“Nice town, nice B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2012

Robertson doesn't look to be much more than a main street if you are passing through, but there is a large residential area, leafy & tree lined laid out on a grid system all off to one side of the high street.

In this area is Gubas de Hoek guest house, which I believe was originally the doctor's surgery. There is a mature & very pleasant garden with an ancient palm tree & small swimming pool & when we arrived some guests had happily spent the whole day relaxing there on the sun loungers.

Balbina & Gunther are from Germany & when we stayed all the other guests were also German.

On arrival we were given a welcoming drink & Balbina offered us an evening meal, if we wished; an offer we took up & had a very large & tasty salad.

Balbina promised us the best breakfast of our holiday & was as good as her word, with freshly squeezed orange juice, the most delicious bread & a delightful lemon yoghurt concoction, with all the options of full English, cereals etc. Highly recommended.

We were pasing through & only stayed one night, but I would certainly stay here for longer if I was planning to explore the local area.

We had five days at Gubas de Hoek with family over the time our son was getting married so took over 6 rooms which were all very comfortable and spotless and surprisingly warm even though it was the middle of winter and the floors were tiled. Balbina and Gunther were very patient with us all backwards and forwards especially as they were busy with their alterations which are looking spectacular as does the garden and pool area. Gubas is very central and their are plenty of restaurants to eat out at and although we did not sample Gunther's breakfasts as we self catered I am sure they were delicious judging by other reviews. One downside for a winter's evening perhaps is that the televisions only have the basic channels which for the start of the Olympics was rather disappointing.

Thank you very much for this positive Feedback.
We're always greatful for any suggestions.
It is our intention to offer our guests always real value value for money and try to keep our rates very reasonable. It is our intention to improve our services permanently, means for expample, new pool, newly landscaped garden with lots of cosy corner, guest kitchen and many more...
The extremly high permanent costs of DSTV (R20/room/day) in combination with the poor service provided by them, was the only reason, why it was not installed yet.
We'll take your feedback as a change to upgrade some of our rooms and looking forward to the future feedback.
Thank you very much for giving us the chance to improve our services to our guests conviences. We'll hope to welcoming you again.

We arrived at the Gubas De hoek without a reservation and were given a very warm greeting by the owner, Balbina.  Her husband is named Gunther, hence they named the guesthouse Gubas.  It used to be the residence of a doctor to which a new wing was recently added.  We were shown a lovely room near the corner of this house - very private and very quiet.  There is secure parking inside the compound.
After giving us a tour of the facilties, Balbina offered us each a glass of wine and spent some time chatting with us. It was a great start at the end of a long, driving day.  The swimming pool, though small,  looked inviting and we jumped in for a refreshing dip. Guests have access to kitchen facilities and there is a fridge to store any of your food that needs to be kept cool.  We were given great directions to visit nearby places and the names of a couple of good restaurants.
This is one of the few guesthouses that offers you a choice of a small, medium or large breakfast.  Great service in the morning and after breakfast we felt reluctant to leave.  Full marks to Balbina for being a very pleasant host.

we really enjoyed our stay at gubas de hoek. we were greeted by balbina and she gave us some recommendations for dinner and a walking tour of robertson (to include a wine tasting). she also gave us some great recommendations for wine tours the next day. we had an outstanding breakfast in the morning with geraldine and marianne..........it was so refreshing to exchange cultural differences and language. the food was outstanding and the service top notch. they set us up on a olive farm tour.....they called ahead and the farm was expecting us. wrong time of year for ripe olives from the trees but the olive oil tasting and butter products were the best i've had. would love to spend more time in robertson ........... we'll be back.

We stayed here in February as a stop over from Kynsna back to Cape Town. We had a lovely time, a dip in the little pool, and Balbina and Gunther were wonderful hosts. The most incredible surprise was that one of the best meals we had in South Africa (and we had some meals!) was here!

Oh my gosh - Gunther is the most incredible chef. I would recommend staying here 100 times over!

Balbina was also wonderful helping us sort out our one year old. He was suffering from the heat a bit and she was so great with him. Only downside was that the rooms in the house, although large and lovely, are actually quite warm and due to the high ceilings and fans (no aircon) it is quite late in the evening before it cools down.

A lovely couple, and a lovely, very central guest house.

A brief but very enjoyable stay in a large, uniquely decorated room. We're sorry we weren't there on a night when the restaurant was open, but Balbina was a wonderful hostess and recommended a nice local restaurant for dinner. We loved having breakfast served on the patio right outside our room.
