“A beautiful small hotel with style and impeccable service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2011

What a wonderful setting, tucked away in beautiful Franschhoek but only a short walk to the high street and excellent dining. Spacious cottages, well-equipped and serviced. Certainly not your usual corporate hotel! So relaxing and comfortable we wished that we could have stayed longer.
Our hosts and all their staff were wonderful with an emphasis on personal service and attention to detail! Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for your care and consideration. We really enjoyed Franschhoek and would like to return to see more. There is a great selection of wine farms within the area which are easy to find.

We stayed for 4 nights at this amazing b&b/boutique hotel. We were made very welcome - the room was super (Vreude) and the service just great. We had our own little garden and splash pool and total privacy and relaxation. Breakfasts were all you could wish for . We had access to wi fi if we needed it (we used it to research the area we were going to next). Our hosts had all the necessary info about the locality around Franschoek and their recommendations were great. A perfect spot from which to explore the vineyards. There were many restaurants to choose from within walking distance for superb evening meals.

We got very good help making resvervations at restaurants and enjoyed the generostiy of offered drinks and the calm spacious room with its great and light bathroom. The breakfast is excellent. We would have appreciated being left alone a second and offered a refreshment on our arrival and not immediately having to deal with all the details regarding the facilities of the hotel. We would also have appreciated a fresh rather than heated pool.

We find most of our guests canot wait to get settled in to their suites and to relax in their own space and time with our free drinks and champagne all at hand in their fridge. If people look flustered or want to chat before we show them their rooms we would of course accommodate them with some coffee or tea but then they would need to let us know. We are sorry we could not give these guests what they expected. To make everybody 100% happy is what we like to do. When they come back next time we will be prepared.

The pool is more difficult to solve. Had these guests taken one of our private villas with their own private gardens and pools they would have then had a choice of the villa's unheated pool or the common solar heated one. As they were in one of the three suites that shares the solar heated pool they had to use it.

Obviously we would like to know what temperature suits most swimmers and acting on this suggestion we will try to do a survey at different temperatures to get to an optimum temprature. Thank you for the suggestion

Our second visit and every bit as enjoyable as the first. The service is excellent and nice touches such as the use of a local mobile phone. A very characterful building with a very relaxed atmosphere. The room rate especially with the strength of the rand make this an expensive stay they should consider a loyalty programme for return visits as we are offered in two other places we are now regular visitors to.
Totally recommend a stay and of couse lots of great eating venues locally, try Bon Vivant , the best in the valley

The weak pound and Euro are a problem for us too. We know it costs our vistors from the UK and Europe more to come to South Africa now than it did and that distresses us.

We have tried over the last two years to keep our costs as low as posssible - with inflation an effective price cut of 15%. In these difficult economic times one has two choices – cut prices further and give specials – or maintain the highest possible quality*. Unlike some of our competitors we have chosen the latter course so that our guests might enjoy, now and in the future, the Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House experience at its best. We hope it is the right way to go and that the so called hard currencies recover some of their muscle so that our visitors from those regions can, once again, get the best of both worlds.

The whole complex is quite delifghtful and the owners have considered all the needs for their guests. Phones with useful numbers and an Ipod docking station (only 1 in all (6) of the accomodations visited in South Africa) are indication to the attention to detail.
Wonderful rooms, breakfast and staff alongside complimentary drinks & snacks mean this will be the place we will recommend to anyone visiting the Winelands

This was without doubt THE nicest B&B that we stayed at during our 14 night trip to SA, staying at 7 different quality boutique B&B's so I can see why it is the No1 place to stay in Franschhoek. We stayed in the Vreugde garden cottage suite for 2 nights, but could happily have stayed longer.. We absolutely loved this place.

Everything you could want is at hand in your suite - complementary stocked bar (with snacks) that was topped up daily, quality coffee maker, comfortable beds with quality linen accomodation, nice toiletries etc. They also provide a mobile phone for your use in each suite (a very nice touch). Great WIFI.

I loved the private cottage garden that came with the suite - a nice clean plunge pool, sunbeds and a lovely sofa on the covered terrace that became one of our favourite relaxation spots!

The breakfast offers absolutely everything that you could want or need, and if you go away hungry then it's your fault! Home made muesli, poached fruits, a fresh fruit plate that had more than 10 different kinds of fruit on it, bacon, sausage, eggs etc etc All set out under a covered terrace on a lovely granite table.

It's a short 5 min stroll to the main street with lots of fine restaurants and quality craft shops. We also picked up some bread and nibbles from the Pick'n Pay supermarket on Main street and sat on our terrace enjoying these one evening after a rather large lunch at Reubens (high recommended)...

There is a friendly black labrador dog on site that is very well behaved, and if I had one small request, it would be for a gate or fence to be put up to stop the dog freely "visiting" us in our cottage garden. Having said that, my husband is a dog lover and very much enjoyed the said visits!!

If you are visiting Franschhoek, then this really is THE place to stay, so I would not hesitate in recommending it to any future traveller wanting to experience the charm of South Africa. We would return here in a heartbeat....
