“Wow!”
Reviewed 2 August 2014 via mobile

One of the best meals I've ever had. No joke. I had the mushroom starter and the salmon trout entree and it was divine. My two companions were thrilled with their meals as well (lamb and salmon trout). The food was incredibly fresh, well portioned, beautiful, and most importantly delicious. The staff was attentive, courteous, and the whole experience was delightful. The restaurant itself had just been refinished and it is lovely. I've been to many restaurants that have been considered to be great in my life, and this was better than many of those. Wow.

“Excellent main courses but some odd choices in the appetizers”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We had a fine dinner here, however my wife ordered pork belly ravioli as her first course and that dish was a failure. If it didn’t say pork belly ravioli on the menu, you would have thought it was a vegetable medley with some pasta at the bottom- there were too many competing flavors so the dish was muddled. In contrast, our mains were excellent. I had a nice Springbok steak. The staff was pleasant, but we had expected a better meal overall.

“Amazing”

Our stay at the Country House and Villas included several meals at Monneaux. The food was fantastic, the service impeccable, the wine list exceptional. We had lunch on the patio upon our arrival which added to the feeling of relaxation we sought. We also had our coffee and sherry near the fireplace after dinner one night, so cozy.

“Favorite restaurant in Franschhoek”
Reviewed 21 May 2014

Service is wonderful and food is even better. We ate here for dinner and wish we would have had lunch here too in the courtyard! Very convenient to downtown especially is you are staying at the Franschhoek Country House and Villas.

“Pleasant Saturday lunch, interesting vegetarian options”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

We were at the Franschoek Literary Festival and hungry for lunch. But nothing inspired us within walking distance of the lecture venues. So we drove out to Monneaux and were given a friendly welcome. The restaurant was fairly empty.

There were several vegetarian options, which was most impressive (we had originally wanted to eat at Le Quartier Francais in town, but there was not one main vegetarian option on their menu!!).

My husband loved his dish of mushrooms, artichokes, asparagus, and Gorgonzola. But it is a matter of taste because they were not flavours I enjoy. I had the deep-fried ricotta gnocchi with butternut, olives, spinach, cherry tomatoes, and feta, with a vinegar butter sauce. While I did like the deep-fried gnocchi, the dish was rather tasteless and the vinegar sauce too overpoweringly vinegary.

We also had ordered a Greek salad, but the kitchen forgot the order so, when we managed to get the waiter's attention, it felt too late in the meal and we cancelled it (they were very apologetic and wanted to make it quickly for us).

For a fine-dining restaurant the prices were very reasonable - R80 and R90 each for the vegetarian dishes.

It's a peaceful place but it was a pity that you cannot see the majestic Franschoek mountains from the restaurant; the view is of their courtyard, which is a large canopied outdoor eating area on flagstone pavers, under huge, beautiful trees, with pots of lemons on each table.
