“Small Hotel - Big Hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2013

The Robertson is a 5* boutique hotel in the Breede River Valley. Guests are accommodated in 10 rooms and pampered by attentive staff. We stayed in the pool suites which give out on a large pool and are lavishly appointed. From check-in to departure in your freshly washed car you are well looked after, sleeping in extremely comfortable beds in large, well-appointed rooms. just to illustrate the level of service; Our room was made up 3 times a day.....There are 2 pools on the premises of which one quite large, so you won't find them too crowded. A bar tendered by Owen, who knows seemingly intuitively what you need and a small spa compete the "facilities": Limited, but sufficient. It is difficult to describe why, but the Robertson and its staff, despite being only 4 years old, manage to relax you and make you feel supremely comfortable. Our favorite hotel in the valley.....A word of caution though, the food at Reuben's, their in-house restaurant, was not up to scratch. The management is trying to fix that problem, though.

Room Tip: Try to stay in the pool suites. Most expensive, but definitely worth the premium. Try to avoid the r...

We stayed at Robertson Small Hotel as a final night stop over on the way back from Knysna to Cape Town to break the drive and it was a lovely stopover - the perfect end to our South African holiday and we are delighted our Go2Africa consultant suggested it. If only we'd spent less time on Route 62 and arrived earlier! What has been achieved here is simply amazing. Every inch of the complex has been incredibly well designed and finished at a standard of luxury I've seen nowhere else. We had a stable room eschewing the pool rooms as it was Winter and found we looked out onto a second smaller pool and had lovely courtyards front and back. The room was incredible and the bathroom like nothing we'd experienced. Underfloor heating took it to the next level of luxury and we truly felt like kings just being able to stay there. The service was exemplary (although the lady that first welcomed us didn't offer her name) and the food at Reubens (both dinner and an amazing breakfast) an unexpected treat. We even returned to our room after dinner to find a plate of gourmet petit fours on our turned down beds! We had one small issue, the wi-fi didn't work in our room and we had to sit on the terrace to get reception, otherwise, this was easily the best accommodation of our entire South African trip (Kensington Place, Cape Town provided better service) and it deserves every accolade it has received. Plus, the guy that washed our car (what service!) on the morning of departure, was the first person doing this to actually do a thorough job including the alloys (yes, I'm a car washing perfectionist!) Robertson may not have the cache of other winelands towns, but visiting just to stay at Robertson Small is worth the drive!

Room Tip: Don't stay in the manor house as the floors are creaky and there will be noise. We had a stable...

what a beautiful boutique hotel. it has only 10 rooms which guarantees you personal service. The rooms are spacious and beautiful and I loved the special touches. It has a small but well equipped Spa and a lovely pool. We spent most of our time on the veranda and could have stayed there for a few more days.
Rueben's the restaurant as always do not disappoint. They have a wonderful wine list that really reflects the area.
Lana and her staff could not have done more to make our stay memorable.

Room Tip: Book the pool or stable rooms. Do not book the rooms in the main building. The rooms are still beaut...

Wonderful little hotel. Not much in the way of facilities, but what they do, they do very well. Some unique touches - such as rooms fronting directly onto pool, and cosy Reubens restaurant - ensure that the generic hotel syndrome is shrugged. Personal touches and small extras give a pampered feel. Rooms are luxurious, spacious and tastefully decorated. The hotel is clearly very well managed. Staff attentive and friendly. We ate at Reubens - I have seen some negative posts and I am not an expert - but I can't imagine what critisism could be offered on the food we were presented with (Pork neck). It was delectable. In summary - a great place for a short stay or as a springboard to explore the surrounding area.

Room Tip: Pool are best, Stable nice, avoid Manor house if possible (they face the back).

Wherever you are based, get thee to the Robertson Small Hotel. What could be better than packing a few of your favourite things into a stylish weekend bag and heading out into the country for a weekend of relaxation and pampering?

