“Excellent value in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

My wife and I stayed here for four nights (bed and breakfast), a couple of kilometres outside Franschhoek, and used it as a base for wine-tasting in the region.

The guest houses in South Africa are very good value and this one is no exception. The room was very reasonably priced (800 Rand a night for the two of us), spacious, well appointed and also had good aircon, which in summer was really necessary. Shani, the Manager, gave us excellent advice and help finding restaurants, giving directions and booking tickets; she steered us away from the tourist traps too.

As for the setting? Franschhoek (and the guest house) have some spectacular views.

Stunning all-round. I would go there again in a heartbeat.

We were recomended to Basse Provence and I'm so glad or we may have missed it! Set in the most beautiful country location, attached to a wonderful vineyard (Rickety Bridge) and in very close proximity to the bustling town of Franshoek.

The room was very big with a lovely huge bathroom, set in it's own little cottage next to the main house. All the amenities of a big hotel, with the feel of "staying with friends". One of my favourite touches was a little jug of fresh milk for tea and coffee, not those awful sachet things!!

It was also a fabulous breakfast menu with choice from omlette to full english - all cooked fresh on request.

The team at the B&B were all wonderful and friendly whilst still being discreet - a difficult combination to achieve.

We would highly recommend Basse Provence to anyone wanting to stay in Franshoek - it was a delight!

Room Tip: Request a room in the cottage for extra privacy and quick access to the pool.

My husband and I spent many months searching for the perfect combination of value, luxury and relaxation when finding our accommodations. We weren't disappointed with Basse Provence. In addition to the great room with all the extras, the staff was amazing, making arrangements for us prior to arriving, as well as when we were there. They were more than happy to help with anything and were always smiling. The breakfasts were phenomenal in a sunlit, welcoming room. They started with yogurt, fruit, and granola, and then moved onto eggs and sausages. We also loved that its walkable to Rickety Bridge Winery where there's a restaurant and some good wines. We'd definitely stay here when we return to Franschhoek!

We attended the Franschhoek Champagne Festival this weekend and stayed at Basse Provence. The staff and management were extremely friendly, the breakfast was excellent and the old school feel of the place made us feel right at home. We stayed in the beautiful Gideon Suite and everything was clean and presentable, with airconditioning and everything else we would have expected. The grounds are spectacular and if we had more time we definitely would have spent it at the pool. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Franschhoek.

Room Tip: I believe all the rooms will be phenomenal :-)

We stayed in the Jacob suite, upstairs, located in a beautiful Cape Dutch building which was apparently built in the 1800's. The suite was very roomy and thus a nice size and nicely decorated. The person at reception was very welcoming and had a lot of suggestions on where to eat. The place is about 2 or 3 km from Franschoek. The problem with the Jacob suite, was the entrance door into the suite and the toilet door were very low, about 1,65 meters. And even though there were signs warning you, at night, you generally forgot, so a few head bumps – not ideal at all. Also the road noise was pretty bad, you could hear every car passing by, and so for a quiet get away, it is not really the place! The vineyards around were not as neat and well kept, as others in the area.

Room Tip: If you above about 1,65 meters tall would not recommend the Jacob suite at all.

We were 2 elderly couples who stayed at Elisabeth suite and Jacob's suite in November 2011.
Though we came very early, at 10 a.m. we were heartly welcomed and allowed to occupy one of the rooms with all of our luggage. We could make ourselves a cup of coffee and enjoy the sun in the adjecent garden with a nice little pool reserved only this little cottage. We really enjoyed this coming from Cape Town. Shany was most helpful and the staff also much so. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. It is a bit outside the town but with a car this is not a problem. The rooms were big and clean, and we enjoyed the bath tub in the room allowing us to chat during the bath. The breakfast was up to its best.
We really loved Franschouk especially the beautiful restaurant at Dieu Donné (the surroundings are stunning) and the gourmet restaurants, most of all Le Bon Vivant.
We will certainly return to Basse provence if we ever return to this part of South Africa and will highly recommend the place.

We recently went for a getaway to Franschoek for a 2 night stay at the Basse Provence Guesthouse. We stayed in the Paulina suite and the room size was very nice. The bathroom was also a nice size but could have had a makeover as it was a bit dated. We had 2 problems with the place, firstly the road traffic noise which was very audible from our bed ( we couldn't believe how many cars went up and down the road all through the night) and then the second really funny thing was that we could hear the room above us go and pee as the floorboards/ceiling clearly had no insulation. We had a very enjoyable breakfast both mornings and the food was good quality and tasty. The place doesn't have their own restaurant for lunch or dinner so you have to go out for that. The town center and wine farms are very close ( by car) so it wasn't too much of a problem. We wouldn't recommend this place as it unfortunately doesn't lend itself to a QUIET getaway in the country which is what we thought we were going to have.
