Lovely hotel full of grace and luxury. A transformation from the old Swiss Farm Excelsior of old. Super pool area, great lounge and spectacular mountain backdrop. Room 25 under the thatch and over-sized was spotless. Not sure why there are bad reviews as I only found this to be pleasurable and would recommend it without reservation. Only had breakfast which was befitting the surroundings! You do need a car to get to the town...only a 5 minute drive though.

We stayed in the villas at Le franschhoek during a conference.
The villa looked shabby: chipped tables, stained carpets, loose fittings, broken door handle. The housekeeping was erratic: wet towels were folded and hung back on the rack, others were removed and not replaced, soap was removed and not replaced, sheets were not changed during our 4 night stay, carpets and floors were not cleaned.
Breakfast was a farce. It was impossible to find 6 places to eat at together that had not already been used. There were no saucers or teaspoons, we had to search for waiters to take our orders for tea and toast, and the hot food was inedible. Not 5 star!

DON'T STAY HERE!!!

I travelled the garden route with my family and stayed in several places on route - this was by far the worst place we stayed in.

Service - extremely slow and poor. The hotel staff were unenthusiastic and less than helpful.

Breakfast - we were treated like conference delegates! The cooked breakfast was often cold and poorly cooked, none of the tables were cleared, it was difficult to even get a pot of tea!

Furnishings etc - many of the furnishings were stained and dirty, the fixtures and fittings were poor quality, eg towel rails would fall off when a towel was placed on them.

Security - we stayed in 'villas' with downstairs bedrooms, they had double doors onto the patio. The locks were of poor quality and the doors therefore would have been extremely easy to break into. Mine did not even shut properly. We found this was also the case with our relatives villas too.

Value for money - the hotel was expensive compared to many others along the garden route and certainly did not provide value for money...stay at one of the vineyards instead!

We enjoyed our stay. Nice decoartion. Our room was small but clean. Hotel is a bit far from town. Staff was friendly. If you like the atmosphere of a bigger hotel - stay here.

If your going to Franschoek then there is only on place to stay... Le Franschoek. Everything about the place was amzing, from the finish of the hotels rooms, the stunning views and the service from the staff. We only spent 2 nights here but we wished we could have spent 2 weeks!!

The rooms were wonderful and the backdrop of the mountains is just stunning. The room was clean and everything worked well. The restaurant in the hotel also had stunning views of the valley although we didn't eat there. I can't really comment on service too much as we didn't ask them for much during our 2-day stay although I will say they didn't know how to work the heat (it was cold when we went) and they forgot to book us for massages. They were able to make dinner reservations no problem though (again, it was low season so this shouldn't have been hard anyway).

I was very happy with my room here - it was spacious and very comfortable and everything worked in it. Also had a balcony with a superb view.
The terrace of the hotel is also really nice for enjoying drinks outside, with great views.
The drawback of the place is that the staff are very slow (eg drinks took ages, breakfast was very disorganised, with long delays for tables to be cleared etc). There are lots of staff but most of them are ineffectual.
The other thing I disliked was the loud music played outside at the Orchard restaurant, which is audible on the balconies of the rooms at that end of the hotel. So you can't just enjoy the view in peace, you have to hear loud cheesy pop music. It is a strange decision to play it - surely the lovely setting is atmosphere enough!
We did eat at the Orchard Restaurant one night and the food was good (though there are better places in downtown Franschhoek eg Le Bon Vivant), and the music wasn't too distracting (we asked for a quiet table)
The hotel could be great if a decent manager came in, but at the moment it definitely isn't there yet. Still, I would stay there again as overall I liked the setting and the rooms.
