“Overall a most enjoyable and memorable stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 December 2011

Hi everyone, just to let you know if you ever need a tranquil "get-away" from city husstle & bustle, Cathbert Country Inn just on the outskirts of Franschhoek is the place to stay. Beautiful surrounds, pristine bathrooms and immaculate bedrooms. The living room & kitchenette lends itself to absolute relaxation. A scrumptous breakfast (hot/cold) is served at the poolside and once again one experiences a feeling of typical country relaxation yet maintaining privacy if you choose. Overall a most enjoyable and memorable stay. I certainly would highly recommend Cathbert.

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at the Cathbert Country Inn this past weekend, we attended a wedding 3km away so it was ideal as we did not want the hassle of driving back to Tokai (Cape Town) which was more than an hour away. The setting was so peaceful and beautiful, although we knew they were fully booked, we had absolute privacy, the rooms were immaculate and extremely comfortable. We enjoyed a lovely country breakfast on the Sunday morning at the pool and every need was catered for, even the morning papers!
Best regards,
Tanya & Kevin

I spent just two nights but it was so relaxing and beaitufl that i wish i had stayed more. They took care of picking us from the airport, organizing a wine tasting tour and recommending the best restaurants of the area!

We stayed here for 3 nights in early October, following a recommendation by a friend. We could not have asked for more. The location and views are stunning and our stay was really made by the service and warm welcome we had from the management and staff.

Highly recommend dinner, the food was amongst some of the best we had during our trip to South Africa. The breakfast was just as good with a huge selection to choose from.

We had several recommendations to visit wineries and restaurants in the nearby area from Aubrey and all of which were fantastic.

We will definitely recommend Cathbert to friends and family and look forward to returning!

We booked the Cathbert Country Inn based on all those good reviews which we read on Tripadvisor. We knew that the accomodation is not right within Franschhoek but we haven't expected to travel 19km on the main road and then another 3km on the property itself.
Therefore we were a little bit disappointed as we found out that we are alomst closer to Stellenbosch than Franschhoek.
Anyways, the surrounding of the guesthouse is beautiful. You have a very good view across the Vrede en Lust vineyard and the main guesthouse (where the restaurant is located) is absolutley nice (Decoration very neat). Also the breakfast we enjoyed was very good - hot and cold breakfast available, excellent selection on food.

We have booked the luxory room and to be honest, were not really satisfied. We spent almost 200 per night and the rooms did not at all correspond to those we have seen on the pictures in the internet. Maybe we should have booked the suites or whatever but our room was definately not worth for what we have paid. The bathroom was "old school style" and the furniture in our room was not "retro style" but simply used up.
We are truly sorry that we have to give away this rating but we really didn't feel like our visit was worth the money.

Cathbert, Manager at Angala Boutique Hotel and Guest House, responded to this review, 29 November 2011
Dear Mr/Ms,

We value the time you took to convey your impression of Cathbert Country Inn and we thank you for the positive and negative points that you have highlighted. On the negative points we would like to share our thoughts...

As you pointed out, you knew that our property was not in the middle of Franschhoek. All our descriptions & photo’s (on all internet booking sites) explains that we are situated on a farm; a retreat away from the busy crowds (at the foot of the Simonsberg); this is one of the main reasons people like to stay at Cathbert and not at a busy hotel in the centre of Franschhoek.

You booked and stayed in our entry level (luxury, but cheapest) rooms; equipped with classical yellowwood & stinkwood furniture, with fresh bathrooms. These rooms cannot be compared to our upgraded luxury suites with beautiful views, and there is an obvious R610 difference in price.

We apologize for the fact that your expectations were not met; but if you had brought this to our attention at check in, we would have gone out of our way to try to accommodate your needs and to make some adjustments.

Wishing you a lovely day,
The Cathbert Family & Management

Exceptional welcome and service in luxurious and beautiful surrounds. The 2 km drive up the mountain through the Vineyard takes you to this most tranquil and stunning of havens. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, recommendations made were simply first class; we did not want for anything in out three day stay. The catering throughout was first class, dinner is simply a MUST. We would recommend this place to our friends and family and will return here in the future.

We stayed one night but would have lived tostay longer. After a long winding drive through the vrede en lust estate you have an amazing view from cathbert. Westayed in the luxury suite and despite their being many good restauraunt choices in nearby franschoek, we stayed and we were so glad we did. The dinner was unforgettable and then being able to stroll back to the room made it all the more enjoyable. Aubry was a faultless host throughout our stay and we look forward to coming back again. The only exception was that the pool wasn't cleaned and had lots of foliage in it, but it was only a minor detraction, in oct I don't expect they thought anyone was brave enough to swim!!
