This was one of the vineyards we were determined to visit. The entry level Porcupine Ridge range is relatively cheap and easily available in the UK. And we knew that for those special occasions we also loved Chocolate Block.

Boekenhoutskloof is located in the far corner of the Franschhoek valley. As we approached, the estate looked big and I was concerned that this would be a commercial experience. But the tasting proved to be very relaxed and low key; it’s much less commercial than some of the similar sized vineyards nearer to town, and we were surprised and delighted to find that it is free.

The staff were very patient, friendly and knowledgeable. We were thrilled to be introduced to the Boekenhoutskloof Seven Chairs Syrah – which is of a very high quality – and we were so impressed by it that we drove around all the wine shops in town to track down a bottle. Definitely worth a visit.

Some of the entry level (i.e. the Wolftrap/Porcupine Ridge ranges) wines here are ok and cheap but as you move into The Chocolate Block and especially the Boekenhoutskloof Seven Chairs range the quality improves a lot. The later is not always available for tasting but if you are lucky they may have a bottle open.

The tasting experience is relaxed and less commercial than some of the other large vineyards in the area. The staff are friendly and approachable. And finally worth noting that it is also free.

Worth a visit and it's right beside two small family run vineyards which are definitely worth a visit: Haut Espoir and Stony Brook (need to phone ahead to book for either of these thought).
