Stony Brook Cottages
Reviewed 4 July 2014

We stayed for a night in Cottage 5 which is the family cottage at the top of the hill.
Two very comfy rooms (kingsize and twin) both with very nice ensuite bathrooms.
Small kitchen and big lounge in the middle, with a big fireplace.

There is no TV. Play charades, read, or have a conversation! :)

You can walk up the hill to the dam - just follow the trail, you can't miss it. Spectacular views! Time it for sunset if you can.

Tip: buy an extra bundle of firewood in town if you are planning a long evening... one bundle is supplied, but burns out in a couple of hours.
Tip: the road from Reception to the cottages is rough. You don't need a 4x4, but take it very slowly. I wouldn't like to do it after dark - so we bought supplies in town and cooked supper in the cottage.

Room Tip: All cottages much the same as far as view/location goes - ask for the big cottage at the top, for a...

Beautiful and tranquil location hidden away from the main town of Franschhoek. The owner of the farm is wonderful, the cottage is so comfortable and the wine,, speechless!! I am just really really proud of myself for finding such an awesome place.

We stayed just one night but keen to get back for a longer stay as the surroundings are just what you need for a relaxing getaway. It was just the 2 of us but next time we will try it with kids. Wish we had arrived in time for wine tasting and to spend more time taking it in. We ate at Ryan's Kitchen about a 5 minute drive away. So all in all a fantastic trip to Franshhoek.

We arrived "out of hours" but as promised in the email before hand the key was waiting for us in a designated safe. The cottages are simple yet comfortable, with a wood burner, nice powerful shower, plenty of hot water and kitchen equipment. We had a BBQ on the balcony which had been cleaned in the morning before we got up which was great. Pick up coal and wood in Franschoek on the way in. The cottages are not serviced for less than a 4 night stay. We were there for 3 nights only, and it would have been nice to have a daily housekeeping service, especially given the price compared to other similar properties we've stayed in where this has been standard.
The property itself is beautiful and surrounded by nature. It is a steep but short walk up to the dam behind the property and I have never seen so many types of protea growing in one place!
It was really lovely. The road to the cottages was quite bumpy but our little rental car handled it.
We would definitely go back, hopefully next time for longer. We only met the owners on the last day whilst paying, they seemed really lovely.

We've escaped for a family weekend and our time at Stony Brook was excellent. The hosts are very friendly. The cottages are well equipped and very clean. The surroundings are absolutely magnificent. Check in, check out was seamless. A big bonus is a big fluffy, Husky that was a real hit with my son.

5 cottages situated behind the wine estate, just below the mountains, along a little stream, in a very quiet area - just the place to unwind.

We stayed in number 3 - the middle cottage, and it has all you need - a simple kitchen with basics to cater for yourself (but why bother, given the good restaurants 10 minutes drive away in Franschhoek), a very nice huge bed, a small dining table, a comfortable couch, shower and little else (no TV, yay!) - the perfect place to do very little in. With its close location it is excellent to explore the area, yet allowing you to escape the tourist hordes when you've had enough. Stony Brook is still one of my favourite wine estates, so going for a tasting is a must, and the service, especially if Joy is there, always superb.

Room Tip: Number 3 was great - a small parking area right next to the cottage, and a huge double bed (one of t...

We stayed overnight at Stony Brook as I was looking for a calm and serene place to spend the night with my husband to celebrate my 40th birthday with my husband, while taking in the culinary delights (The Tasting Room!) that Franschoek offers.
From the lovely drive on the tree-lined road, passing the beautiful Arabian horses, to the rustic little stone bridge crossing to arrive at our destination, Stony Brook met expectations from the start.
Unfortunately as this was a mid-week we arrived early evening so did not get to meet the hosts. But hte key was arranged and ready exactly as the email stated.
We then went in to our room, which was simple but welcoming. We had a quick pre-diiner foray up to the newly created dam, and listened to a troop of baboons calling to one another, over the sound of birdsong and the burbling river as it ran over the rocks (the stony brook of the name)
The bed and the soft pillows were welcoming and inviting after our night of gastronomic bliss, and we left the next morning feeling relaxed and refreshed while getting a final sniff of the fresh farm air and wet pine needle scent lingering in our minds.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked lovely and all face the river.
