This is a real journey. We had read mixed reviews, but if you don't approach this dining experience with an open mind then it is not for you. It is like a SA take on a Heston Blumenthal menu, all designed to take you on a gastronomical encounter of the local culture and terrain. Highly recommended, especially with the pound to rand exchange rate bringing the 8-course tasting menu with wine pairing in at about £75.

We had a wonderful meal at this restaurant paired with delicious wines. The appetizer really stood out. It was some kind of pepper that had the texture of cotton candy. There was also some kind of volcano dessert. Outstanding in every way food and service!

This is truly a new eating experience - and one that weaves in molecular gastronomy with a traditional tasting menu.

One course was a deconstructed take on chips; bread comes baked in a tin can. I don't want to spoil the experience, but everything about it was fun, fantastically full of flavor, with well-paired wines and excellent service.

It also feels like you get way more courses than the ones offered.

We had dinner at the Tasting Room in June and it wowed us beyond expectations. The ambiance, preparation, presentation and flavors were top notch. Each of the wines paired with the dishes were outstanding and the sommelier was very knowledgeable about the wines. It was obvious a great deal of thought had gone into making the dining experience a fantastic event.

We were pleased to have recently had the opportunity to sample the tasting menu at The Tasting Room while staying in Franschhoek. It is certainly a different experience to al a carte dining, and the emphasis is on subtle flavours, unusual combinations and visual presentation.
You are offered a choice of either a 5-course or an 8-course tasting menu, with each course paired with a specific wine (by the glass). The presentation, the explanation of each dish by the waiters, and the flavours did not disappoint. It was also interesting to be able to sample a variety of local wines during the course of the meal.
The restaurant furnishing is minimal and contemporary. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. And, with the current weakness of the Rand exchange rates, the cost is relatively inexpensive by international standards (in Australia a similar meal in such an establishment would easily be 50-75% more expensive).
If you are looking for more typical restaurant fare, there are any number of other options in and around Franschhoek. But if you are looking for a special food experience, this is the place.
