“The height of luxury”
Reviewed 19 December 2007

What can I say, a first-rate hotel. Well not really a hotel as you have a private 'house' round a central pool area. The gardens are fantastic.

Our suite was massive, big lounge with complimentary decanters of gin, port, whiskey and rum and a free min-bar, which wasn't so mini. Huge bedroom that led on to a private outside garden with a plunge pool.

Two places to eat 'Ici' and the 'Tasting Room'. Ici is the relaxed area where breaffast is served and you can get a good three course meal (lunch and dinner). The Tasting Room is for fine dining (rated as the 47th best restaurant in the world in 2007 by Restaurant Magazine, and the best in Africa) where you can try an eight-course tasting menu with a different glass of wine for each course. Alternatively you can go a-la-carte for four or six courses.

One of the highlights of our honeymoon in South Africa.

Hotel looked very ordinary from road but all the rooms were tucked behind hotel overlooking pool. Our room was extremely comfortable and the ambience was fabulous. The staff were wonderful and very discreet. We experienced the 8 course dinner with wines which was excellent. I had a massage and facial at the spa which was great as the therapist was very good. All in all,a great hotel in which to completely chill out and get into the holiday spirit!!

We stayed here for 4 nights and loved every minute. The town is fabulous and on the door step, food is great - particularly the 8 course tasting menu (if you like that kind of thing) and there is a sister restaurant at a nearby vineyard. Service in the hotel and the restaurant couldn't be faulted.

But best of all, we could simply have sat and admired the views from our room / beside the pool all day long.

Stayed here for 1 night during a mini tour of the Cape Winelands and we absoluetly loved it. We really wanted to stay another night and nearly did but kept to our original plans. Wish we hadn't as our next base in Stellenbosch came no where near.

From the outside it just belnds into the residential properties around it, but once you are inside you start to see the real Le Quartier with its lovely settings. One of the best located hotels in Franschhoek right in the middle of the main street.

The reception area is a seperate building complete with its log burning fire, internet desk and book and DVD libery. We checked in early and our room was ready for us. I wasn't blown away with the check in procedure they seemed shocked to see us, but life does seem a little layed back in Franschhoek.

The main Auberge rooms & suites are all set around a pool and court yard area with pretty gardens. Each room has its own little garden with a seating area. They are not modern rooms but I would disgaree that they are dated or tired. They have a lot of character and come with under floor heating in the bathroom, a log burning fire with plenty of wood to keep you going, complimentary tray containing water, fruit syrup, cheese savoury biscuits, there were no honesty bars in these rooms. Also missing were corkscrew and iron and ironing board. Both of these we requested and they were delivered promptly.

Nice touches such as the hot water bottle in your bed during turn down, hard written card waiting for you from the hotel manager, room diaries, etc. Breakfast was excellent in the hotel bistro iCi.

We ate in The Tasting Room and choose from their 4/6 course menu. I have to say the food was amazing as was the very reasonably priced 12 year bottle of wine we had. The food is a little expensive for South Africa but we would have paid double that in the UK at a restaurant of a similar standing and in the World top 50. I thought the service let them down a little but only because the food sets so high standards.

We took a quick peak at the Foure Quarters suites and they looked amazing. We will definately return to this quint and charming little place.

The only warning I would give is dont book the hotels wine tasting they wanted to charge R1600 to visit 3 vineyards I thought about it and cancelled. We went to 5 on our own and had lunch at Bread and Wine (which is a must) and opnly spent 500!!!!! They also failed to tell us about the complimentry transfers their website states is included.

  • Liked — The lovely setting and the quaint room
  • Disliked — Service in The Tasting Room was not upto the standard if the food.

Stayed for 1 night and dined in their tasting rooms. Lovely hotel and wished we stayed for at least 2 nights as Franschhoek is lovely town with phenomenal scenery. Hotel arranged a private wine tasting tour for us.

Great hotel in the heart of the Western Cape wine region. Fantastic rooms and grounds. Berakfast was good. Dinner was ridiculously overrated and overpriced. There are better restaurants to be had in the area.

We stayed at Le Quartier Francais for two nights in late June. We thought that the room and the hotel were extremely cute and charming in that french country bed and breakfast kind of way. Unfortunately, the famous Tasting Room was closed while we were there, but we ate at Ici several times for breakfast and for dinner once. The room were really cute and they put hot water bottles in your bed to keep in warm when you climbed in at night. The floors had radiant heating which was great in the winter. The food was very good, but not world class, (but of course we did not eat at the formal dining room/ Tasting room), but perhaps I expected something more with the close affiliation to the Tasting Room. It was too cold for us to take advantage of the pool. We did light fires at night which was romantic and kept the room cozy. They also had a nice selection of DVD's which was nice. Our most memorable meal was at La Petite Ferme; which was nearby-fabulous french country food with a superb wine selection. We had also booked Reubens which was across the street from LQF, but we were a bit disappointed after all the hype. The portions at Reubens were huge and the food was solid, but definitely not that special. I think LQF is a great getaway if you are going to the winelands and I would defiitely stay there again. It was also right on the main street of the town which made it easy to walk around the town, but come back to the hotel to eat or just for a break. The hotel also was great at offering to pick us up after lunch at La Petite Ferme.
