Given Fraai Uitzicht’s reputation, it’s not surprising that tables for dinner are regarded like gold dust. Our first attempt at booking was a failure, as the restaurant is only open for non-residents on four days of the week, so this time we made a reservation well in advance. This wasn’t that straightforward, as it took two weeks to receive a reply to an enquiry made via their website. They then requested precise details of the time of arrival and any dietary requirements. The latter was helpful, as one of us is basically vegetarian although eats some fish. We were staying in a cottage on the neighbouring Klanskop vineyard that’s just 800m away, so we walked to and from Fraai Uitzicht. Arriving at 7:30 pm, we noted about eight tables on the covered stoep. Service took some time to get going and was generally rather slow throughout the evening. Unfortunately, the day had turned very overcast and there was a marked chill in the air, which made sitting outside a little uncomfortable. Blankets were offered, but the option of moving inside would have been welcome. Staff eventually put LED Kilner jars on the tables, but it was difficult to see what one was eating. The menu consisted of four starter options and four mains, with a single vegetarian option in each. No fish dishes were offered, which was disappointing. The wine list was extensive and generally reasonably priced, and listed a number of Fraai Uitzicht’s own wines, including a 2001 Merlot. The food is best described as country-style. A sweet potato soup with cumin and chilli oils was appropriately warming. A curried duck starter was pleasant. Cheesy polenta with roasted vegetables and a tomato sauce was tasty. The venison my partner had was a little overcooked. In short, there was nothing that blew our socks off and the cooking seemed to be aiming to comfort rather than innovate. By the time we’d finished our two courses two hours later, it was pitch black and we were glad to be lent an LED lantern to guide our way home. When we commented about the lack of lighting around the property, the owner mentioned that an older guest had missed his step and fallen into the fountain. He seemed to find this highly amusing. We thought investment in some lighting around the premises wouldn’t go amiss. Overall, we thought the restaurant had become rather complacent and was resting on its laurels. Once upon a time, it probably did deserve five stars, but judging by our experience, we’d have to award it just three.

According to the map of the Robertson Wineroute, Fraai Uitzicht was supposed to be open on 24 December 2016 however when we got there the owner doesn’t want to help us and in in my view the owner was unfriendly.

Karl and his wife continue to offer outstanding food and service. This evening was again THE dining experience of our holiday on South Africa's Garden Route. Fortunately we had booked from the UK before starting our holiday or it's unlikely we would have got a table and we would have been so disappointed to have missed out on this dining experience. We enjoyed a table on the deck, watched the sun setting behind the mountain and the guinea fowl returning to their roost while enjoying a glass of the winery's excellent Syrah. The food was exceptional and the service charming, professional and friendly without being intrusive. One of the absolute highlights of our SA holiday!