I had been so focused on the images I had seen of the beautiful interiors of the hotel that I forgot what a spectacularly scenic drive it is from Cape Town to Robertson, whichever route you take. I took what I guess you might call the long way round, heading out on the N2 from Cape Town, turning off the freeway onto the breath-taking coastal route through Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and up through the Bonnievale winelands through to Robertson. On the way back I followed the Paarl mountains, driving right alongside their intimidating height softened only at the base by pristine pink and yellow fynbos.

Arriving in Robertson, one approaches the quintessential South African small-town steepled chapel, at the end of Church Street. The hotel itself is situated in an old leafy suburb in an avenue lined with similarly quaint Victorian architectured houses. The pretty and classical exterior belies the trendy modern interiors, with creamy leather sofas, glass walls, skylights and soft chrome lighting.

I stay in the Stables Honeymoon Suite, a long, attic-style room with an open plan bedroom, lounge and bathroom. The care with which the suite has been designed cannot be sufficiently praised, from the clever layout to the elegant decor. Everything matches the plush cream and chocolate theme, from the silvery creamy couch, to the warm brown wood-grained beams and furniture, even down to the matching kettle, fridge and dustbin. No holds have been barred in the pursuit of finesse, luxury and perfection.

What I love about the Roberston Small Hotel:
Somehow this elegant hotel balances the textured traditional architecture with the smooth modern fittings, combining glamorous style with friendly warmth and hospitality
There is a clever configuration of rooms within the hotel grounds, with suites in different parts of the hotel and facing different directions for privacy and views of features like pools and courtyards
Deep baths in glossy bathrooms with white ceramic wall tiles, grey stone floor tiles and characterful attic-style beams
Thick wrap-around white towels
Under-floor heating, air-conditioning and a faux fur throw
A serious contender for SA’s best hotel linen award, with the softest, silkiest white bed-linen yet to be discovered
iPod docking station, large flat screen TV and DVD player
Discreet turndown service while one is at dinner, with a poem left on the bed alongside the pillow chocs
Staff move silently and cheerfully about, putting cushions out on the pool chairs before we are awake and even making the bed, tidying the room and emptying the dustbins while one is at breakfast or dinner
Complementary drinks in the room’s bar fridge
One of the highlights is Rueben’s restaurant with wonderful flavour combinations and superb breakfast

Accommodation experience
Before visiting the Robertson Small Hotel, I kept visiting the hotel’s website, scrutinising every page for potential flaws, with the main aim of lowering my very high expectations to avoid disappointment. I needn’t have been mistrustful as everything was exceptional, dare I even say, perfect. I finally believe the hype that the hotel has been causing.

As I sit in the restaurant I overhear some foreign guests “oohing” and “aahing” over their meal. “Zis is ten out of ten” says one enthusiastic German man to my left. An American woman seated behind me cannot believe how far her dollars can take her in terms of the quality of accommodation. I feel a great surge of pride at what South Africa has to offer such visitors – truly world class scenery, natural areas, wildlife, food, wine and accommodation. The Robertson Small Hotel feels like it represents a coming of age for South African hospitality. While expressing an almost Scandanavian modern-meets-traditional feel, with service and amenities set to the highest international standards, still there is nothing colonial about the hotel. It has a distinctly South African flavour and shows off some of our finest local talent. The Robertson Small Hotel showcases the best of what South Africa has to offer and is pioneering the way in cutting edge affordable luxury.

My wife was working in Roberson and we decided to arrive the evening before and stayed in one of the local hotels. Based on TripAdvisor reviews, we decided to try the Roberson Small Hotel. This was by far one of the most memorable stays in a long time. The ambiance, food, rooms and service was out of this world. In short, we will be back to enjoy.

Room Tip: Arrive as early as possible and stay as long as you can!

My husband took my away for the weekend with our 2 year old son to this hotel and we had the most wonderful time. All the staff were incredibly friendly and very patient with our (quite 'busy') 2 year old son.
It's not really a place for children but we didn't have much choice and actually it worked out fine.
It's a very romantic hotel and the food is excellent - we would definitely return.

Room Tip: We had one of the large suites that give straight onto the big pool but there are 2 smaller rooms th...
