This hotel is in a great location and fab base to set your travels from, the rooms are a nice size and overlook the pool area. One letdown is the poor kowledge of the procard and its food discounts, we did not eat here as i could not figure out what the procard offered.
Overall a lovely hotel, could do with a bit more of a modern twist if they refurb.

Room Tip: Room 28 was nice and away from the road.

The Protea at Franschoek is an ideal place to stay if you want to visit the historic area of the winelands of South Africa. Situated at the top end of the main street it is ideal for visiting the numerous restaurants for which the town is famous. The Hugenot history is commemorated at the memorial and musuem in the town and you must visit them. For a few days in the winelands the Protea is ideal, the rooms overlook the swimming pool and garden, and the atmosphere is old world and tranquil.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are probably better though you have to climb stairs from reception but not from ca...

This lovely hotel is far more intimate than most. The rooms are configured in a square (minus one side) on two floors with the swimming pool and grounds in the centre. The rooms are spacious, clean & with nice linens. The bathroom was large & had a separate tub. The buffet hot & cold was delicious. This hotel is close enough to town that walking everywhere is easy.

We really wanted to escape the hustle-bustle of New Years eve with our young children, so as a last minute option, we were able to secure the last room at this hotel.

Booking
I was getting different room profiles from an aggregator website, when compared to the hotel's direct website, so I decided to call the hotel directly (rather than go through the Protea central reservations desk). This turned out to be a smart call, as the operator was extremely helpful and accommodating, and we were able to book the room.

Check-in
Check-in was a breeze. We arrived at about 3pm on 31 December, and proceeded through the check-in process quickly. No waiting, no mucking around at the front desk, nothing was too much trouble. When we got to the room, it was already configured with a rollaway bed and a portable cot. This is unusual these days. Most hotels only do this after check-in which can be a bit annoying as it takes up more of your precious time.

Room
The room was pretty generous in size, and had everything we needed. There was still room to move about freely, even with the extra beds, there was a decent sized bathroom (with space for toiletries), as well as a fridge, a tv with a few pay-tv channels, and in-room wi-fi. Everything was clean, although a little bit dated.

Amenities / Activities
The only facility we really used was the pool, which provided for a refreshing dip on a warm (ok, make that boiling hot day). Towels were brought to us immediately, and we did not have to compete for real estate (the hotel only has a couple of dozen rooms, making it feel rather intimate).

Food
We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was buffet style. There was a reasonable selection for the room price (included) and the staff were fairly attentive, even though the hotel was full. I can't comment on the quality of the restaurant.

Location
The hotel is centrally located within Franschhoek town, offering walking access to a multitude of restaurants and shops.

Overall
I have already recommended this hotel to others, and wouldn't think twice about staying again. We really felt like guests as opposed to being on a tourist conveyer. All the country comfort requirements for a young family were well covered.

This is a good hotel that is well placed in Franschhoek. It is very much in the centre of the tourist area thus making it easy to walk to all the main attractions. The rooms are clean, spacious and well maintained and the buffet style breakfast is good. The pool is a decent size although it has little protection from the wind which can really blow in this part of the world. Great for up to 2 nights but you would not want to spend any great length of time here.

Room Tip: Font facing rooms are noisy due to the traffic - ask for a room on the side or at the back.

The Franschhoek Protea is pleasant enough but over-rated. I had a small room on the front of the hotel with furniture that just got in the way. The street was noisy and there was no sound insulation in the windows. Breakfast was OK although the staff were annoyingly keen to clear plates, glasses, cups, cutlery and anything else you weren't clutching tightly! On arrival, I found Check-In just rude. The staff appeared young, inexperienced and very noisy later in the evening. I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: Avoid the low numbers on the front of the hotel.

The main selling point of this hotel is the ideal location. With beautiful views of the mountains from the pool area, and at the quiet end of the main street, you couldn't get a better location.
The rooms are a good size but could do with a thorough clean, especially the bathrooms. The beds were large and comfortable with everything you need for a 3 night stay.
The staff were friendly enough, but there is not many of them, and they all seem to do everything. Our rooms were not ready when we arrived, even though it was after our allocated check in time, but we were able to leave our luggage in reception and head out for a walk on the advice of the receptionist.
Breakfast was the main downside of the hotel. The choice was limited for a buffett, and they were very slow to refill things that had run out. Having to ask for coffee 5 times is not what I would expect from a hotel like this.
The town is beautiful and well worth a visit, and if you are looking for an ideal location to sleep in, and are going to spend most of your time exploring then I would recommend this hotel.
