I haven't stayed for the night but I definitely have to thank Mark for his travel tips - that got to be the base of my travel plans for the next 2 (lovely) weeks along the coast eastwards.

Otters Bend Lodge in Franschoek was one of the most awesome places I have stayed while travelling. The hosts were friendly, hands-on and involved. Never a dull moment was had and to be honest, if we could, we would simply keep going back. Thanks so much guys for an amazing stay with you! - Jayme & Mack

I have reviewed Otter's Bend some years ago and loved this place now as I did then. (mysteriously my review never seemed to stay on this site but the strange negative reviews from 2009 have remained... why is this???? ) I travel professionally and stay in enough hotels and guest houses around the world to know what really matters to me... and there are some things that simply cannot be bought from a designer or furnishing showroom ... and for me the spirit and quality of a place is not measured by it's fittings or however luxurious it sets out to be .. nor it's pretentions to attract the wealthy!

First you must understand that Otter's Bend is a backpackers - but with a twist. It is equally suitable for families or travellors - Mark and Mary and their family are great hosts - fun and welcoming, the facilitlies are rustic but charming and completely adequate. The rooms are small with some space challenges but perfectly manageable. Be clear, this is not a 5* Guest House and it does not pretend to be... it is for any of you who want a delightful stay in the trees on the bacnks of a river in the middle of an orchard, with the owner's horses, dogs, cats around, unbelievable scenery ... and all in the middle of one of South Africa's most sought-after and beautiful tourist destinations... for a bargain price!!! More than that, mark is a power house of local and environmental knowledge - he will take you on a mini-safari in one of the US made safari trucks - or you can go for a horse trap ride - or walk the amazing Franschoek mountains with his expert advice.... this is a place to go and stay and take time... don't rush in and out. If you are not expecting the usual (let's be honest, boring) superficial bling of most guesthouses or hotels and are looking for something different, come here. No good wingeing if things are not like your favourrite 4* hotel... it's not what you come for!! this is like being in the sticks but in the middle of the winelands and it's awesome! Try it.

Room Tip: just ask the family proprieters

The back packers lodge is perfectly located to explore the beautiful surroundings. We arrived very late in the evening and the owners/managers made the necessary arrangements for us to find the keys. The location is in nature and away from the hustle and bustle of Franschhoek, but still near enough the town to enjoy everything Franschhoek and surroundings have to offer.

The room was really small, literally the bed and a small space around it to walk around, and the bathroom was stupidly small - you couldn't open the door because the sink was in the way so you had to squeeze your way around (luckily we were both slim enough for this!)
The water hot water tank exploded in the night and we had no hot water for a shower the next day, although this could happen anywhere I suppose. Then during the next night we didn't have any cold water but this was 'turned on' again by the morning. When i mentioned this to the owners they didn't offer an apology although they were very sorry about the exploding water tank.
The owners were helpful enough but not really around much to offer help and advise. The location was pleasant by the river although this didn't smell great as clearly contains run off from the town and sprays used on nearby wineyards. its walking distance from the town (about 10 minutes). The plunge pool is very very cold which I suppose is OK on a really really hot day but otherwise a bit pointless. It is a backpackers so I suppose you shouldn't expect luxury but I don't believe its very good value.

Otter’s Bend was the singularly worst place I have ever stayed in my life. We arrived late for an overnight stay to find our room dirty – the dustbin overflowing with someone else’s rubbish, the bed unmade and stinky, the bathroom uncleaned and the towels dirty.
Of course we were totally unprepared, there was no one around to help us with clean linen as it was very late at night, and we were too exhausted to drive back to Cape Town. It was horrible.
I contacted the owner who offered us a refund, but after several emails he never actually made good on his offer.
Yes, a beautiful site, but unfortunately marred for us and we would never recommend Otter’s Bend.
