“Wonderful stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

We stayed at Fraai Uitzicht for one night in March but would loved to have stayed longer. The cottages are beautiful and so much attention to detail has been given. The gardens are immaculate and the setting is just wonderful in between the vineyards. Dinner was an absolute treat with the owner Sandra as chef and her husband Karl able to give you tips on wines. Definitely a place to go back to!

A wonderful location set among vinyards. The food is really excellent and very well presented. The 'house wine' is made in their own historic cellars and it is well worth having a bottle or two with your meal! The grounds are perfect for a relaxing day by the pool or a walk before dinner. The only downside is the lack of food service at lunch time on certain days of the week.

We just spent a relaxing weekend at Fraii Uitzicht 1798 for Hands On Harvest. From our initial email correspondence, I knew that we were making an excellent choice. The estate is small and cozy, with a historic ambience. The grounds are lush, with peaceful water fixtures and 3 spirited labradors that are clearly enjoying their time at the winery. We ate several meals at the estate - the food quality and service was excellent - Frai Uitzicht is known for their Merlot, but they do an excellent job of pairing their dishes with local wines. We stayed in the cottage, which is part of a beautifully restored 18th century building - complete with a thatched roof and optional outdoor shower overlooking the vineyard.

I strongly recommend that you pay Karl Uwe & the gang a visit. We took the scenic route (43/45?) through the mountains and Franschoek on the way back to Cape Town - which was a pleasure (I suggest a stop at Moresons or La Motte for lunch).

We helped pick, mash and bottle the 2012 Voignier - we learned a lot in a relaxed setting & hope to pick up a bottle when they become available.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cottage - which has an extra bed in the loft, which would be great for a family - I...

How much you enjoy a stay at Fraai Uitziccht will depend on how you wish to spend your time in the area. The property is approached via an unmade road, 4km from the main route between Swellendam and Worcester, past various farmsteads and a few homes, where children wave as you pass by. Any attempt to speed along here produces plumes of dust (not recommended!). On arrival, check in was at the bar - accompanied by a glass of the signature Merlot which is produced here, and then owner Karl showed us to our garden room, one of a number of attached cottages in the grounds. The rooms are simple but contemporary, with comfortable bed, fridge, and very efficient air conditioning. The bathroom opens directly into the room with no door or curtain, so best if you are with partner or extremely good friend. "Rain Forest" type shower is directly onto the floor of this area. Maid service was provided twice daily. Our room had no safe, television or radio, and there is no wi-fi or guest access to a computer at the property - fine if you really want to drop out for a few days, and that is what I would suggest here - chilling out by the pool, and enjoying the fantastic scenery, with perhaps a few visits to other wineries.,The nearest town, Robertson, is about 25 minutes drive and has a full range of facilities (including internet cafe at the Vodafone store). It is unspectacular, but pleasant enough to spend a few hours.. Karl happily showed us his wine cellar, and talked us through the process for their small production there. Breakfast is prescribed, rather than buffet style, and cooked options are extra. It is nice, but unexceptional.Champagne is offered for those who want it. Most guests also take evening meals on the premises rather than face a long drive to the nearest alternatives. The menu is the same each day, but food is very good, and there are always daily specials.Meals are usually served on the terrace where you can see the sun set behind the mountains, and enjoy an excellent choice of local wines..

A group of four of us arrived looking for a possible late lunch venue and a tasting from a vineyard we hadn't experienced before. We found a beautiful setting, interesting lush gardens, a warm friendly welcome by a hostess who conducted a tasting in a pleasant informative way aound an outside table. It was all very relaxed and informal. One of our party was standing in such a way that the tip of his shoe rested on the edge of the arm of a wooden outside chair, when, who one can only presume was the owner, walked into our group with a cloth excused himself and made a spectacle of wiping it thoroughly and leaving.
Needless to say that conduct which made us feel most unwelcome resulted in lunch enquiries being made elsewhere.
