“Exceptional Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2014

Not having confidence in ratings, we were surprised and delighted with our experience at Akademie. The street is quiet, but just a few blocks to local restaurants and shops. The main house feels like a beautifully appointed home with family art. The pool and gardens are manicured, and a perfect spot for eating a delicious breakfast of assorted fruits, cereal, eggs. The staff will remember your choices, and the quality and service is amazing. We stayed in the main house in Twyfeling B, which is very private, and spacious. We especially enjoyed the sun room, and the view to the gardens. We struggled with the coffee maker, but it was a tiny hitch in a delightful stay. We would love to go back.

Great experience, wonderful staff, very safe and private. Highly recommended!

The breakfasts were perfect, and the bath on the balcony is a unique experience.

Staff were professional and friendly, and the room was very clean.

We were delighted by the excellent rooms, service and food at Akademie but the experience was soured significantly but one incident. One afternoon we came back to our room to find Arthur showing three people around. Arthur told us they were agents, but it hardly matters who it was. We we not asked permission for this to happen and felt it a serious breach of our privacy, especially when Akademie emphasize the importance of privacy for their guests. We were not given the opportunity to put anything private away, and are not comfortable with complete strangers seeing our private things. It also made us wonder if he had taken these people through the rooms of the other people we stayed with.

We approached Katherine and Alfred about the issue before we left and were very disappointed to find they did not see it as a problem and were barely apologetic. For a hotel of this standard we would not only expect complete privacy and honesty, but in light of this clear and serious problem, we would expect an unequivocal apology. For this we were left with a very bad taste in our mouths, which will leave us unable to recommend the hotel.

We were terribly unhappy to hear from our guests how disappointed they were about Arthur showing agents their room. Unfortunately it was an unscheduled visit and as our staff had just finished a thorough room service, and the guests were out for the day, Arthur himself took the agents up to give them an idea of what this room looked like. They particularly wanted to see it - each room is so totally different.
I most certainly did apologise personally and shortly afterwards I also wrote a personal e-mail to the guests, apologising.
We never take an agent to a room when our guests are there but I must mention a factor which always needs to be kept in mind, and that is that in this hospitality and travel industry we (and all our staff) are dependent on our travel agents who form a considerable percentage of the business.

Thank you to Hazel, Katherine, Arthur and all the team - we had one of the best nights away at your beautiful guesthouse. From the moment we arrived, and were met by Hazel, the welcome was gracious and friendly. Our accommodation was beautiful - if only the weather had been better to enjoy the private garden and swimming pool. Very comfortable beds, beautiful bathrooms, and an amazing selection at breakfast the next morning. A truly wonderful stay - we hope to be back later this year!

What a lovely place to stay. The property is easy walking distance to town. The courtyard and pool area was a great place to relax after an exhausting day of wine-tasting.

The property, including our room, was decorated with fabulous art. Katherine, her daughter and the rest of the staff made us feel right at home and well cared for. Breakfast was abundant and delicious.

If you are looking for a quiet, charming place to stay, just off the main drag in Franschhoek, I'd heartily recommend the Akademie.

Room Tip: "Uitsig" was spacious with lovely decorative touches, a heated floor, great tub and view o...

We stayed two nights in this beautiful hotel and would certainly recommend it. Arthur Katherine and Hazel were extremely hospitable, the breakfast was delicious and nothing was too much trouble. We hope to return!
