Owner description: Agriculture and a simple farm lifestyle is at the heart of Boschendal. One of the oldest farms in South Africa, founded 1685, the farm has grown with the passing centuries into a cherished source of wholesome produce, great wines and happy memories. Set in the Drakenstein Valley surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, lush gardens and vines, the original farmstead complex is now a national monument with a rich and intriguing history of more than 300 years. Today, Boschendal is a Cape winelands icon and a cherished wine and food destination. Our vineyards and fruit trees have been joined by vegetable gardens and a growing herd of free range, 100% pasture fed Angus cattle reflecting our commitment to serving wholesome farm-to-table food. Guest accommodation is also a recent addition to the farm with luxurious cottage accommodation ranging from the exclusive and historic Rhodes Cottage built by Sir Herbert Baker to the elegantly restored Werf Cottages. Cottage guests enjoy access to the entire farm where they can walk and cycle on trails through mountain fynbos, dine under the stars, have picnics and sundowners in exclusive areas, fly-fish in the dams and swim in pristine mountain water.

“Great Winefarm Restaurant”
Reviewed 27 June 2012

The setting is beautiful, eating under the huge oak trees in summer with a small but really great seasonal menu and their own top grade wines. Lovely play area and carriage ride for kids

“Happy tasting at Boschendal”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

Boschendal is a very old winery and it is lovely laid out with an old manor house that you can visit. They cater to all tastes, restaurant, pick nick baskets, cafe and wine tasting. We tasted six different wines, all pretty good. We were impressed by the quality!

“average”
Reviewed 5 May 2012

Boschendal used to be one of the better estates to visit , the wines are still very good but the wine tasting experience was average at best. would prefer to just buy their wine from a shop in future.

“Don't go there! Don't even think of having a picnick there!”
Reviewed 22 April 2012

It was our worst experience in South Africa and really a shame in such a beautifull place like Franschoek/Stellenbosch.
It is difficult to say anything positive about Boschendal.
Normally in a wine tasting, the staff talks to you about the wine, explaining every wine that you are going to taste. At Boschendal you can forget it. You arrive there, choose the wines from a paper, then they put the wine in front of you and that's it.
There was not much going there, so it was not like that they had a lot of guest and to few waiters.
The wine is ok but we can get much better in that area (Uva Mira, Simonsig, Rustenberg, Warwick,....).
We had planned to meet another friends there to make a picnick. That was a big error.
First the place to have the picnick has a road next to it. So whenever people are entering or leaving the winery, they go with the car by you. Not so relaxing, and not so beautifull when you have dozens of better picnick options in that area.
Then the waiter at the picnick was rude, unpolite and he needs to get some education and learn how to work in the gastronomy business. Bringing a basket, leaving it on the table and then just asking if it is everything ok does not make a good service. For that service we gave a 7% tip. He wrote ironic things on the bill after we revealed the tip amount and told us that we should have given a higher tip! I have never had such an experience in my life. If I knew about it, I would have given 0% tip.
And still one thing. You taste the wine, but if you want to drink wine at the picnick you have to pay the double of the price.

If you go there, it is your fault. Now you are warned. Too tourist oriented. Too rip off.
Don't waste your time there. Go to better and friendly wineries, there are so many there!
