Le Franschoek was a fabulous three night stay for us. We were in Franschoek for a wedding and stayed at Le Franschoek with the rest of the wedding guests. The wedding was at a winery near by. We had a fabulous room away from the main building in the gardens.  It gave our kids (5 & 2) some lovely gardens to wander around in safety. In front of our room door was also a covered patio area with an outdoor table and chairs. They loved following the squirrels on the property.

The hotel includes a beautiful breakfast each morning. We departed early on the last day to catch an early flight out of Cape Town. The hotel provided us a packed breakfast for our road trip to Cape Town. The kids loved opening up the beautifully presented and packaged breakfast packs.

Our room suits a family with a king size bed, setee, desk and bathroom downstairs. Upstairs was a loft style room with 2 single beds, a chest of drawers and ample space for suitcases. It gave the kids a feel of having their our bedroom and space to play.

Our only criticism of this hotel was their babysitting rates were triple the price we paid in other parts of South Africa and Mauritius. We were charged R65 per child per hour. In other parts of South Africa we paid R40 per hour per family.   There service of checkin, concierge and wait staff was excellent.

Le Franschoek is a 5-10 minute drive out of Franschoek village. The Franschoek village had 3 supermarkets, 2 chemists, lots of restaurants, art shops and lovely boutiques.

Just a short drive from the main street of Franschhoek, tucked into the gorgeous wine country and backed by the cloud-capped mountains lies a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted and treated by a warm, enthusiastic staff. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the views are amazing.

The pool area is gorgeous and my wife's time at the spa for a massage was top-notch. Just walking around the grounds was nice. Everything is so beautifully managed and manicured.

The lounge is beautiful, but was always quiet while we were there. HOWEVER, we arrived in April on a Wednesday, just beyond the summer rush. This was nice, since we were able to make last-minute reservations at restaurants that are usually booked up.

One of the highlights was the meal at Dish, the hotel's restaurant. Chef Oliver did a tasting menu of six-courses for us that was absolutely amazing. In a region full of phenomenal restaurants, this meal held it's own with every course. The absolute freshest vegetables and perfectly executed dishes made our stay even more special. Don't miss it!

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room OR splurge for a vineyard villa!

Dear HockeyChef,

Thank you for taking the time to give such wonderful feedback on your experience at Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa! Our warm and enthusiastic staff are one of the attributes that we are very proud of and I am glad that you could experience that.
We are very glad that you enjoyed Chef Oliver's menu, he certainly is a great asset to Dish Restaurant and our hotel in general. We have decided to offer tasting menus as a standard in the very near future and trust that it will be very successful.

Happy Travels!

My wife and I recently returned fro a great holiday in South Africa, where we visited Pretoria, Jo'burg, Cape Town, Hermanus, The Crags and Franschhoek, where we stayed at Le Franschhoek Hotel.

The hotel is located a couple of miles out of the town but was easy to find!

When we arrived we were greeted by a very enthusiastic receptionist called Muller, a real live wire and actually the most motivated member of staff we met. Friendly and with a good knowledge of the area we enjoyed meeting him.

He did create an initial wow!

We had driven to Franshhoek from Plettenberg Bay via the N62, which is a picturesque drive but very long. After our drive, we wanted to relax that evening. We were provided with glasses of homemade lemonade and were shown to our room. It was large, in neutral colours and perfectly comfortable.

After that it all fell a bit flat really.

We had dinner in the Hotels fine dining restaurant and the food was good, but there was no atmosphere in the room and the service was ok.

Breakfast of Day 1 we were greeted and shown to our table, but the waitress felt cold, didnt exchange pleasantries/ask how we were or about any plans we had for the day where she could add value or encouragement. The food was good, with a good range of foods available.

We investigated the town and then lazed by the pool, which is in a pretty landscaped area, with beautiful surrounding scenary.

We dined out on the second night and breakfast on the second day followed the first. Check out was again carried out by unenthusiastic staff.

Would I go back, probably because the rooms would score a 9, the food would score an 8, Muller would score a 10, but the rest of the staff I am afraid delivered a poor 4.

Room Tip: Rooms with a higher number have a better view!!

