Buitenstekloof really is set in spectacular surroundings unfortunately the photos on their website of their rooms and the rest of the house are outdated and it really is dirty and run down which was a massive disappointment for our family weekend away (Grandparents, siblings and babies!).

Besides the fact that there are several places that are seriously dangerous for crawling babies/toddlers (like an empty pool and 2 metre drop) - the FRIDGE WASNT WORKING when we arrived for a long weekend (Fri-Mon) and it was broken the whole weekend. The farm manager tried to fix it but it was beyond his capabilities and the owners were away so nothing was done to help us keep our food fresh. And the poor guy, Gerald, felt terrible that he couldn't help us and was a kind, lovely guy whose weekend was also ruined.

We had to drive into town to buy some cooler bags and had to shuffle things in and out of the freezer to try and keep food fresh. Especially with two young children both under 18 months - having no fridge was a nightmare. We lost and wasted a lot of food and it really detracted from our enjoyment of the weekend.

Furthermore, we knew it was solar powered but we had no idea that this meant that there wasn't one plug in the whole house! Like many of us these days our cellphones are not only our phones but also our timekeepers, cameras and a host of other things. Luckily there were no emergencies because none of us had a charged phone after the first day. And that aside the lights didn't even work properly and it was explained to us that you had to "remove the red wire if it wasn't working and try again but be sure to replace it again the next morning otherwise they wont charge".

We travel a lot for weekends away in the greater Robertson area and have stayed at many wonderful solar powered places and not once have we encountered any trouble or a place that had NOT ONE PLUG!

The main outdoor area was useless to us because it had a huge drop on the one side (hidden in the pictures online by a bush) of about 2 metres with concrete at the bottom. So with a crawler and a just walking toddler it was just too dangerous and definitely not relaxing to sit on the verander. Instead we were confined to the sub-standard lounge with old uncomfortable furniture and a small side verander with no view. Very sad and frustrating that we didn't have a spot to sit and enjoy a glass of wine with the magnificent vistas that were surrounding us.

It's also very dirty and hasn't been properly cleaned in years. The shower curtain has black mould all over it, the floors and surfaces are grimy and filthy and just a coat of paint on the inside would make a vast difference as even the walls were dirty.

Also my parents had to stay in a very damp and smelly cottage separate to the main house with a hazardous route to get to in the dark (no stairs!) - NOT ONE LANTERN OR CANDLE IS PROVIDED - we had to go into town to spend R600 on candles and torches and lanterns to try and make ourselves more comfortable. You'd think a place with solar and gas could provide more than 2 boxes of matches - a pack of candles only cost R7,95 at the local Spar after all!

And the weekend wasn't cheap either - definitely overpriced for the facilities on offer and there are much better options in the area. Try Tierhoek Cottages or Orange Grove Farm - both are cheaper and beautifully clean, neat and what you'd expect for a happy weekend away with family.

There's a whole list of other things like no door handles on half the doors, Kudu heads on the wall and animal skins with tails and all on the couches (just not my cup of tea!) but I will stop there...

Suffice to say if you're looking for a simple clean and relaxing place where the owners take care in their accommodation then this is not the place - there really are much better places to stay.

If it was 10 years ago and I arrived with a bunch of 20-something year old friends we could have overlooked the filthiness and gotten on with it but this place is not for families.

Weekends like this with the whole family for a getaway are precious and its sad that ours was ruined by neglectful owners.

Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for the fridge that worked without problem only the weekend before, and has been fully serviced only 6 weeks before that – we have already removed it for repairs and as these things sometime happen without any warning, we apologize for the inconvenience and loss of food. We will look into making certain areas more baby/toddler friendly, but had numerous families staying over which enjoyed their stay without any complaints, and commented positively on the standard and comfort of our establishment. Many of our guests remarked that it is well equipped, clean and that the beds were the most comfortable they have slept in.
As we have solar and gas appliances as communicated in our communication with prospective guests, our guests appreciate getting away from it all, even mobile phones, etc and relaxing and unwinding in nature in a beautiful setting and if needed, cameras, phones and other equipment can be charged at our main facility on the farm where electricity is available.

We went to Buitenstekloof for a weekend break from Cape Town - 3 families with 6 children and a baby between us and stayed at the beautiful Pomegranate homestead. It is a beautiful, quiet farm and one of the resident big leopard tortoises were out on the lawn to welcome us.

The house itself is well equipped and it was easy to cope without electricity - gas and solar worked well. The bedrooms nicely decorated - very comfortable beds and lovely linen. The bathroom has a fantastic view out onto the mountains. We did not have any issues with mosquitoes, which was a surprise.

Unfortunate negatives:
- no rails on the top bunk beds, so very unsafe for our children who were all under 9 years old ( had to put the mattresses on the floor)
- although the bedding was crisp and clean, the whole house could do with a good clean and dusting
- the dam was so full of lilies that we could not swim in it ( was fun to paddle on though)

All in all we had a great weekend, but I do think it is a little bit expensive for a very rustic getaway (R3,300 per night). Although it is not bad in Australian $ (I am a South African living in Cairns), I think it is quite over priced and so did all my Cape Town friends. We have had much better value at quite a few other Robertson self catering venues.

Beautiful! A place to just get away from everything. The silence of your surrounds coupled with just a few sounds of nature are very therapeutic. We stayed in baboons gift cottage, the fridge wasn't working, hopefully this will be fixed. Some recommendations: bring your own candles, shower gel/soap and also mosquito repellant is a must. Will visit again hopefully soon!

If you are looking for fantastic accommodation right in the middle of Nature at it's most spendid, this is the place to go!! Our family was amazed to find such a wonderful haven so close to Cape Town, and it was really a privilege to spend a weekend there. Would most certainly recommend it to all our friends.

We spent just under a week here and were blown away by the natural beauty of this place. Johan and Marie have out done themselves in providing an escape that is peaceful, relaxing & incorporates the beautiful countryside. My husband and I stayed in one of the cottages and were after a place where we could spend a peaceful time together, but close enough to local wineries and towns. This was the perfect combination of time to ourselves and a wonderful base to explore what the region has to offer. We would definitely go back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to locals in the area or friends overseas. Thanks to Johan and Marie for their amazing hospitality!
