Every Cloud has a silver lining and I have to say Le Manoir De Brendel was mine.

Everything was perfect even more than I ever anticipated.

Staff pleasant and helpful. Neat and tidy, felt so much like home away from home with all the luxuries.

The food was truly South African and great at that. Presentation was excellent.

I had a wonderful stay.

This was our penultimate stay in South Africa after a month of traveling around the Western Cape and staying at some incredible B&Bs, hotels, Safari lodges and guest houses. Everything had been perfect until we arrived at the Manoir de Brendel.

We were sold by the fancy website, boasting 5* luxury suites in peaceful surroundings, on a private vineyard with it's own spa. As soon as we arrived we realised the website bears no resemblence to the actual place and were instantly disappointed.

No greeting from reception - had to wander around to find someone - (an off duty waitress) to check in - were shown straight to our room, no help with luggage, and no information about the town, facilities or vineyard. To get to our room we were led across unkept gardens, past pieces of string and cardboard (!) and our room (#5) was next to the kitchen, who's door was open showing us all the plates and tins stacked up.

Room was very shabby - stains on the old grey carpet, freyed hessian rugs, sticky bathroom floor (old varnish peeling on the floorboards), no remote for the TV, ants on the dressing table, no towels in the bathroom. The ceiling was paper-thin and with 3 young children staying above it meant sleepless nights. The walls were also thin, so from 6:30am we were able to hear all the preparations for breakfast going on next door!

Breakfast was a letdown considering that Franschhoek is the culinary capital of South Africa. Waited a long time for tea/coffee - hot breakfast order was taken and both meals served were not what we ordered (I specifically said I was a vegetarian yet was brought out bacon and sausage!).

We had to ask reception about the wine tasting available at the hotel - upon hearing it was a half-hour sesssion (or alot less if the receptionist carried it out) we went down the road to Grande Provance and had a fantastic time there.

The grounds at the Manoir have so much potential, it's a beautiful setting, but the pool was filthy, and the Mgmt did nothing to stop guests with young children using it as a (very noisy) playground, and on our first day even the Owner's teenage boys were in there throwing food and water around!

So in summary, this place is definately not a 5* and should not be allowed to advertise it as such - and despite being the most expensive place we stayed in during our whole month on the Western Cape, it was by far the worst.

Booked "Le Manoir" following a search on SA Venues.Looked a great 5 star place to spend Xmas, how wrong could we get it! Its not 5star and I've complainded to the SA Tourist Board. Briefly we found the following, 1 A run down and unloved establishment.
2 Gardens unkempt. 3 Service slow 4 Only local TV stations.
4 Ducks in pool. 5 Appalling breakfasts 6 Dirty brown hot water.
7 Dirty bathroom. 8 No pool towels 8 The management booked us Restaurants, but the first night they hadnt and the second was the wrong time. I will stop here because you have the picture, good marketing. high price , the expectation of 5star in all respects but no delivery. South Africa was lovely and so were all the other places we stayed, such a pity.

My husband and I have just returned from a three week amazing honeymoon in Africa. however the Manoir was a big disappointment. it has been marketed very well but the price paid (expensive especially for this part of the world) does certainly not equal the package.

it is situated in the most beautiful grounds but unfortunately during our stay they were not cleaned, duck poo everywhere including in the pool which we could not use.

no lunch was served during our stay as chef was off. my husband ordered eggs benedict for breakfast one day and got an egg resting between an american sweet muffin...

the room was lovely we had number 10 and was very well serviced by the cleaning ladies as was our laundry.

we saw the manager once during the stay and when asked for her she was at the golf club.

no pool service was offered we had to go and try and find someone to get some water.

as a regular gym member i was looking forward to the gym as the food in this area and obviously the wine are so tempting, pounds where piling on, but it was a joke to say the least and was located in the filthy spa area...

we did play tennis, after they went to buy some balls and the walk around the grounds are beautiful.
i think there are many better places to stay to enjoy the beauty of Franshhoek, for example Klein Waterfall which is quaint and well priced.

quite simply not the luxury expected given the price...

What a superb place. Pricey, but worth it. We stayed here in Feb '06 as part of our honeymoon trip around the cape area. Great staff, stunning house & setting, fantastic suites, perfect pool area (and much bigger than it appeared in the photos we'd seen) and only a couple of minutes drive down a big straight road to some of the best restaurants you could ever hope to find. We were there during the big powercuts but even that was catered for with torches lighting up the rooms. The staff will prepare a picnic for you that you can take off down through the vineyard to the picnic areas they've hidden down at the back - it's a paved walkway all the way and you get to stroll past their sweet little chapel and the duck pond. This place was incredible. We loved driving through the front gates and up the driveway - very luxurious feel to it all! We HIGHLY reccommend this place.
