room faced into the courtyard and got some noise from people around the pool, but nights were quiet. Rooms are of a good size with two large comfortable single beds and plenty of pillows. The en suite bathroom was large with bath and shower. The breakfast was hot and cold buffet style with an adequate range of choices, but not as good as Protea Knysna Quays, and some things ran and and were only replaced slowly. We did not eat evening meals in the hotel. The hotel was clean and staff were friendly, courteous and helpful.

We found the hotel to be very welcoming and the service excellent. The room was very comfortable, the facilities (bar, pool & pool area, dining room) more than adequate, and the location if you wish to explore Franschhoek and its environs to be ideal. Good value for money in a lovely part of the world.

We arrived in S.A and spent our first night there. We arrived very early and were offered breakfast whilst they fast tracked our room. Staff were so helpful and produced a lovely celebration at breakfast for my Husbands birthday. Also helped me plan the rest of the day. Great location to visit wine area especially being able to walk into Franschhoek easily.

Room Tip: Had upstairs room great view of mountains

Good value hotel compared to local competition. Does all of the basics well. The only disappointment is breakfast - unless you are a fan of flies landing on the food and very tired looking hot buffet options (although presumably the hot buffet items may just about be OK when they are fresh from the kitchen).

Clean rooms with nice views up to the mountains, and a pleasant courtyard with pool. Ask for a courtyard room as the road side (which only has a few rooms) can be quite noisy from traffic and - on a bad night - the Station pub.

Best point is the location - it is so easy to walk to any of the fantastic restaurants and cafés in Franschhoek as well as a few of the closer wineries. With so many highly rated restaurants on the doorstep, it is no surprise that Protea does not put much effort into its own food at this hotel and I cannot believe that many people would choose the in-house restaurant in preference to the outside options.

Franschhoek itself.is a little slice of heaven, and the Protea Franschhoek offers an excellent option for exploring the town.

Room Tip: Courtyard room - upper floor better to ground level as a little lighter

I stayed at the Protea with my wife for a birthday long weekend in Franschhoek, and found it perfect for our needs.
Many of the hotels & B+Bs in this area are very expensive, due to the regular flow thru of US and European tourists- for around 70usd per night, this is an excellent value for money option. Travelling to this area is all about the food & the wine available, so there really is no need for a topend restaurant on the premises.
The location is right in the middle of the town, so all the main restuarants & shops are easily available & 10 minutes in a hire car takes you to any of the main vineyards.
Friendly staff, decent buffet breakfast ( tho that's a little pricey ), nice clean pool in the centre courtyard.
Strongly recommend.

Room Tip: would go with a higher floor room.
