The saving grace of our visit to Auberge Alouette was that we only stayed there for one night! I'm not sure where to start... The first shock came when we saw that our bed, which was advertised as being a Queen, was only a small double bed in a cramped room that was grossly exaggerated by online photos. I WOULD NOT HAVE booked this room had I known this as my partner is well over 6ft! The toilet is open above to the room (not closed off as suggested online) and you can hear absolutely everything that happens in the house - definitely no good for a light sleeper or someone seeking a private room. We asked which the best contact number was in event of emergency (I.e being locked out, or a medical emergency etc) and then started getting a lecture on how this was not a $1000 hotel where people have lots of staff to attend to things. After an exhausting 24 hrs of travel, we were hoping for a calm relaxing night, but what followed was nothing of the sort. We asked the owner which of the restaurants he could recommend, thinking we would get a few options to choose from. Only one was mentioned, and within 20 mins of this we received a knock on our door from Elbie advising a shuttle would pick us up at 8pm to take us to this restaurant. No questions asked, it was just done without so much as mentioning a preferred time. When I told her I wanted to talk to my other half first because I was not certain of the time and whether we wanted to go at all (being so tired), I was told we were being done a huge favour as they were fully booked. While I appreciate the good intention, there was no thought given to what the guest might want, or that it might be inappropriately forward. We later found out the other guests were whisked off to the same restaurant. I had to say no to breakfast 3 times, and was then told "you make me feel so bad" (because we chose to rise early and have breakfast at 7am elsewhere)!? I was brought fruit anyway. However, it took over 30 mins for my partner to get a pot of tea. I'm sure Elbie meant very well, but she needs to take a step back, open her ears, and learn a thing or two about customer service. She hounds her guests and takes liberties that should not be taken with paying customers. She also needs to learn to be more polite when issues arise. We accidentally broke a key in the wrong door, and she was very rude about it and before even assessing the situation told us that we would have to pay for the door (there was nothing wrong with the door, and we payed for the broken key). If you are happy to spend R385 on false advertising and an overbearing host then this place is fine. Had I known it was this bad however, I would have happily paid twice the price and gone elsewhere. Wish I had read the reviews!
