“Loved La Petite Ferme”
Reviewed 18 July 2008

My partner took me to La Petite Ferme as a surprise for my 30th birthday. We've been to the restaurant before for lunch, and he surprised me at lunch there again that we are also staying in one of the cottages. But I'll elaborate in 2 sections

The restaurant - The restaurant is wonderfully located on the Franschhoek pass with views over the whole Franscchoek valley and mountains beyond. If you sit on the stoep you have an uninterrupted view of everything. The restaurant is only open for lunch and for breakfast for the residents in teh cottages. Lunch at the restaurant is spectacular and the food exquisite. It can get a bit busy in the summer, but seeing as we were there in the winter, we had fires roaring and a quiet restaurant. I will definitely recommend the restaurant for lunch in the winter & summer, as it's very very good. Make a reservation and go.

The accommodation - The accommodation is very luxurious. Each suite is cottage that has a massive lounge with gas fireplace, with the bedroom next to it, all open plan so that you can lie in bed and watch the fire! A massive bathroom is just off the bedroom with views. The cottage has a big private terrace in front with a splash pool overlooking the vineyards and mountains in the distance. Truly wonderfully located and big. It also has everything you want from a 5 star cottage. We had a wonderful stay at La Petite Ferme and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

  • Liked — the massive cottage with views
  • Disliked — the restaurant not being open in the evening

We arrive here after 1 week of safari, and we were very tired.
The place is perfect if you are looking for relax and romance.
it's also one of the best restaurant in town! It happen we spent a lunch there with the idea to have only 1 dish but we had a 4 course meal and 1 bottle of wine and everything was simply amazing.
The service is ok, they are frendly, they could be more frendly but after all the place and the food is so good that you don't even notice it.
I would strongly recommand it, the room was gorgeous, all white, in a French stuyle, very chic!! We had a very nice stay, part of our honeymoon trip!
if I would be back to Franschhoek (i really hope since it was one of the best thing we experienced in our honeymoon in South Africa), I would definitly come back here!

La Petite Ferme is a beautiful property perched atop a promontory that permits a stunning view of vineyards and surrounding mountains. While we hoped that our stay would be relaxing, we did not anticipate the languorous attitude of the management staff. Our cabana was without hot water the first night and most of the next day. The management asked us to patiently wait for the water to warm up before it finally had to send for an electrician. The television in the armoir did not properly work because the cable wire was visibly faulty. Although television viewing was hardly a priority, the inattention to an easily correctible matter was disappointing at such a vaunted establishment. Dinner at the hotel was good, but not the culinary experience Frommer and others advertised. For that we recommend Le Quartier Francais or Ruben's. Finally, at check-out, there was a question about our room rate. To satisfy the managment, we were asked to provide the fax confirming the rate we were given, which is not something one would expect from a first-class hotel. On a positive note, one of the management staff, whose name is Arnelle, courteously sent us off with a couple of bottles of wine for our trouble. If one should happen to book at La Petite Ferme, you would want to contact Arnelle, whose cheery demeanor and attentiveness should be the model for the rest of the staff.

This will be brief and added to later with pictures.

First the Good news. The views are great from both the room and the breakfast areas. Thats it.

The bad news...The rooms are extremely dated and worn out. The bathroom had black mold around the entire tub with several areas missing caulk. I will update later with a pictures of this 4 star bathroom. I am sure the ladies will enjoy the fact that the "curtains" in the bathroom allowed anyone outside the room to see in, as they were transparent. There were several stains on both the carpet and curtains. The TV is a joke if you wish to watch TV. Location was such that you could not see it nor could you receive any channels. Also note there is no internet service.

If you arrive after 7:00pm there is no one at reception and there is a locked gate which you must pass through to get in with your car. We spent 45 minutes waiting on someone to let us in the place upon our arrival. There were no instructions outside the gate on how to contact anyone for assistance other than the police. I phoned the main number several times with a recording that said call back tomorrow. Our travel agent was finally able to contact them. Actually if you have any problems or needs after 7pm no one is available to answer the phone. The woman who finally let us in said she had been at the front desk the whole time, so instead of apologizing for leaving us stranded she tried to blame us for not calling. Unfortunately I have a phone log showing every call and at what time, as well as the travel agent has their records as well. It was unbelievable in the attitude.

The attitude of the front desk is not bias towards accomodating the customer. You get what you get and too bad is the attitude.

After we found the room to be very poor we attempted to get out of our pre-paid agreement. They would not agree to let us leave with a refund of the part of the stay not used. Again, this is not very customer oriented service.

If you want a very overpriced view this is the place. It is NOT a 4+ star accomodation. It may have been 4 star 10 years ago but they have not invested in the property in years and it shows.

It really is hard to imagine anyone not having the most deliriously wonderful stay at this place. Granted, if you're looking for the stale dependable surroundings of an international class hotel, then La Petite Ferme isn't going to be able to help you. But if you want peaceful, comfortable relaxation and some of the most beautiful scenery this delightful country has to offer right outside your bedroom window, there's nowhere else. And for under GBP75.00 per night, an absolute bargain.

Rooms are spacious, well appointed and very homely. They provide you with more wood for a fire than you could possible use (even in the height of summer, we couldn't resist lighting one!) and the bed practically groans under the weight of a dozen beautiful pillows and cushions. The plunge pool outside won't clean itself so you do have to net away the leaves once in a while, but is deliciously cool under the hot sun. Try and book Pear Cottage if you can - it's the furthest from the main building and seemed to us the quietest and loveliest. Oh, and the lunch we had was utterly sublime and, accompanied by their own wines, one of the best meals we had in South Africa. Don't bother with Reubens: that was expensive and a real let-down in comparison.

  • Liked — Food and the views
  • Disliked — A really tiny gripe - no shower guard

We stayed for 3 nights in December, we had one of the large rooms with a lounge area and a pool. The rooms are all in seperate buildings all with the same fantastic view.

Some things in the room were a bit dated but it was still a lovely room and a really nice size for 2 people. The terrace was very private and it was so peaceful in the afternoons with a fantastic view.

Not everyone would like this place as its a working vineyard so you don't get staff fussing around you but we prefer to be left to it. The staff were very helpful when we asked for information.

Lunch was great too and they gave us a great seat presumably because we were staying there, breakfast is good too. we felt so relaxes coming away from here, would love to go back.

We went on a two week holiday, staying at four different hotels, this was easily the worst.
As we had children, we were made to stay at their Montmatre "luxury" apartments over the road from the main hotel and restaurant. This just did not live up to our great expectations of La Petite Ferme.
There were four apartments overlooking a "lake", more like a duck pond, the views over the valley were superb. There was a balcony but no decent chairs to sit and relax on. The accommodation consisted of 2 bedrooms and bathrooms and a lounge/kitchen. The decor was incredibly dated and in need of severe upgrade. The lounge did not accommodate 4 people comfortably, we didn't know what to do with ourselves.
We ate at La Petite Ferme one lunchtime which was thoroughly enjoyable, good food, service and great views. Our only gripe was the cheap and uncomfortable seating which left my husband with a bad back for the rest of the holiday.
Our reccommendation would be to eat there but not stay if you have to stay in these apartments.
