“Hike in tis nature reserve in Spring and see a unique selection of wild flowers”
Reviewed 14 April 2013

The hike over the mountain starting from Kogelberg Nature Reserve to the Harold Porter Nature reserve is one of the most enjoyable hikes which I have experienced in the Cape mountains. It is not too difficult and one sees beautiful mountain views and the most unusual and unique wild flowers along the route.

“Wonderfull experience,exquisite reserve”
Reviewed 2 April 2013

First of all I want to correct Tripadvisor on their location for this reserve: It is situated in the heart of the Cape Floral Region, the Overberg, and is run by Cape Nature, and not even close to Franschhoek. So the map that you provide gives the complete wrong location. Perhaps that can now be corrected.
We stayed in the Oudebosch Camp which consists only of five self-catering cabins with breath-taking views of the resort. The stilted, glass fronted cabins consist of two bedrooms, two bathrms and spacious kitchen, lounge and dining area. You just feel completely part of nature because the whole design blend in with the pristine surroundings. The toilet facility is an experience in it's own, in keeping with the "green" and sustainable nature of the development. There are fantastic day trails and even when you just want to sit around, relax, watch the ample birdlife, have a barbeque and do stargazing,it is still a wonderfull experience. Oh yes, there is also a eco-pool without any harmful chemicals, for when it is hot and it was when we visited. But I think it must be very cold in Winter in these majestic mountains.

“Crystal Pools Hike - Steenbras”
Reviewed 11 December 2012

We did this hike shortly after the reopening in november 2012 - it was closed for more than a year to give the nature a chance to recover.

And it was good that they closed it for some time and changed the entry regulations -
it was far to overcrowded at weekends in the past and to much "left-overs" !

You cannot purchase the permits anylonger at sunbird lodge - you have to prebook and collect in sommerset (it was the first weekend, I think soon they will email them after proof of payment) the entry price is now much higher (60 Rand) and the number of persons on the hike limited - hopefully that will help to protect the area!

The hike itself is not to exhausting -
the first pool can be reached in under an hour, second pool takes you about 15 minutes more..you have to decide how far up you wanna go -
and the pools are worth the effort - swim, relax in a waterfall, jump from edges (beware the water is not "crystal" - you have to check for rocks!but the colour has a natural explanation, no worries)

it is just a really great place!