Dear neill1602

Thank you for providing us with your feedback. It is only when we receive feedback that we are able to grow. Muller certainly is an enthusiastic member of the team. I am sorry that some of your experience did not meet your full expectations. I assure you that it is not our normal standard. At Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa we believe in a process of continious improvement in our service. Please be assured that your comments will defintely be used to work on the consistency of our service.I hope that with your next visit you will receive the 'wow', not just on check in but during your entire stay.

My wife and I booked a night here to get out of Cape Town last Dec (2011) when were were visiting friends and family whilst on holiday from London. First up, the person who took the booking was friendly and courteous, and even upgraded us to a larger room. A good start. When we arrived we found the room to be large and very comfortable, with a great thatched roof! The 2 glasses of sparkling waiting for us were also nice. The facilities were all in good shape, including the pool area, though it can get a little crowded down there when the sun is out. That night we went out for dinner and came back for a drink in the bar, which was surprisingly empty, and the next morning we had breakfast in the breakfast room, which was fine if a little clinical. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but I can understand why some other guests have found the place a little lacking in atmosphere. Personally, we didn't really care as it's a nice hotel.

Highlights:

- Great rooms with amazing views (we didn't have a balcony but would suggest asking for a room with one).
- Beautiful grounds, but then again all of Franschhoek is pretty amazing.

Tips:

- Ask for a room with a balcony.
- Drive. The hotel is about 2 miles out of town. Definitely not walking distance.
- Get to the pool early to secure a sun bed.
- There are gorgeous little outdoor tables and canopies for dining which we didn't try but looked really nice. Maybe we'll try the restaurant next time.
- Don't come here expecting a buzzing hotel, rather a nice relaxing one. Great for couples who just want to get away from it all.

Conclusion:

If you're a couple looking for a nice hotel in Franschhoek, Le Franschhoek Hotel is definitely worth considering. Would be perfect for a wedding reception.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony and mountain view. At dusk the clouds roll over and the view is spect...

Dear thatblokeDon,

Thank you for such a wonderful review. You are correct in that our hotel is ideal for couples as Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa was the country winner in 2011 for 'The Best Luxury Romantic Hotel' in The World Luxury Hotel Awards.
Since your stay in December we have added some 'soft detail' to our public areas and started on our breakfast room as well. I hope that we can welcome you back soon!

Having had our daughters wedding at another venue in Franschhoek and the family off our hands we decided to destress by staying at the Franschhoek hotel and spa - recommended by the grooms family who had stayed here pre-wedding.
Well - everything was perfect for us with a good inclusive dinner package (we had eaten out for a week) a nice quiet suite overlooking the vineyards and almost solitude as the hotel was very quiet in early March. Fantastic mountain views.
We picked this hotel as it was away from the town and we hate traffic noise (not much anyway in the area). It only took a few minutes to drive anywhere and our day trips ranged out to the other side of Stellenbosch - about a 25 minute drive.
Restaurant dining was good although the very friendly service could have been a little quicker, the food was excellent. Room service was also spot on with a quoted time of 40 minutes being met on schedule. The breakfast buffet was also well laid out offering excellent choices for either light or full on breakfast dining.
Our only concern is that we would have loved a swim in the pool but it was freezing.
We will certainly return to the area but at the top end of the market you are spoilt for choice of accommodation so your options are huge.

Room Tip: In known quiet periods it pays to either ring up or visit your final choices of hotel and negotiate...

We had a fabulous couple of nights staying here in early February. Lovely spacious comfortable room, superb views of mountains all round, and nice food. Our only gripe (and yes, it's a minor one if you have a car) was with our travel agents brochure which described this as "only a short walk from the heart of the village". We clocked the distance as being exactly 2 miles to the beginning of the village, and it was at least another 1/4 mile to "the heart" ; and it's certainly not a road you'd want to walk down at night. So please don't imagine that you'll be walking into Franschhoek from this hotel.

Dear Chris S,
Thank you for your review. I am so glad that you considered your stay a fabulous one at Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa! You are right in terms of the distance to the village. It is inconvenient to walk back from town after dinner in the dark.
We have listened to our guests feedback now offer 3 complimentary return shuttles to and from the village daily in our brand new luxury vehicles.

Happy travels and hope to see you soon!

Went for treatment at Camelot spa. Wonderful ambiance, beautiful treatment rooms, great therapist. Slightly more expesnive than other spas but I believe it to be worth the extra cost. Agree with other reviewers they need to be careful not to try and sell you a product every time.
