“Yet another fabulous stay with Mai . . .”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Thursday of last week was the tenth time i had spent a night at Mai's bed and breakfast in the fascinating Karoo town of Prince Albert. This stay having been something of an anniversary, I felt a well-earned and suitably-glowing review was in order! The establishment itself is beautifully decorated, with a refreshing touch of quirkiness, and also squeaky-clean. The bed I slept in was very comfortable, with the highest quality cotton linen, and the towels provided were by far the best that I had encountered on my road trip - huge, thick and fluffy! Apart from the usual delicious breakfast - it keeps one going until well into the afternoon - the biggest attraction is Mai herself, a warm, funny, slightly eccentric Irishwoman, who makes you feel like a particularly treasured personal guest! I cannot recommend Mai's more highly. Frankly, I love staying there!

If you don t do it - you ll miss something!
Just can repeat all the excellent things what you can read about Mai and her cozy B&B with a good atmosphere. I loved these pillows and you linen and felt like "little princess on a pea". I had to say: i loved the breakfast - there are these tiny butter rolls under a small english silverbox - thanks for a childhood dream came through.

And if you don t like cats - Change your mind or find something else - but then you ll never will see Wendy - great sentinel-cat, well-behaved.

Thx for the pleasant stay and next time we ll go to this new popup-Restaurant, Mai.

Best regard Alex

Thank you Mai for once again making our stay in Prince Albert such a wonderful experience!
Third time we have stayed at Mai's and third time we have been so very, very happy with our choice of guest house. Mai goes out of her way to make you feel at home and totally relaxed, which is just what we needed for those three days. Those breakfasts Mai, were once again just great and such a good start to the day!

Mai's deserves it's top ranking. It was my first visit to Prince Albert, for just a short night while driving home from Cape Town to Joburg yet I wish I had stayed longer. Mai offers great hospitality and excellent recommendations for the area, while the guest house is located right on the main street, is safe, with a lovely garden / pool and delicious breakfast. Potential guests should note there are cats - they are immaculately behaved and in my view make the place feel a home! I would love to return and experience more of Prince Albert. Thank you Mai!

Mai's is fully deserving of its top ranking on Trip Advisor.

We have stayed at many Guest Houses where everything looks lovely, but there is no soul because the owner farms out the day to day running to staff. Mai's is just a perfect example of why owners should be 'hands on' in their Guest House businesses. You cannot buy or train people to work with heart and soul, both of which Mai has in abundance.

The location of the Guest House is perfect, and the house is one of the older, original buildings on the main street of Prince Albert. The stoep at the front is the perfect place to sit and people watch, surrounded by a lovely garden. The garden at the rear is also lovely, with a well maintained pool and lots of sun loungers.

Our room was at the front of the property, and had high ceilings, traditional wooden floorboards and furniture to match. A special mention has to be made of the beautiful linen which Mai uses on the beds - what a treat. I saw the staff actually ironing the linen on the beds when they were making up new rooms - just to make it even more perfect. (Of course, it had already been ironed beforehand!) That is going above and beyond the call of duty, and again, speaks volumes about the love and care which this place oozes.

We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfasts - great choice, well cooked, and yes, the poached eggs are a delight and not the usual grey yellow bullet offerings which seem to be the norm in other places. Guests need to share one large table outside, but we enjoyed this as it gave us a chance to chat with our fellow guests and share experiences. (There is one other smaller, separate table, but that was always taken).

The cats are a feature of the house, so if you are not cat tolerant or loving, rather go and stay somewhere else. We absolutely loved them. Wendy, the largest, fattest cat of them all, sat at the stoep window acting out the role of receptionist which she did with aplomb. The cats are happy and well behaved and will definitely not get in your way. You would be hard pressed to find cat hairs anywhere - so clean is Mai's.

Mai's hospitality is legendary and she will go the extra mile to make your stay a happy one. She is a veritable mine of information and her recommendations for sights and dining and absolutely spot on. We would thoroughly recommend Mai's, and of course, we would stay there again. What a find - and a wonderful reminder of how Guest Houses should be run.

Easily found in the Main Street of Prince Albert we parked immediately outside Mai's Guest Lodge and stumbled out of the car after a long journey from the Eastern Cape, looking forward to an evening of relaxation. We were immediately greeted by Mai and spent the next half hour draped over the comfortable seating in her hallway chatting about a variety of topics. We felt as if we had known her for years.

Mai showed us to our rooms which were individually styled, air conditioned and comfortable, and we prepared for our evening out in Prince Albert. Mai was happy to talk us through the benefits of the local bars and eateries with a few anecdotes adding some interesting and amusing detail.

After a comfortable night we arrived for breakfast and were treated to a freshly prepared feast served under the vines in the rear garden.

Without doubt a great place to stay with the personal touch of a friendly and caring owner.
